Re: Lord of the Rings Challenge - Calling all fans

Nope, didn't get to sleep in Old Man Willow. I believe he's still waiting for me a little farther down the road. I FINALLY finished day two. Can you believe it? At this pace, I wouldn't be in Rivendell for ten years. I hope no one is real anxious that the Ring get there with any speed at all. I've finished 48 miles. 410 to go. I've decided that I'm a fair weather Hobbit and only seem to get out and walk when it's nice out. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened to often lately. Everyone, keep on walking!!!!

Don't feel bad. I was doing so well and now have come to a stand still. I've done 54 miles, but should be a lot farther. There just doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day for me to fit it all in. I've been WEEDING (yuck) for what seems like a month on a huge flower bed in my yard. I should be done with it in a couple more days. Maybe Sam could come and be my gardener. Now there's an idea. I'm going to try and get a couple of miles in tomorrow. It would be nice to finally get to Bree if nothing else. Keep walking!!

Keep a close eye out for those Black Riders!!! They just keep showing up. I'm at Farmer Maggot's gate and I'm a little afraid of his dogs, Grip, Fang and Wolf. Hopefully I will still have two good legs to travel on when I'm done there. Are we the only two left walking, IrishMom? Keep up the good work.

I think so. I know the person who started this challenge is no longer active on the board...so..um... It's just us. You wanna be Sam or Frodo? haha!

Re: Lord of the Rings Challenge - Calling all fans

I'm not sure I'd be a good Sam or Frodo. If I were Sam I would have said to heck with it long before we got anywhere close to Mordor. I mean, friendship only goes just so far!!! I'd probably be more like Frodo, go all that way and then change my mind about destroying the ring. Of course, that was the ring talking. It would be nice to believe that I would have been noble and brave enough but I would have never taken on the quest. Especially when you KNEW ahead of time that you would probably be walking the whole way. Who do you think you would be more like? I'd like to walk a mile tonight, but it's 8:30 p.m. and it's still 80 degrees out and the humidity must be about 90%. I'll have to make up my mind soon as it will be getting dark before long and I don't want to be caught out on the road by any orcs, goblins or Black Riders. Namarie!

                    That's a good question.

I think I'd make a better Sam. I would probably not take on the role if it was offered me like Frodo did. However, if one of my friends (grant they would have to be my closest friend, haha) I would stand by them and try to be strong. It would be interesting to see how I would be in that kind of situation...

I'm almost at 40 miles! Woo hoo!

Re: Lord of the Rings Challenge - Calling all fans

I made the 65 mile mark today and am riding in Farmer Maggot's wagon on the way to the Buckleberry Ferry. I hope the ferry waits for me because I know those Balck Riders are close behind and running is NOT one of my gifts. It wouldn't take much to run me down. I don't know if Frodo would have taken on the challenge of the Ring if he'd have known what was in store for him. I can't imagine anyone would take on that kind of adversity. Of course if he hadn't it wouldn't have been much of a story now, would it? I probably would have been more like Pippin. I'd have figured it was all too big for me and I could always go home. Hopefully I would "find my courage" along the way. Keep up the good work and keep walking!!!

Well, I finished mile 73 and am resting comfortable at Crickhollow. Yeah!!!! So that means that I've finished Day Three. WHAT?? WHAT?? I've only done the first three days and it's taken me almost three months!!! What is up with that? I feel like I should be close to Rivendell and I'm hardly out of the Shire. (I will not get discouraged, I will not get discouraged, . . .) Am I really like Pippin and this is to big for me?

                            Well, is this ever cool!

                            Walk the miles they walked.

Ride bike the miles they rode horse.

Kayak or canoe the miles they canoed down the river. (Trust me, if you go down a fairly shallow river, you'll get your exercise and then some!)

Hey Terry, welcome to the walk from h***, I mean the inspiring walk from LOTR's. After spending three months and only checking off three days, I was really depressed and discouraged. I started to think that maybe I had bitten off more than I could chew. I told my husband I was tired of walking up and down the road by our place and would rather walk in a circle. Wonderful man that he is, he got out his GPS and plotted out a four and a half mile walk that would keep me and my trusty dog away from other farm dogs and keep us walking in a circle. (Now if it could have just kept the dog away from skunks! Phew!) I cut across country following the railroad tracks for about a mile of the way and the rest is country roads and ditches. It takes me a little over an hour and an half, so I've been getting up early on the week-ends before it gets too hot and walk the path set out for me. I am now at the 113 1/2 mile mark. I'm in the Barrow-downs. I have a mile and a half to go to finish day 6. It has been so hot and humid here that if I can't walk before nine in the morning, it's almost impossible to get outside. No excuses!!!! I am going to reach Bree by this time next week!! I've talked the talk and now it's time to walk the walk. Keep in touch!!

I finished day six and have been captured by the Barrow-wights. Now what was that rhyme we were taught....

                                Ho! Tom Bombadil, Tom Bombadillo!
By water, wood, and hill, by the reed and willow,
By fire, sun and moon, harken now and hear us!
Come, Tom Bombadil, for our need is near us!

I hope Tom hears me and comes to help. I'm getting awfully cold.....
