Re: Cool Running for the Week of July 31, 2005

3 miles for me this morning, 34:31. The half training program that I'm following (Hal Higdon's) has me gradually increasing my long runs every Sunday, but it jumps from 10 miles the week before the half, right to the half itself. That makes me nervous. I think I'd like to work up to 12 at least, and not wait until 1 week before the race to do that. So, I'm not backing down or anything, but I think it's entirely possible that I might not actually run the half. If I'm not prepared, I won't do it, but I'm still sticking to my training like glue!

Fighting - You're doing the C25K, and you're already up to 3 miles after 1 week? I bet you're one of those people that skips to the last chapter of the book, huh?

Re: Cool Running for the Week of July 31, 2005

I'm back doing the c25K. Restarted last week and on W1D2 again... But it was much easier this time. A couple of times today I ran 70 seconds instead of the 60 called for int he program. Total was 2.2 miles. I'm not too concerned about distance or time, mostly stamina.

But I have a question. When you all first started running, did you stop losing or even gain a pound or two? I'm counting on this being new muscles being worked and water retention since nothing else has changed for me.

Totally iwritedoc I gained a bit 5 pounds when I first started but, it alll came off and I am smaller and leaner with a fair bit of muscle mass 147 lbs of it LOL. Don't worry about small gains they are nothing if you're woring your atkins and not eating unacceptable foods the gain is temporary and you'll see a loss in no time.

Re: Cool Running for the Week of July 31, 2005

Sarah is right; weight gains typically show up in the beginning of any rigorous exercise plan .. not to worry .. its only temporary .. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

Effie, I also read that once you can do 10 miles, you're ready for a halfer .. not sure I agree with that .. I am following a similar training plan as you .. working my training runs up to that 13 mile mark rather than assuming I can do 13 cuz I can do 10!! THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE WHEN YOU ADD 3 MORE MILES ON TO A RUN!!

I've been running over 12 miles consistently for the past 3 Saturdays .. I am here to tell you, the last mile is ALWAYS the most grueling for me .. at that point, THE WILL TO FINISH TAKES OVER THE BODY ... The body calls it quits at 10 or so.........

I want to finish the halfer in January RUNNING .. which for me means, I will continue to train for ALL 13.1 miles between now and then.

I ran 4 miles today at noon. Wanted to go 6, but the humidity took its toll. The temp was near 90 and the humidity was 72%. Can you say STEAMBATH? Grrrrrrrrrr. My face looked like a tomato when I got done with 4 and I was feeling a bit nauseas. I think I need to eat a bit more for brekkie!

Thanks for the confirmation Betty and Sarah. I was pretty sure that was the case and I will just not worry about the scale right now.

Another question for you Betty. Do you have shower facilites at work? I see you run at lunch time a lot. We don't and my best place to run/walk is on the way in to work in the morning so I have to clean up when I get there. I read some info on coolrunning that some use the towellettes you can get a Target and such. I just feel yuck when I get finished now I can't imagine what it will be like when I am actually running a mile or so straight...

OH YES, THANKFULLY, WE HAVE SHOWERS!! Mercy, the way I sweat out there .. its brutal!

How hot is it for you to run in the mornings? Do you sweat alot? Some people in my lunch group don't sweat much .. I am so envious!

The towelettes sound like a good option for you! Otherwise, can you bring a washcloth and towel to work in a bag and then do a quickie clean up in the bathroom after you get to work? I usually rinse my face in the bathroom sink before I shower, just to get the sweating to stop .. no sense taking a shower until the sweat quits dripping!

Trust me, your speed *will* increase, albeit slowly. Just be patient. YOU'RE DOING FABULOUS!
I knew I "heard" you say that before, and had it in the back of my head. 3 miles in 55 minutes isn't bad I guess. And I am definitly sure it will increase.

ighting - You're doing the C25K, and you're already up to 3 miles after 1 week? I bet you're one of those people that skips to the last chapter of the book, huh?
Well, in my head I knew the goal was 3 miles, so somewhere along the way I told my self that I will be running distance and since 3 miles is my goal I figured I would do it until I can run it with out stopping. The distance was no problem, after the run I went on with my day as if nothing happened. I just need to be able to run more than a minute an a half at a time lol

No running for me today, biking and Weight training for me.

Betty, Just so I know I have this right...continue to run the 3 miles, follow the weeks of C25K reguaraly and my time will definitley shorten.

                Thats some cool running.

Betty, unlike you in Florida, I like the mornings (8:00 ish) right now because I run along SF Bay and it is usually foggy... (It's too windy to run in the afternoons). So sweating is minimal but still I feel a bit sticky when I get to work. The towel and washcloth is a great idea and probably enough to do the trick. I work with five guys so the ladies room is all mine for the most part. So I can stock what I want in there.

I did weights today trying to get back into it and it went well I did only 1 set of everything but my muscles are fatigued from that. I have been slacking in the weight department but, I will get back to it. I love running more then weights though I want a whole package so I have to quite neglecting that area. I wanna be buff with a 6 pac when I reach goal.

Hi!!! Our ISP went dead yesterday. I missed you all so much!!! I did my 6 miles yesterday.

This morning I wanted to try something different. My loop is one half mile, so for my six I do 12 loops, which gets kind of boring when you are counting loops. So I broke it down into 3 sets of 4 loops. I ran three easy loops then one fast loop (x3). I loved it, it felt like "training" as opposed to "running" I ran 6 miles in under 60min.

I am using the 10-25% increase rule, so as not to get hurt. Also, don't throw things, but as a stay at home mommie, I get to take a nap during the day with my little guys if I need to and this really aids in recovery.
Everyone is doing so well, way to go. See you tomorrow.--if the dang isp holds up.

Tex, you seriously run the same loop that many times? Tell me you're not running 18 loops on your 9 milers??? My loop at the park is .75 mile, and 4 loops is just about all I can do before I go crazy.

I think mixing up your routine like you did is a great idea. Not only does it cut the boredom, but it's probably helping increase your speed as well. The first training program I ever followed was designed like that, and I loved it. Instead of just running X miles day after day, it went like this:

                          Monday - 20 minute jog
                          Tuesday - cross-train or rest
Wednesday - the first 8 weeks had interval training, the second 8 weeks had mid-distance tempo runs
                          Thursday - 30 minute jog
                          Friday - cross train
                          Saturday - Long Run
                          Sunday - Rest
(err.. something like that, I'd have to look it up to be sure, but you get the idea!)

I loved it because the weekday workouts were so doable, and the one long run was just on Saturdays. The wednesday runs were fun to do, because it was either intervals (like what you did) or just a tempo run, and for those I'd try to find a mid-week race and use that as my tempo run. The training program I'm on now is one I don't really like, which I think I've mentioned before. Everyday it's just run X miles, and it seems a lot more overwhelming that way than just "jog 20 minutes".

No running for me today. I was going to go rollerblading, but now it's too late so I guess this is just another rest day.

No, my long runs are 2miles out 2miles back (x2) with 2 loops for nine, or just out and back (x2)for 8. I will try to mark out a new course this week with just 5 out and back. I try to change my long run course with every increased distance. I am "just a mom" I am not sure I could count high enough to do my nine miles on my loop. JK LOL!!

Not sure if it counts as an interval or a long run, as I did not rest between sets, but I enjoyed it either way!!

I use this for my week day runs because I go so early and I get a little scared of the dark and no one around. I just feel more comfortable on this loop as there are houses and lights all the way around, as opposed to my long run where there is a long strech of no houses or lights. Since I run later on Sunday's the sun is out and I am not such a scaredie.

I'm here and faithfully working out! I'm trying to get my butt moving to the gym this morning. I'm suffering from PRAD (Post Rachel Achy Disorder) - Rachel is my trainer! Man, some of the places you get achy are places you didn't even know COULD get achy!

I've gotta get in the kitchen and fix some breakfast - a daily challenge when nothing really sounds good!
