  • Aerobic/ Anaerobic Exercise

I was wondering, what do you guys do, aerobic or anaerobic exercise? I know aerobic burns fat, but then they say anaerobic burns carbs and indirectly burns fat by increasing your metabolism. So, which do you do and which do you think is better?

I've been doing anaerobic and didn't even know it. I train on my elliptical for 30-60 minutes 5 days a week right now, and my heart rate stays around 155. It should be between 130-170. I am also OUT OF BREATH when I'm exercising.

BUt then, when you get into the higher numbers, isn't it more cardio? I am starting to get confused with all this info. I used to know what it all ment, but when you're ACTUALLY using the info for yourself..it slipped away! LOL

Thanks for reading another one of my crazy questions.....

    Re: Aerobic/ Anaerobic Exercise

Okay...I kept digging..and now I'm REALLY confused. Aerobic is less intensity over a longer period of time, where as anaerobic is more intensity over a shorter period of time. So my work outs seem like aerobic, but my heart rate doesn't stay at the lower end of my THR, and I'm always outta breath. So do you guys think maybe keep it at the 30-60 minutes...the longer the better...and lower my intensity so that I don't get the HR as high and I can breathe??

It's frustration to think that I have put so much effort and time and energy into exercising and I may have been doing to much! LOL I don't want to bulk up, I want to have long, lean muscles!

      Sweetie,

What you really want is to work out SLOWER, STRONGER, AND LONGER. Meaning, aerobic. Anaerobic exercise is really counterproductive to burning fat.

What is your maximum HR? You should be at 65-75% of that while working out. Yes, it will seem very slow to you at first, like you're not working hard, but you are. And you will be able to sustain that pace MUCH LONGER, which will result in maximum fat burning and endurance.

When in doubt, SLOW IT DOWN.

      Hope that helps!

My Max HR is 200. My Target HR is between 130 and 170. I stay at about 155...and I'm always having a hard time catching my breath. Slowing it down couldn't hurt I could probably go longer it I kept my HR at about 140...

        Thanks so much TTdriver

          Re: Aerobic/ Anaerobic Exercise

okay here is an easy way to understand the aerobic anerobic work the body has 3 fuels in muscles phophogens ( those are the ones with the P bonds like ATP and glycogen) they are the first fuel used and it is the actual fracture of the P bond that genergates the energy no O2 needed so it is called anerobic even though you are breathing while it goes on and O2 is availible for use.

those are used up in the first mimute of exerhertion like sprinting 100 yards for one of us or a 440 for a trained runner. they are gone and the body needs to come up with more of them to work so it has 2 ways to regenertate them

there is the breaking of the 6,5,4 carbon sugars which is also doen with out using oxygen. all of this fuel is gone in even a heavily trained athlete's muscles insde of 2 mins. We also have anerobic fatty acid fracturing energy release too. then you get to the 3 carbon carbs which can go either way anerobic to lactic acid or aerobically to Acytel Co A and the 2 carbon stage of the betaoxidation of fatty acids also Acetyl CoA. this is the aeobic burning.

now exercises that can use just the first part like sprinting or any all out maximum muscle contraction to fatigue will be anerobically fueled.

Endurance exercise at a slower speed like a miler or marathon runner will be aerobically fueled and some exercises are both like golf walking the cousres is aerobic but hitting the t-shot is anerorbic.

you can as you mentioned do anerobic cause you will get more cals burned for the day and the fuel has to come from somewhere but it is easier on the body to fat burn aerobically since you will be burning the fat while you workout.

Atkineers don't really have that trouble since we fat burn 24/7 so select what you like and go for it.
