    Running makes you fat????

Okay, so I posted a thread yesterday announcing that I’m training for the LA Marathon (which I am really excited about). So I was on the treadmill last night at the gym and had just finished 6 miles and this trainer pops up next to me on the other treadmill (startling me a bit) She starts asking me questions about the gym and what I do and what I like etc. I told her I was training for the marathon so mostly I was using my membership to use the treadmills because I didn’t feel safe running outside at night.

I asked her if she was “taking a survey” of members of the gym or if she was trying to promote personal training…..she said that basically she was trying to sell personal training. I told her that right now I wasn’t interested because after I get all my miles in for the marathon training, I don’t have time for any more training.

She then told me that she used to run about 32 miles a week (I’m doing about 34 I told her). She then told me that if I didn’t vary my cardio and do strength training that I would start gaining the fat back?!! Huh? I understand that strength training and mixing up your workouts is important, but that I would start gaining fat?

Has anyone heard of this before, because I thought it was a bunch of baloney and that she was just trying to sell me on personal training, that if all I did was use the treadmill, I was going to get fat. Again, I say, huh?!

    Any thoughts?

Did you tell her you were doing Atkins? Probably would have been another thing to try to mislead you on. I suppose if you're loading up on carbs like most of those people do, you might gain a little fat back....but on this WOE, there's NO WAY you have to worry about it.

Yeah, I heard this before. And when I questioned the guy who was telling me it, he basically said that when you work out, you get hungrier and then you eat more and then you gain wait. It didn't have anything to do with the exercise itself. I totally disagreed because when I exercise and walk...I feel better and more aware of my body so I'm not starving and eat more. I am more cautious of what I eat.

              Re: Running makes you fat????

this is from the fact that when inshape folk do marathon training they have to slow down the pace at which they run inorder to get all the milage in and the total workout calorie burn for all sessions for the week is less then it was before. Oprah Winfrey experienced it when she trained for her first marathon.

Since you are only increasing your workouts to get ready for your marathon you shouldn't have any trouble.

Another thing that happenes but it happens to all exercisers. As you get in better shape your body uses less cals to do the same workout so either you have to up your workout or lower your caloric intake inorder to maintain your weight.

              Happy low carbing,

                Re: Running makes you fat????

                No Betty! You’re not fat : )

No – I didn’t tell her I was on Atkins. Everyone on the gym is still on the calorie in – calorie-out lie trip.

Dream – She did say that my body would get used to the exercise and I would need to change it up (however my body is definitely not used to 6 miles jogs yet!!!!)

LadyinRed – I can only hope she meant PHAT!!!! : )

2Big – Thanks for the input. I am jogging longer and faster! So I shouldn’t be in danger.

What she said just stuck with me, not because it was true, but because it seemed so silly. There are so many variables with eating and exercise but basically she was telling me that if I didn’t “do what the personal trainers think is best” I’m going to get fat(ter) or am not going to continue to lose. It was just mean to target the fat girl on the treadmill whose face was as red as a tomato (I’m SURE she didn’t know I had just jogged 6 miles) she probably thought I just didn’t know what I was doing.

Now I think personal trainer could be a good option to check oneself in the rear, but I don’t agree with their eating pyramid/philosophy at all and don’t want that influence in my life.

Thanks for the input/reactions everyone. Just wanted to make sure that all my jogging isn’t making me fatter : )

I totally agree with this. We burn FAT for energy.

For me, running KILLS my appetite. After a long run, I am energized and not at all hungry! VIVA LA RUNNING!

                      Re: Running makes you fat????

her point was valid. as you got in better shape and you didn't either increase your distance speed or time you would be burning less cals and as a result gaining weight. you can check it on the treadmill if you want punch in your starting weight and do your current workout you will see howmany burnt cal you are missing cause you lost weight I know for me just doing my after lifting 30 min of cardio I burn over 860 cals less cause i'm not 313 pounds now. there is a limit to how fast and how long you can run in order to make up the missed cals.

Betty you have posted how you went from powerwalking to jogging to running you have changed up your workout and it keeps you from regainnig any weight.
Sarah same for you you run longer and faster then you did when you started.

that is the point the trainer is making you need longer harder or different workouts that your body hasn't trained for to keep your cal burning at the same level.

YA I understand that 2BIG for sure, I know as I get smaller I will burn less calories hence the increasing of milage and speed etc. I also lift weight do stip arobics and a dance tape I change it up all the time as well. I get bored one this is always consistant is my running and I feel it has made a huge difference in my legs and my fat mass. I understand what the lady is saying but, I also know where I ahve been and where I am now.

I know sarah but her point is valid running can mke you fatter if you only do the same run same speed same distance as you lose weight. As much as that toasts runners shorts it is true just as SI6 or BFL would too without any changes.

Yes that's VERY true that's why I don't do the same thing LOL. I actually used to workout like a bodybuilder and one thing I learned from doing that is to change it up all the time to increase gains and so I ahve brought that with me. Many don't understand this concept that's why it's important to make things harder as you get stronger and faster so that you don't get in a slump.
