Re: Cool Running for the week of 7/10/05

Sarah, that's awesome! Onederland is just around the corner! I'm back from my cottage where I did lots of swimming and hiking (not to mention cleaning...blechhh). Today was an upper body weight day and I went to a friend's place after for a swim in her pool. We've just started another terrible heat wave that's supposed to last for two weeks. Up to over 40C and supposed to be worse by Wednesday. They've declared a heat emergency down in the city (Toronto) where there have already been five deaths. The humidity and air quality is terrible. We'll see if I'll be able to run in the morning with the asthma thing!

Sarah, you are a tremendous inspiration to me! And from the looks of it we should both be entering Onederland around the same time. I am trying not to count my chickens before they hatch, but I was down another 2.5 this morning, and am crossing my fingers to get there before the end of the month (when I will be forced to put on a bathing suit).

I went for the first run of Week 4 of C25K last night and had a blast. It was humid and nasty outside but I felt like I could go forever anway. Having an iPod with good music helped, I must say. I'm a sidewalk runner and my neighborhood is very untrafficed so running with music works for me.

Hope you're all having a good week.

Just finished 6 miles at noon. Took it slow and burned 601 calories. Wanted to go 8, but a monsoon moved in, so I cut it short.

I did my run this morning. 58 minutes of walk/run (5 minutes of running with 1 minute of walking). With this heat the mosquitos are gone, but man, I was swarmed with deerflies for the entire time. Ouch!

I worked out with my trainer today for an hour, doing weights, resistance, lunges and stretching. Then I did 40 minutes on the elliptical and burned 478 calories. I would have gone my full 60 minutes, but my feet were killing me.

My trainer told me to get better shoes, so I bought Addidas cross trainers - well those things killed my arches, so then I bought New Balance cross trainers and although I can workout with her in them, they KILL my feet on the elliptical. I think I just have cheap feet - they like inexpensive shoes from Payless and Walmart.

"Cheap Feet" LOL is the rest of you cheap as well?? JK I adore you cajunthunder!!!

I go my 5miles at 5am done this morning. There is a couple that I have seen walking on my route for three weeks now. I give them words of encouragement when I pass and they are very friendly. If I see them out next week I am thinking about printing them up some shirts. Something like "offical member Texas Early Risers Club---Get up! Get out! Get moving!" What do you think? I don't get much company and I want to keep them motivated.

Jim and Betty ---There is a huge event in our area on Nov. 6th called simply The Half. As is sounds it is a half marathon or 13.? miles. Is it too ambitious for me to shoot for this? If not how should I build up to it? I was thinking to continue with working on 4x 5 mile runs and a long Saturday run adding distance each week? They also have a 5k if I am not able to reach the half marathon level before this date.

Sarah, I hope you are feeling better. We are anxiously awaiting you race debute.

                  Keep it up everyone.

Hehehe, yep, I'm a pretty low maintenance kinda girl...! Don't need no pricey thingamabobs and whatchamacallits.

And if I could figure out a way to workout barefoot, I would! I watch those pilates women on the other side of the gym and I'm always envious of their bare feet!

Oh, btw, I love your tshirt idea!!

Check out NIKE Rifts. This is what I use and I love them. They were designed for Kenyan Long Distances Runners who are used to going barefoot. Shoes like everthing else about this WOL are very individual, but you might give them a try.

I can only wish I had cheap feet............. My New Balance 1221s are my all time favorite running shoe and my feet love them. They're definitely not cheap, but I don't like pain, so for me, its worth the investment.

I just finished 6 miles. My goal was 8, but it was thundering and raining the last mile, so I called it quits. I did burn 601 calories, so that was a pretty good workout. That gives me 16 miles for the week thusfar, so I have to hit it hard the rest of the week to get my 35 miles in!!

                        Happy running everyone!

Betty, you really burn up the roads! Way to go! I actually peeled myself out of bed this morning at 6 to run because I got a HRM yesterday (Polar A3) and wanted to try it out. I only got in a mile and a half before I had to get home and ready for work, but I'm going out again tonight to try it. It was fun! I got home and wrote my time/hr/etc all down in my log so I could remember it and discovered on the run that my normal (ie: slow!) pace is right where I should be aiming. Or at least I think so. The HRM didn't ask my weight, just age, so I guess that's all I need to discover what my optimal HR should be for fat burning?

You are all inspirations to me. Hope everyone is having a great day!

Congrats, Reveal, for getting a HRM. You will LOVE IT! I love mine and am approaching that amazing 100,000 calories burned mark!! That will be a ROYAL CELEBRATION FOR ME!! I'd love to get to the point where I burn 3,500 calories a week .. that's a pound a week! Not that I need to lose more weight, but it would be awesome to think I'm burning off a pound every week!! More steak!! YAHOO!!

Tex, are you able to run an hour or more without stopping? My half marathon I've signed up for in January (Disneyworld) requires a 16 minute mile minimum. I can do an 11 minute mile easily, so I know I am ready. Someone told me a long time ago, not to shoot for anything more than a 10k until you can run an hour easily. Well, a 10k is 6.2 miles and a half marathon is 13.1 ...

I'd say add 10% a week to your training runs and if you can get to the 10 mile mark easily (within 2 hours), then you're ready for a halfer. Just my opinion!!

Don't over do it ... don't want to risk injury ... there will be other halfers in your future .. better to take it slow!!

Do what you can and what you can do without pain! That is most important!

                                Betty,

My 5 @ 5 takes me 45-50 min. My 6.3 miles last week took me an hour and 20 min.(much more uphill than my normal route) I don't walk during my runs. I will try to add 10% on my Saturday run making it hmm?? 6.93 miles. I will let you know how it goes.
