That is a very rude and insensitive statement, especially to those just starting their running 'career'. If I had been told in the beginning if I didn't WIN, I'd be humiliated, I never would have started.
Geesh. have a heart. Give people credit for getting out there. Maybe for men, its a WIN AT ALL COSTS mentality, but for us women, we are champions for effort.
I ran 5k on the treadmill at the gym last night and I did it in 35 minutes. First time ive managed it this year and I was quite happy with the time.
Ive got a 10k race in a month and Im aiming to do it in 1hr 10 minutes.
Just been able to last that long is a treat to me, I could care less about the time if im truthful.
What do the second line numbers under your pictures mean?

Help me lose these legs!!!!!!!! My Fitday July 2 2005
I run 5 k in 40 minutes outside so I am happy with that. In the womens devision of my last race the fastes 5 k was in 15 minutes by a man the woman who won did it in 25 minutes.
I think it's great you're getting out there but, when you start don't think about being the fastest just get out there and do it. That's what I did I did a 10K in 80 minutes so I was very happy. I finished. You wanna see a competative person here I am I push myself to stupid levels to get further faster. SOme of that is good I think I am lucky I have not injured myself. Take it slow to start and go from there.
I think you'll do awesome

I started off with walking 10k and it took me about 1hr 30 minutes, so your not far behind me.
Im also trying to expand my lung capacity as my breathing is the only thing that is holding me back from going faster. I run as fast as I can for 1 minute and then walk for 1 minute and I do this for 10-15 minutes twice a week. Its already having a noticeable effect.

That's my problem too. Lung capacity. I'll give your suggestion a try. Thanks.

So is there a difference between running on a treadmil and running outside? Is there is, why is that?
So is there a difference between running on a treadmil and running outside? Is there is, why is that?
Huge difference IMO. Running on a treadmill is what I like to call pseudo-running. You are running with the help of a machine that is doing the work of "thrusting" your body in a forward motion. Personally, I've never felt like I've had a good workout on a treadmill.
Running outdoors provides lots of challenges that a treadmill cannot replicate, such as dealing with differences in temperatures, humidity, wind, curves, surface changes (from concrete to asphalt to grass/dirt, etc). When you run outdoors YOU have to provide all the forward energy; there is nothing mechanical that pulls you forward. Running outside gives your abs, back and legs much more of a workout than a treadmill can.
And personally, I think standing in one place for a couple of hours is the epitome of dull compared to running 2 hours on a running trail, taking in the fresh air, enjoying the change of landscape, etc.

Absolutely no comparison.

Oh, good points. So the time I can achieve on a treadmill may not be the same time I can achieve running outdoors then, right? I have to start somewhere so I'm starting on the treadmill and working up from there. It's way too hot to be running outside right now. I would pass out.
Not sure how a tread going backwards constantly can propel you forward but treadmills have little real world resistance to deal with too, the course is levle every step, no wind, nor change in the frictional force on your shoes, no side hills, etc so it is easier on the legs and the balance muscles conpensation factor.
Did you know running is actually the art of losing your balance by falling forward and then catching yourself before you go down. Scary thought isn't it.
if you want your treadmill to be about the same effort as running outside increase your incline to about 1.5 out of a 10 range.
You can't increase your lung volume as that is set by your genes but you can improve your bodies abilkity to create fuel without oxygen like the beta oxidation of the fatty acids making ATP and clearing the part needed for oxygen when it isn't avail by making ketones and shipping that stuf elsewhere so you don't clog the reaction sites.

Happy low carbing
Have fun
Oh cool. Thanks for the advise. So you're saying that being in ketosis will help my lung capacity problem?
your body will get more efficient at using what you got as it gets trained. We have several ways to generate power inside the body that don't use oxygen. Oxygen is the terminal step in the carb energy cycle and when you don't have enough the production line backs up so your body moves them to the lactic acid cycle which causes the burn in your mucles and you don't get as much energy produced per molecule started with. Fat burning just moves them to ketones and ships them to other not being used as vigorously muscles for fuel. (The exception to this is the heart which loves ketones as fuel even when it is working super hard.)
Your chest muscles will get stronger too as part of your training and you will be able to more forcefully expel the spent air which will get more out of there allowing more fresh stuff to enter. We don't always get all the old air out when we exhale and you can prove this to yourself by sitting here and taking a normal breath and exhale. now try to exhale more air. surprize there was still some in there wasn't there? so as your train you get better at getting more of that old used up air out and allowing more fresh oxyenated air to enter.
Contracting your thigh muscle in a few weeks will generate much more force then it does right now and you will not need so much fuel to do the same stuff too.
Also as muscle learn they have a certain required work load they store more fuels inside themselves to preform those actions with. This too will asssit your efforts. In a few weeks you will be amazed that you were posting about only going 51 min for the 5K walking I went from stuggling 2mph walking when I started out to over 7MPH on the inclines in less then a yr. I can now walk a 5K in close to 30 min.
