  • Re: BEGINNERS: Couch to 5K Challenge

    Thanks all for your concern
Tonight I did my usual weights then decided to try doing rung 1 timings (60 sec run/90 sec walk) only on a slightly lower incline (#3) and slightly lower running speed (#6 which = 6 kph/3.72 mph) than I have been attempting this week.
Success!! though it was fairly hard it was not impossible!! So I have completed rung 1 x 3 and will think about going up to the next rung next session (Monday).

Well, I let life get in the way of my workout yesterday. My kids start back to school Monday and my own classes start back Monday as well (usually I get about 2 weeks to myself between the kids' school and mine...but they start late this year). So I was running around (not literally, darn it!) doing errands. Car maintenance, school supplies, "Meet the Teacher" (x 3 kids x 3 separated campuses). Yesterday was also my daughter's 12th birthday and we had 10 girls spend the night.

I haven't given up for the day...I hope to try my R1D3 tonight so I can move on to Rung 2 tomorrow.

Same here, Jamie. I did not do my run yesterday - we just got too involved in the frustrations of redoing our kitchen, and I didn't feel like leaving my husband alone as he wrestled with cabinetry.

I am not going to try to make it up today, but I will do my usual Sunday run tomorrow.

I did Rung 3 Day 1 this morning. I slowed down during the jog and it went a lot better. I don't know why I want to go so fast. I catch myself and then slow down a bit. I will continue Rung 3 this week.

Great Job Everyone! We're all doing better than we thought we would!!!

I have not run since last Sunday, I think, due to kitchen renovations and all sorts of other excuses. I realized yesterday that if I didn't get a run in withihn 24 hours, I would probably quit altogether. I'm that kinda gal.

So today I planned to run first thing in the morning. Unfortunately, at 5:30 a.m. we were having an enormous thunder and lightning storm that flooded our condo complex parking area and made it impossible to get out of the door, so that was out of the question.

I just ran. It's about 3:15 in the afternoon - a hot, sunny, humid afternoon.
I never want to run at this time again! lol

So........interestingly, my lungs were great - no loss of capacity despite a week's respite. My legs, on the other hand, were TIRED TIRED TIRED. I did a half mile, then walked a quarter, then ran a quarter, then walked a quarter, then.........started to run the last quarter, but only made it about 1/8, then stopped and walked the rest of the way.

So I have now lived out my greatest running fear - that I won't be able to run the same distance two times in a row.

ANd you know what? NO BIGGIE! HAH! Pshaw, this is nothing!

            What a relief!

Evermind! I'm so proud of you for doing it today. I haven't run since Wednesday. I don't intend to quit, but in the last two days everytime I get ready to put on my shoes and get on the treadmill something comes up. Aaarg~!

Right now I'm trying to figure out if I have enough time to run/shower/dress/breakfast between the time I get the kids to the bus at 6:40 AM and the time I have to leave at 7:40. All it takes is discipline, right?

Hang in there, folks...this is a busy time of year, but we can do this!!!

Just reporting in that I got Workout 3 done for Rung 2 and I'm exhausted.

Did I mention I hated running outside? I much prefer the treadmill so was happy to get at it.

Will see if I can manage the run tomorrow which is Workout 1, Rung 3...does this get any more fun or is it just still me that kinda dreads this?

                Just curious.

Evermind good for you for making yourself get out there and get back on track!!!!!!!! Yeah yeah yeah!!!!

I can so relate to knowing I need to make it a habit because to many days off and I wouldn't get going again ........ I am such a habit forming kind of person. I don't have a treadmill option so my only option is running outside ....... I am competeing with the weather always and soon winter will set in and I will have to figure something else out!

Today I did day one of week 2 ( 90sec run 2min walk) and I did it ....... man I was wiped out when I was done but it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be! I was thrilled!

We'll see what Wednesday holds but I am hoping I can continue at this level!

Well today being a bank holiday the gym closed early at 8 pm so instead of my usual 2.5 hours I only had an hour and a half, but did my usuall hour of weights followed by another rung 1 workout at #4/#6 on incline 3 again. Seemed a bit easier, but I decided to stick on rung 1 for the rest of the week instead of moving on to rung 2.

Like Sweet Strudel I am running and hoping it will start to get enjoyable before too long.

Well done Sweet Strudel, Heidi, Liz, Evermind and Purplereain for getting your runs done, and Jamie , I know you will find a way to get it done too!!

Well, I cannot say that I love the running. I look forward to it, and I'm glad to get it over with, but I get no pleasure from it.

When I was a runner 25 years ago, it took me about 8 weeks to really get to the point where I felt I was floating off the ground and running easily, and had a really great sensation running. Once that came, I was hooked, and that's what I am holding onto right now. That and the fact that I feel a lot stronger in my legs and butt now that I've started.

OK...I managed that last workout on Rung 1. My husband decided to drive the kids to school on their first day, so I got up at 5:45 and did my run from 6:00 AM to 6:30 AM OUTSIDE! (No treadmill!) It was still quite dark, but the temp was pleasant. It wasn't easy...I had to walk through one of my run intervals. I don't know if the difficulty came from running outside or running right after waking up or running on an empty stomach. Just not sure. But...I DID IT!!!

So, I think I'm going to hang on Rung 1 for at least one more week. As for fitness, I could probably move on to Rung 2, but I have some fear of failure. With the drastic change in schedule, I think it will be easier for me to find time for a workout I'm already familiar with, rather than try to deal with both the time factor and the fear factor simultaneously. Does that make sense?

So...for this morning...a kiss delayed is NOT a kiss denied!

                              Good job, Jamie!

I think sticking with the same rung for another week while you adjust to schedule changes is a great idea. That's what I'm doing, too - I'm a teacher, and this week is teacher prep, and next week is the first week of school, so I'm sticking with what I know I can do as I change the time of day I run and deal with the transition back to work.

And kudos to your dh, who took on the chauffering this morning so you could run! What a guy.
