  • May Hula hoop and jump rope challenge (recapture your youth!)

Bored of the gym - all that serious slogging away on the treadmill? Want to go back to those carefree days of childhood when exercise was just like playing?

Want an exercise you can even do inside if you don't mind breaking lamps and family members laughing at you?

Please note you don't have to do both if you don't want to!

NB skipping can be tough on the knees, especially if you still have a lot of weight to lose, so please be careful to wear good equality trainers to mimise impact, try a softer surface and stop if it hurts!

NB Hula hooping can be tough on your dignity. Please only attempt it with a silly grin on your face.

    How to sign up:
    1) Copy and paste your name onto the list in the post below this one
    2) State your MONTHLY jump rope minutes goal like this JR 5/20 IF DOING
    4) State your MONTHLY hula-hooping minutes goal as HH 5/20 IF DOING
    3) Report as often as you like by updating the ENTIRE list

I use one with weights. In fact I have two, one with a diameter of about 22" (without weights) and another of 34" (with weights)... but I like the larger one more, because it allows you to exercise better on music (you can alternate the speed easier).

Hula hooping is really easy once you learn the moves. To keep the hula at the level of your waist just put one leg in front of the other, bend your knees a bit, and... have fun.

I purchase the HH from walmart yesterday but I was interested in the one with weights but the HH i purchased is medium I think that I need to get the large one so it can allow me room to move. Thanks for the advice.

I have tried doing squats while hooping tonight, and as crazy as this might sound it is a brilliant cardio exercise! I think the best part of it is that it forces you to do the squats slower than you would normally, so you really feel the muscles work (I hope I won't feel them tomorrow though ). Plus, you save a lot of time!

When you squat with the hula hoop, you have to go down slowly if you want to keep the hoop around your waist (otherwise you might get it around your neck... happened here ). Then you will have to maintain the squat position for a few moments, until you bring the hoop parallel to the ground again. And then you go back up, where you'll have to hoop classically for about 10-15 second, until you get the hula hoop from your hips back on the waist.

I don't like squats in general because they can get pretty boring, but combined with hooping they are really fun (they get even better if you listen to some funky music ).
