Re: Cool Running For the Week of September 11

Yesterday I did my first day of WEEK 4...yes, week 4 already...of Couch to 5K. 5 minute warm up walk followed by two sets of 3 minutes jogging, 90 seconds walking, 5 minutes jogging, and 2.5 minutes walking. Yes, I jogged for 5 minutes straight...twice! This may not seem like much to most people, but it is absolutely unbelievable to me. And I could have done more! I still think I am jogging slower than I could walk it, but I really don't care.

Less than 3 weeks to the Race For a Cure 5k!

      Yay Sarah! That's great!

I did my "long run" on Saturday. Long for me was just 3 miles at this point, but I did it in 38:13. Not a speedy gonzales pace, but even the idea of being able to run 3 miles is such a miracle I don't care! Hee!

Question: do you all ever walk on your runs? On runs of about 2 miles I don't, but on my 3 mile run I walked twice, probably for about a minute or less each time. I know that's not bad - everything I've read talks about the benefit of occasional walk breaks - but I can't help feeling like this is "cheating". Thoughts?

Nice job Sarah. You blow me away! Reveal, on my training program I was always doing a walk/run. I'm on the final week of my 10K program so yesterday I ran the 10K without any walking. I do always start with a five minute warm up walk and end with a five minute cool down walk which is not part of the distance. However, my other two runs of the week still encompass one minute walk breaks. So, tomorrow I'll run for ten minutes, walk one, repeat four more times. I think my Thursday run is run 20 minutes, walk one, run 15, walk one or something like that. I hope to do my first 10K race next Sunday! We'll see though, we're heading into Toronto for a concert (Apocalyptica if anyone knows 'em) and probably won't get home until 1 or 2 in the morning. The race starts at 8:30 am so we'll see how I feel.

Great job Sarah on the 10 miles(was that treadmill or road?) great time either way.

Life kinda got in the way last week hope to do better this week. Oh well see ya.

Re: Cool Running For the Week of September 11

It was treadmill cause outside isn't doable with my kiddos which suck I run faster outside the treadmill is only a guage I can run farther outside then inside funney hey and it takes me less time. This treadmill is really old so it doesn't surprise me.

When I do my runs I don't walk at all I am kind of nuts if I can't run it all I don't wanna do it the most I stop is to tie my shoe or change the treadmill to go incline LOL. My 10 miles that I did I stopped once to tie my shoe and that was it other wise it was 10 miles pure running no stoppage. I know I am nuts and you all can say so but., I am in such great shape I can't hardly belive it I don't know many who can do what I do whether they are big or small.

Re: Cool Running For the Week of September 11

Sarah - Congrats on the 10 miles. I can't even do 2 miles on the treadmill, so I admire your perseverance! You're not gonna have any trouble knocking out a Half.

Nikki - Week 4 already? Time flies huh? If you can run 5 minutes without stopping, you're golden. I can't wait to hear about your 5K!!!!

Reveal - The "walk break" argument can get pretty heated. Not so much on here because we're all so supportive, but if you go onto Coolrunning.com and bring it up, you'll get an earful from both sides. In a nutshell, the pro-walk break people think it's a great way to save your muscles, extend your endurance, and reach your ultimate goal which is covering the distance. Jeff Galloway is considered the "father" of the walk-break training regime, and he's done like 2842797384 marathons. The anti-walk break people think that if you have to walk, it's because you aren't pacing yourself properly. There are some that think if you have to walk in a race, you might as well drop out and try again next time. These die hards dislike Jeff Galloway and his followers (who they dub "Gallowalkers") and say they are ruining the sport of running because he's making it so anyone can run. Well, duh, isn't that the point?

Personally, I take a LOT of walk breaks. In my last 5K, I took 2 walk breaks at the water station, and then 2 additional walk breaks. I find that if I can get in the groove, I don't want to walk because it just slows me down. But, more often than not, I'm not in a groove, and the walk-break is my only saving grace if I want to finish with a smile on my face.

Re: Cool Running For the Week of September 11

                    You guys are my inspiration!

I'm not running (or jogging yet ), but I am walking and timing it.

I need to lose more weight and get the proper gear. So, my goal now is to see how fast and comfortable I can WALK one mile - then I'll bump it up to TWO miles, then a 5K.

By then, I figure I should be ready to start the Couch to 5K program.

What a great job everyone!!! Many congrats and thanks for being my inspiration!!!

Re: Cool Running For the Week of September 11

                      Hey Punkin-kid,
Welcome! I think it's great that you're starting off walking. We all did it! I know for me, the hardest part of running is actually getting out the door. Starting a regular program like you're doing is laying the groundwork for a very successful program. You'll be starting the Couch to 5K in no time! Take a look at it if you haven't already. You might want to do the week 1 workouts for a while before moving on, and you could start doing those as soon as you can walk 1 mile. Sorry, not trying to pressure you, but you're gonna love it!!!

I rollerbladed 3 miles this morning at the park. Two days in a row I've been out the door at 7:30. I'm starting to like this regular routine stuff. I also think it helps that in the past week I've rearranged & painted my bedroom and we got a new dryer that works. For the past couple of weeks, I had clothes hanging on every doorknob and piece of furniture in the house, and my bedroom furniture was all crunched in the middle of the room for the painting, so I couldn't get into any of my drawers or find anything clean to wear. Living in Chaos is not recommended.

Reveal, walking isn't cheating. It's interval training! As you get more fit, you'll find more of your workouts are running and less walking. This is always the way I've trained.

Thanks for the great advice, guys! I really just wanted some input, though I know that the answer was likely to be "it depends." I think all sensible answers are "it depends" because everyone is different - what stalls me on Atkins or helps me feel satisfied is different, and my running experience is different. Thank you all for being so willing to share your tips and offer advice from your experience. We've got a good thing going on here!

I think for the time being I'll continue to walk when I really need to. I do find that when I walk now it's so I can stretch my hip muscles by really striding out, or kind of walk and stretch my back, etc. I do a lot less of it than I used to, but there are times when I fight that voice inside me that says "you might BE running, but you're not a RUNNER" and that voice has been pointing out my walk breaks as proof of that. That voice sucks.

                          Y'all are great. Thanks!

I did 2 miles last night, and am going to try to do a speedwork run this evening. I haven't quite figured out what this means yet, but I think it might be good for me.

Also? Yogurt and pecans after a run? YUM!

I ran my 5K this morning then jumped on my bike for the 10K ride into work. We're getting brutal heat and humidity again (over 30C yesterday and today) so I'm glad I did my run at 6:30 am. The ride home's gonna be yucky.

                            Have a great day everyone!

I ran outside today for some rason it's sooo much easier to do it outside and I run like the same distance way faster Funny hey. It was good think I went 4 miles not too sure but I am sure it's pretty close. I don't know it just feels so much easier to do it outside and I run sooo much faster I guess with the treadmill mess up I am running about 5 miles per hour cause that 4 took me 45 minutes Pretty darn awesome.
