  • CONQUERING HUGE BINGE EATING PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi,

Im new to this website, as well as Atkins. My name is Jenny and Im 25. Ive been posting some questions here and there for the past few days. My husband and I decided to give atkins a shot. He just eats the wrong foods, I on the other hand, suffer from binge eating and am trying to change my ways! Im VERY unhappy with the way I look. At one time, I was down to 113 lbs (5'7), way toooooooo small and I know that. Right now Im at my highest----219 pounds. I TRULY hate it and want to change the way I look and feel. So far, I've been able to control myself (started 10 days ago) but at times, I feel I could just blow it. Oh yea, by the way, Im the type of person who eats 1 little bad thing, then have to finish eating bad, and eat everything fattening and sugary in sight. My weight has been flucuating this past week and now my fear is I havent lost as much as I thought. My "bad" ways have been eating 2 big scoops of low carb ice cream, but that is IMMEDIATELY stopping. Im gonna make sure I only eat protein and healthy fats when I need a snack. Is anyone else in a similar predicament? If so, how are you handling yourself?

    Thanks for hearing me out!

Hi, Princess! I too am 5'7" and my starting weight was 219 as well. Atkins has certainly changed my life! I've always been a binge eater. If I was "bad", I was VERY BAD! I ate pounds and pounds of chocolate, even though it would make me almost sick and not taste so good anymore. I never felt satisfied. Atkins has been amazing. You hang in there and the cravings WILL subside. Arm yourself with as much information as possible and stay close to the boards for encouragement. You're going to do great! My DH started three months after I did and he too has done fabulously! He's lost 75 pounds and enjoys eating this way as much as I do. Like your husband, he just always ate the wrong things. Doing this together makes it so much easier too. Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement! For the 1st 4-5 days, I felt pretty satisfied with what I was eating. But lately, my stomach WILLNOT stop growling. I dont drink anything Im not supposed to, but I think Ive over done it w/sweets-low carb ice cream, ice cream bars, etc (of course just one or MAYBE 2 per night). I will definitely slow down, especially after Ive been reading all of the HUGE success on this board! I really want to succeed as well! Thats wonderful regarding you and your husbands weight loss. I hope we will mirror you guys :yes

the sweeteners in those bars and icecream are what is causeing your grumbling. try subbing some creamcheese flavores with your favorite extracts or Splenda sweetened syrups some mouth texture but less harnful to your Atkins.

If at all possible, stay away from the Atkins shakes and bars.

Part of what Atkins can do for us is dissipate cravings. I'm not trying to one up anyone, trust me on that, but at 496 pounds, I was a binge eater, an emotional eater ... call it whatever we want to ... I was out of control. The concept of the inductin period is to detox our bodies from the sweets and carbs. I'll go a step further to say that the detox period also helps reduce the cravings. For many of us, the taste of a fake treat whether made with splenda or some other "sweetner" triggers that emotional part of our eating pattern that says ... "one more isn't going to hurt". We are just as capable of eating multiple "legal" sweets as we were the other foods we ate when we met a trigger and weren't able to confront it.

My advice and I'm saying this clearly so it is reinforced with me ... stay away from the fake sweets. It's not worth the fight when we have to pick and choose our battles.

            Just my opinion.

Oh boy, can I relate to this. What I have found also, is sometimes I even overeat on Atkins Friendly foods. There is a dessert called Clouds that I can't have in my house because I will eat the whole recipe in one sitting. So, what I find helpful is clean out the kitchen, get rid of anything that isn't on the induction list. Toss it out or give it to a food bank. Then stay on strict ADBB induction for two weeks, eating nothing except whats on the the list. Then, and carefully go up the ladder, just like the Doctor saids, and the second you find something that keeps calling your name from the kitchen, take if off the list. You will be amazed at how much you lose and how well you do.
And keep posting cause that really helps.

I em[tied my whole house when I started like lynne and ddin't allow anything back in. heck I was a yr into it and got a free package of creampuffs the store was giving away in my grocery bags when I got home. I had to smash each one to kep from eating them..

i know a very suceessful Atkineer who fished a cake out of the trash :yikes :yikes at work to get some more cause he had allowed himself to eat a little bit to start with.

you are an all or none person too and have many many folk here in the same condition as you abstain cause you can't control.

I really hate when some body posts I allowed mysef a bit of dessert when I when out and i'm in ketosis and doing fine cause it only reminds me i can't do that. yep i'm jealous of them and I admit it.

You mean just smashing them would stop you from eating them???? :sarcasm Not me ... I'd have to pour some nasty cleaning agent over them not ot eat them.

you must have missed my topic about them. i was accused of being a violent person :yikes in the manner in which I smashed them. I took delight in crushing on them with my fist and squirting the cream out into the sink. then I ground them up in the garbage disposer. Don't think I'd take about the plumbing to get at them so I was safe.

I was just thinking that you're pretty lucky you stop at everything in sight- on a good binge, I'll go a wanderin'... to the donut shop... to the grocery... to Wendy's... and once I allow the binge to roll... oy. Once I decide to do it, I do it up right. (which is to say, so very very wrong).

Jenny, don't deprive yourself of foods that you like, get some Atkins friendly foods in the house. Cheese Crackers got me thru induction. Cut cheese into quarter size pieces and nuke them until brown and crisp. Oh yum, Also salami chips are good. Pork rinds dipped in sour cream.
There are really good things to eat on this diet.

When I started this diet I cleaned the kitchen of all illeagle foods. That helped me alot. I gave all of it away,so it wouldn't go to waste. Sure that sounds expensive. But it was well worth it!!! Now when I shop I only buy ATKINS LEGAL food. Just think before long you will be used to the WOE. You will not have the desire to ruin the weightloss you worked so hard to achieve!!!!!! :wave GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!! :wave

I have only just started too, I am 7 days into induction. I started at 200. That's the weight I had when I had another person inside me ten years ago and I have been calling it "baby fat" for a long time. My experience with binge eating was, if it was around, and I was bored I would eat it. I ate through everything I bought for "the week", for "the kids"- it didn't matter. Just three days into induction, I did feel like I had turned the page on cravings. I do allow myself the carbs suggested, and I do eat whenever I am hungry, and I do make sure to not try to eat low fat. Those are the only suggestions I have for you, but I offer a lot of sympathy because I am walking it with you. I went to a shower, and literally felt like crying b/c they had all my favorites and I couldn't eat any of them. But I had some deli meat with cheese rolled up inside instead. I ate one gumdrop and one hot tamale candy when I sat down and just felt so guilty. You have to be gentle with yourself, as long as you are still losing- celebrate that. I have eaten a couple other things that weren't on the list- but I'm doing this for life and it will all work out as long as I am still on the right track 98.5 percent of the time.
                              Induction ends 2/19/07
