  • Cool Running for the Week of September 18th

I had to start this thread this week because I'm soooo psyched!!! I just finished my first 10K race and finished it in 71 minutes. The course was gruelling with several tough hills. Thank goodness I run a lot of hills, just not as many as this! Anyways, it made my day!!! Thanks for all the inspiration you guys. Couldn't have done it without ya!!

Thanks Betty! After the run DH (who ran it with me) and I went out for breakfast and had a big scoff. It's steak for dinner too! That was my first race ever. Thought I'd start with a 5K, but it just never worked out. It's hard to believe that a year ago I just started walking. Not power walking, just walking! I still have a lot of weight to lose and I can't even imagine what it will be like at my goal weight. Time is FOR SURE gonna tell!

Holly Carp Guy I have to Tell you First I wanna Say Congrats to You Isabeau That is totally excellent and a great time for your first 10 K WOOOHOOO FOR YOU!!!

So any how back to my storey I took out my Pedometer and set up the stride properly then ran 1 km outside it's almost perfect accurate within .01 which is pretty darn awesome. Well I decided to take it on my Treadmill and find out how far I am really running well I am totally Blown away Not only have I been running half marathon I did it in 2:24:40 HOLLY CRAP hey. Well on the treadmill which is totally off I decided to run the 11 miles according to my treadmill at the 11 mile mark I was in actuality at 14.1 miles which is 22.6 KMS. Can you belive I've been running this far for this long and didn't even know it. Funny how that works isn't it. I was wondering why it was so much easier to run outside. I am only doing half the milage as I do on my treadmill when it says the same distance SHEESH.

Well, any ways I am really proud of myself and really freaken sore and achey all over that's what ya get for pushing it right. LOL

        Rest day tomorrow.

Sarah and Diana, you gals are awesome!

I ran 4 miles this weekend, and am feeling very smug and self-satisfied about it! I called my Mom to brag and she said, "if you can run 4, you can run 6!" and I realized she was probably right. Yay! I think I'm going to be okay on my 8K in November if I keep this up. Hurrah!

Question for you all, do you take water with you on longer runs? I'm not worried about it at only 4 miles, but I wondered at what point - mile wise- you started carrying a water bottle?

I always take water on my long runs it's important to stay hydrated while running so you don't get sick after LOL. I have this awesome water battole and holder that sits on my back so it's out of the way, when I run outside I put it on, Run 5.5k stop by the house fill it up run another 5.5 k LOL And so on.

If I don't have water I feel more and more drained.

Since its so hot here .. I almost always carry a bottle with me if I run more than 5 miles. On Saturdays, DH follows me on the bike so he is in charge of the water bottle transport! Also, if I run on the trail, there are water stops along the way (thank you, upper Tampa Bay trail!!) so we can refill as necessary.

Also, make sure you are adequately hydrated for an hour before each of your runs. You will run better!!

I always bring water with me and make sure I hydrate before I run. I don't know about you guys, but I find running a psychological thing. On my long runs, I use 10 minute intervals to have a drink. Don't know why, but it helps me finish!

Re: Cool Running for the Week of September 18th

Of course all the pros have given great advise already, just wanted to add.

If you are running say 8 miles or more look in to something like propell or Poweraid Options (only 2 carbs per 8 oz.) to help replinish sodium and electrolytes(sp?)

Sarah--Isn't it amazing how they can stay up all night worrying you to death and then bounce out of bed at 6am the next morning roaring to go?

Definitely .. excessive sweating calls for electrolyte replenishment!! Water alone is not enough.
