  • Cool Running for the Week of July 31, 2005

Man oh man, can you believe it? Its the end of July and school starts here this week .. incredible how fast the summer is flying by!!

No run for me today. After yesterday's 12.65 miles, I can use a day of rest. Tomorrow, I'll be back running over the lunch hour with the group from work. Alot of 'em have wimped out since the dog days are upon us, but there are a few of us dedicated ones that will NEVER give in to heat/humidity!! Just makes us all look forward to fall and winter .. when the weather is perfect for running!!

Hope you all have a terrific week of running! Set your sights high!!

Well, I was planning on running 8 miles this morning. However it was so cool out and I felt so good that I went ahead and did 9 miles!!! Last week 8 in 1:36 this week 9 in 1:40. The plan is to step my Tue-Fri Runs up to 6 miles, but I may just add in speed work in the evening in addition to my 5.5 @ 5am. Really just depends on the hubbys work schedule.

I contiue to be impressed everyday by my friends here on the . I hope everyone is feeling better this week and is ready to go tear up the road!!!

Tex, you are amazing! I can't believe the speed at which you are improving your weekly runs!

Betty, school starts in July???? That's cruel & unusual punishment. Enjoy your rest day!

As for me, I did my 5.4 mile run again today -- same route I did last Sunday. My time was 1:13:53, about 2 minutes faster than last week. My MP3 player died about 22 minutes into the run, so that sucked. It was drizzly the whole time, which I didn't mind because at least it kept me cool. Jealous, Betty? I'm off to volunteer at the folk festival for 5.5 hours, so my poor feet are going to be screaming something wicked tonight!

Yep, here, school starts tomorrow or Thursday, depending on which county you're in. Ugh .. more traffic!

Yes, I am jealous of your cool drizzle! All I get is a steamy sizzle!

Man, don't ya hate when the MP3 player quits? I had to replace mine just a week ago! Run without music? NO WAY!

Effie--I can't believe it either. I get in my car to check the distance about once a week, because "I" can't possible be running 8 miles or more!! The half mile lap I use to do my weekly runs has been checked about 15 times. LOL

Betty, you are almost to Tx--on the way to Galveston-- you will feel a breeze soon!!!

Oh and I don't run with any music. This is the only time I get to myself. No children or dogs, or hubbies with needs or barks or whines. I enjoy the silence.--I love my family. But oh how I enjoy the quite sound of nature. ( I live and run in a pretty rural area).

NEVER SAY ITS NOT IMPRESSIVE!! Any run of ANY length is FABULOUS!! Hey, I remember when 6 blocks was a major accomplishment for me!! Keep at it and you'll pass us up sooner than you think!!

I just finished 6 miles in the noonday sun. Burned 564 calories and did it in a little over an hour.

I am grateful for the encouragment betty...thank you so much

hehe Gotta love lack of soreness, but...hope that doesn't mean your body has adjusted...time to hit it harder!

Today I did 3 miles! I am not to proud of the time which leads me to my next question for you more experienced runners. The program guide says you can either go by time or distance. I chose distance because I figured that as long as I got the distance down, my speed will increase and also when I get smaller. As I was looking at the chart again today I noticed it said only to do it for 20 minutes???

so do you think I did right, and took the time to complete the distance? or should I follow the 20 minute guide? which will be the best for performance?

Hey I was MIA I have been Biking to offset my not running and also I was swimming which is cool. I ran for the first time since last Monday did pretty well I am feeling pretty good lungs are still congested but, they are prettyy good. I put the speed up and went 4.7 mph then cranked it up to 5 and down to 4 up to 4.6 then to 5 again so I went 2 miles in 26 miles which is prettyy good to me. I am sure the distance on my treadmill is screwed cause of my time in my 10 k I am sure it's wrong I am probably going a lot farther but, I don't know how to tell with the treadmill and all. Any ideas.

I am very happy that I ran it felt really good but, it's so damn hot I feel like I am melting I don't know how humid or the heat index no idea but it was +32C here and nastie.

Fighting, you are 100% correct that by increasing your distance, your speed will automatically increase with time. VERY GOOD!! Alot of folk put too much emphasis on increasing speed which typically leads them to burn out .. not a good plan at all. MUCH BETTER TO GO SLOWER LONGER. Not only will you increase your stamina and endurance, but you will burn FAR MORE BODY FAT by taking it slower for a longer distance. Trust me, your speed *will* increase, albeit slowly. Just be patient. YOU'RE DOING FABULOUS!

Sarah, so glad you're feeling better. Take it easy, hon, so you don't have a relapse. WE WANT YOU HEALTHY!

Tex, you are some kind of animal! Just like me!! Hey, girlie, the typical rule of thumb is NOT to increase your distance more than 10% at a time in order to avoid injury .. just something to keep in mind. Its not a RACE (literally) to increase miles .. just a slow steady increase is what you really want. Challenge yourself, but not to the point of burnout, k?? I don't want you to hurt yourself!!

I plan another 6 miles tomorrow if I don't die in the heat! Gad, when will this summer end? Two months of oppressive heat and humidity to go...........

GREAT JOB EVERYONE! WE ARE ROCKIN'!!
