I've learned over the past few weeks that taking break isn't all bad. Last night I ran hard and well .. probably due to the fact that I have had lots of rest days lately. So my new strategy will be Mon, Wed, Thurs & Saturday. To heck with making 1400 miles this year. I want to run WELL on the days I choose to run, instead of chalking up lots of half-hearted miles. I think I was burning myself out when I was running upwards of 40 miles a week. There's a point at which it becomes drudgery and its not fun any more. That's when you have to cut it back.

Good for you, Betty! It's quality over quantity. I once read an article by some runner (don't remember who or where), and he said that traditional training plans that tell you how many miles to run each week are crap. You end up sacrificing good workouts just to "get the miles in". They do help to get some people up & running, but once they've achieved the level of fitness and dedication that you have, Betty, it really doesn't make sense to be a slave to the miles. Listen to your body, kick butt on the days that you do run, and have FUN!

Thanks for your post. For some of us, we need to hear it from you in order to listen.

Two weeks and 4 days. The butterflys get bigger everyday. The most stressful part is getting a plan together to get my hubby and boys out the door and on the road with me at @6:30 am. Not an easy task especially for a Sunday.

Re: Cool Running for the week of October 16th

OK, so I haven't been posting--crazy here lately. I have been getting my runs in, but I have also been dealing with a slight foot injury/condition--Morton's Neuroma--so I take a break when I need to. Last Friday I went to the podiatrist, who diagnosed me with this, and taped my foot with a metatarsal pad to simulate using an orthotic--see if that would be the right solution for me. I ran 6 mi with Round Rock Fit Saturday--it was great! 56:50. So, I think orthotics will work--I'd like to avoid the shots and/or surgery...Anyways, I missed my run Mon a.m., b/c I only had 3 1/2 hrs of sleep and major allergies--worn out...I restarted my week yesterday and ran the 40 min--right about 4 mi...After that I subbed all day for 7th grade science, followed by an interview for a teaching position at that school, raced home, changed clothes, then drove out to RunTex, where our RRFit group was meeting to do our first hill training. We ran about 1 mi or so over to "the hill", did 5 repeats--YIKES!--, then ran/walked the mi back. My legs were really strong--it was just my conditioning going up that hill. Man, I should be in great shape when all of this is done! Anways, right after that training, I had to go record for our CD at church for over 2 hours, so I didn't get home until almost 10:00pm! Needless to say, I was quite tired, and gave myself another day off today. I will run my 45 min tomorrow and probably cut my 35 min run (which is SUPPOSED to be tommorrow) in half on Fri., just because Fri is supposed to be a rest day, and we have our 9 mi run Saturday--the longest I will have ever run, and I want to make sure I'm in good shape for it...

OK, enough rambling...Sarah--good for you deciding to go for the full marathon--you'll be great! If you want to come out to Texas, the Freescale Marathon here in Austin is known to be a great beginner marathon, and the new course is even faster than the first.

Betty--The marathon training program I'm a part of (USAFit) is set up on 4 days of running each week, with hill and speed training thrown in here and there, and it has proven to be a safe and effective way to train. It's always good to listen to your body and adapt as needed. No sense risking burnout or injury, eh?

Ya'll take care--have a good rest of the week! I probably will check back in after our long run on Sat.....

Re: Cool Running for the week of October 16th

Hey Bellinda thanks for the well wishes this is somehting I have wanted to do for a while but never had the courage to make it a goal until now. I am proud of that.

Betty I think it's great the decision you ahve made if you start to hate running you know you are overdoing it and it's time to cut back. I wanna be a runner for life so I will take your example and do just that if I ever get to the point of not wanting to do it or just having crappy runs. The only time right now I have ca ca runs is when I am close to tom. I am waiting it hasn't got to me yet but it will.

OK guys I am going to be kicking in the milage is there anything different I should be doing to fuel my body. I ahve been thinking of get some LV bread and putting PB on it in the morning what do you think would that be all right or should I just up my veggie carbs or what I am unsure as to what I need to do and need some help.

          Thanks a lot everyone

Good for you Betty. I ran 5k yesterday, 4k today and weights. Sarah, where are you on your Atkins? I suggest moving through OWL, getting an idea of your CCL and adjust accordingly while still following Atkins the way the good doctor suggested. There is no need to 'carb load' and there's tons of research to support that.

Re: Cool Running for the week of October 16th

Sarah, I think the LC Bread and PB sounds good. I've gone through all the rungs because I need a lot of variety in my diet, and I've found that bread just sets off my cravings, so I stick with brown basmati rice instead. I have about half a cup of that with some soy sausages and tomato/cucumber/cilantro/onion mixed in. That's my absolute favorite "running" meal, but I only have that on days when I'm going to run more than 4 or so miles. Maybe twice a week. I find having it a few times a week doesn't stall my weight loss and I can really tell a difference in my energy level on the run when I start with that. I just make sure to be really careful with my carbs the rest of the day, if that makes sense. I don't know, maybe it's psychological, but hey if that keeps me running longer, stronger then I'm all for it.

Experiment with the bread and PB to see if it helps. I had to do that when I was feeling really weak-legged all the time, and some things made me stall and others didn't. I don't want to stalll, of course, but weirdly at this point I'm just as anxious not to have a bad run. Amazing! Hee!

Hey you guys, I won't be around for a bit as I have to appear as a witness in this big court case (work related). Anyways, I promise you all I'll keep up with my training! Right now my weekly training looks like this: one long run (1.5-3 hours) and three shorter runs, weight training three times a week, swimming (400-750m) twice a week, cycling (10-30K) twice a week and curling twice a week. Did I mention I work full time? I'll check in when I can.

Good luck in court, Diana! Hurry back cuz we'll miss you! I have no doubts that you will keep up with your workouts! YOU ARE A ROCK!!!

I finished 5.3 miles tonight in an hour. Not bad considering it was a very stressful day and it was SUPER HUMID out there tonight. All I could think of was "is this the calm before WILMA??" Saying prayers for all of us here in Florida that God will keep us safe!!

                    to all!!

I didn't realize Wilma was headed your way, Betty. Keep safe!

I did 3 miles this morning, no walk breaks, 31:07. The no walk breaks milestone is a pretty big one for me. I'm definitely gonna kick butt on my 5K next week!
