First of all, congrats on a great run!!! :yes

How about having your son sign up for local road races? Often times they have a category for the 18 & under crowd, so even though it's an adult event, he can still compete with kids around his age. Although, I think road racing is more about competing with yourself and trying to beat your time, so he might like that aspect of it as well. The entry fees are usually only $10-$20 and there's a great sense of comraderie and excitement there.

ok hello, I did it. I have a bad "bug" sore throat, stuffy nose, nausea. But I ran my 4 anyway!!! I would hate to be the next person on the path as I was spitting everywhere, but sometimes ya just gotta do what ya just gotta do. Everyone is doing so well. Keep it going.

Carole-- Does his school have a cross country team? See ya tomorrow guys.

I SO AGREE! Races are so addictive and there's nothing like pushing yourself in the heat of competition!!

Perhaps also get him interested in body building/strength training .. its a guy thing....

Carole - both the 5k and 10k races I've just done had associated 'fun-runs' for the under 18s. My 9 year old ran in them and earned himself two shiny medals. I'm not sure a 13 year old would be quite so keen, but it would be worth a try. Otherwise, training and entering 'real' road races together would be fun. I'm homeschooling my 9 year old, too!

I'm still fighting TOM and managed a 2 mile walk/run. Just about. I felt like I was made of lead the whole way round - I never managed to move fast enough to get out of breath...

And on a totally different note, I was going to announce that moving day is Wednesday next week, and that the surprise wedding was going to be this Friday!! BUT.... It turns out the special license that means you just give two days notice was abolished several years ago :sadblinky SO we had to give 15 days notice. :confused So, moving day is going to be on Monday 27th, and the not so surprise wedding is going to be on Friday 24th. It also seems that it is now compulsory to have a 'reading' and some music. Erk... *All* our cds are 1500 miles away, and we both hate music anyway, so we have to go and try to find some rain-forest recordings from somewhere and use those. That just leaves the non-nauseating reading to find. And one more witness. I don't suppose there are any Worzel Gummidge fans out there that happen to know the words the crowman used for Aunt Sally's wedding? Something about apples for health and berries for happiness?

Hi everyone! I'm SOOO stoked on what I did today, so I'm gonna bore ya with a long post!

About six years ago I had a bad skiing accident and totally messed up my left knee. I was overweight at that time too (although not as obese as I later became) and really fell into a pattern of inactivity and weight gain. When I started Atkins last August, I started walking on my treadmill and outside a couple of times a week. As I started losing weight, my confidence started to build and I'd walk more. My husband and I decided to take up curling for the winter and I even got back to skiing. I really started liking being more active. In about November, I discovered the Couch to 5k program and Body for Life weight training program so I started to do them. I had NEVER ran in my life (okay, except in grade 9 and only when the teacher was looking...I'm 42 so that's a long time ago). I was loving it. Then a couple of good girlfriends convinced me to train for a triathlon. I thought what the ****, and started learning to cycle and swim.

I had gotten to the point that I was running 5k three times a week and really advancing on my weight training. In February, we entered a competitive two day bonspiel (a curling tournament) and I blew my other knee! Long story short, no running, cycling swimming for a long time. Lots of therapy, orthotics etc. I had started swimming and upper body weights and just when I was about to start running again....I wrecked my shoulder, tore my deltoid and ruptured the bursa around my deltoid. Pain..holy crap. That was about six weeks ago. They figure up to six months for that to heal. Anyways, the pain is managed so that I could start again (as you guys know). Because it had been so long since I had ran (and I'm still really overweight) I decided to start the couch to 5K from the beginning. It's been going great over the past two weeks since I started. I come here and read all the great things you guys are accomplishing and get to thinking....I want to train to run longer than 5k. It'll help with the triathlon training which I love, but I really like running. So, I find this awesome 10k training program.

SportMedBC is BC's most trusted Event Medical Services and Sports Medicine Directory. Acclaimed RunWalk and Sport Safety Training Programs.

I thought what the ****...I'm starting over walk/running anyways....why don't I just go a wee bit longer. But this is the kicker....I started that program today and I ran outside!!! All of my running has been on a treadmill. I have fairly bad asthma and many of my triggers are environmental. I'm really effected by weather (humidity, cold etc). I'm allergic to trees and grasses and pollens. Running inside I can control the environment...but I knew I had to get out if I want to compete. My asthma has gotten extremely better since losing almost 75 pounds, there's no doubt about it but I do have to be aware of other things. Well, today I strapped on my heart rate monitor, grabbed my new stop watch and a bottle of water, took my asthma drugs and out I went.
And I did it!!!! I did session one run/walking for 46 minutes. Man, what a difference running outside, holy crap! I use inclines all the time on the treadmill but wow, this was way harder. Granted, I live out in the country and it's quite hilly. My run out was mostly downhill with a mother of a big steep hill and the end and boy could I feel the return run as it was mostly uphill. I did feel a bit more impact on my knees, but no pain. My feet, shins, calves and pelvis feel good. My asthma was pretty good too.

This was really a huge step for me. I still can't believe I did it. I still can't believe how much harder it was running outside. I still can't believe I've taken the first step to learn to run 10K! I can't wait until Thursday to do it all again!

            And it's all your fault!!!

Ok much better today. Most likely due to the fact that I took two Tylenol Cold's, 3 Advil, and a slug from the Clorseptic bottle before I started. I ran 3 miles in @35 min and walked the last one as today is a Tae Bo day. Does your heart rate take into account illness? I haven't started using a monitor yet, I am just curious. It seems logical that your body would be working harder as it is combating an illness. Great Job this week everyone. Way to Go Diane.--- Ester you are such an inspiration. What a lucky boy your son is. :nod

                    Hey all,

Diana - Man, there is NO stopping you! Congrats on this milestone of sorts, and keep it up!

I did my 3 loops at the park again today. Today's time-- 26:45! I started exercising just this past Saturday, running that same loop, and I've already shaved 3:15 off my time. Not bad!

I still don't know the distance, but I'm guessing it's about 2 miles for 3 loops. I might have to start doing 4 loops pretty soon!

                    Take care,

I couldn't get on the board today but, I have lost 70 pounds as of this morning everyone. I have a quickie question for BETTY.

I was running yesterday and I started to get what I think is heart burn. I ate 1.5 hours before I rean and went 30 minutes but, I could have gone longer if it wasn't for my heartburn. It felt almost like it does when you are starving aadn your tummy really hurts and like heart burn. I have never had this before and hopefully don't again but, I was just curious as to why this is happening now???

Are you sure it wasn't a side stitch? Those are quite common when you try to run and haven't allowed enough time for your food to digest. That happens to me too once in a while, depending on what I have eaten and how long I waited after eating before running.

2 hours is a good rule of thumb .. you want your body to be able to concentrate on burning fat and calories, without trying to digest food at the same time.

WAIT A BIT LONGER BEFORE RUNNING NEXT TIME, SWEETIE!! I know you're like me and can't wait to get out there ... I'm dying today being sick and unable to run!! :anger

I'm sure it wasn't a side stitch have had those and this was totally different it actually felt like my stomach was on fire. After I finished running it almost went away so I'm not sure what's up with that.

I swam 400m before work this morning and came home and did an hour of upper body weights.

Thanks for the get well wishes everyone. I hope (fingers crossed) I have gotten rid of that nasty bug. DH brought steak home for dinner and I had a little .. I am nervous though .. hoping I didn't overload my tummy too much. You guys know what a carnivore I am ... put a ribeye in front of me and ALL is right with the world! :nod

I probably won't go to work tomorrow since I have work I can do here ... best not to push it just yet, still have a low-grade fever and headache going on.

It will be at least Friday before I run ... grrrrrrrrr. Maybe Saturday since I was down to 93 pounds today and very weak.

You're all doing GREAT!! I'm so proud of all of us!

PS .. I have to tell you guys this: We had some mulch delivered this morning for the backyard by our local nursery. So I walked out there to make sure they were doing things right and the lady said 'man, you look fit! You a runner?' I said, "yes, as a matter of fact." She said 'you definitely have a runner's body.'

MADE MY DAY, SICK OR NOT!

That is an awesome compliment, Betty. And well yeah, d'uh, you ARE a runner!

I was up at 6:30 this morning to do my run. **** has frozen over. In my excitement to start running outside on Tuesday, I ran at 1:15 in the afternoon. I thought the road would be shaded as it's mostly through forest except for an open space where there is a big horse farm. Uhhh...wrong...the sun shone done directly overhead and it was about 30C with lots of humidity. It was brutal. I didn't want to do that again so I thought the best thing would be before work in the morning, at least during the summer. I don't know about you guys, but if I run in the evening I'm awake all night. The temperature was perfect this morning but it's gonna be a scorcher today. I had to laugh though. Even though the road was shady most of the way and there was a nice small breeze, every time I had to do my walking sections I was swarmed with mosquitos! I sooo wanted to run longer distances but I was good and stuck to the training program!

I'll be in the pool tonight at 7:30 for a 400-500m swim.

                                Have a great day everyone.
