No run or walk for me today (Tuesday).

Tomorrow, the training starts again. I plan to do 3 or 4 miles and build my miles up slowly. The great news .. all stiffness is gone and I feel 100% after just 1 day following the marathon! I can hardly believe I recovered that fast!

                WOOHOO!

Rich, you are burning up the pavement!! How long does it take you to do 6 or 7 miles? Just curious. Do you wear a heartrate monitor?

I did 3 miles today and I have a ways to go before the body has totally recovered from the marathon. So a couple more rest days for me. Hopefully I can do a good run on the trail come Saturday morning.

                          Hey family.

                          Runs this week.

                          Mon. 45 min.
                          Tues 55 min.

I am waiting for my new GPS to begin counting miles again. I want to be accurate as I add to train for future races. I avg. about a 10 min mile. I am pushing to do intervals in every run. I feel like my body needs to be pushed to get past this weight I have been at forever and adding miles is just not doing it on its own.--Please note I have been running for about 9 months DO NOT SPEED UP TOO Early in your training.-- As Miss Betty reminds us further slower burns the fat.

                            Betty,

Right now I'm doing low heart rate trainiing at a sloooowwww pace. I run all runs at a heart rate of 70% of max. For me that's around 130. I started this after reviewing my heart rate info for the marathon I ran. My heart rate was over 85% by the end of the first mile! I have proven that it is possible to run a marathon and not have a strong aerobic base. I have read 3 books on heart rate training and one suggests that the first 20 miles of a marathon should be run at or below 75% heart rate.

So, I keep all my runs at 70% with the idea that over time the heart gets more efficient and you will over time be able to run longer at that heart rate and also faster at the same heart rate. The books say that running consistently at heart rates over 85% won't build your aerobic (fat-burning) system, but instead works on your sugar-burning anaerobic system. Prior to doing this, all my runs were as fast as I could get them done and none of them were comfortable.

The books I've read are: Endurance Training by Phil Maffetone, Slow Burn by Stu Mittleman, and Heart Rate Training for the Complete Idiot by Parker.

                            Now, the short answer.
Running at 70% heart rate, I'm running about 13:30 minutes per mile.
When I started this, I was walking half the time, couldn't run for a half mile at that heart rate. Now, I can run 6 to 7 miles at that heart rate.

The best part is that I feel good during and after every run. It has allowed me to add mileage to my weekly schedule. Before I ran 20-25 miles a week. My current cycle of training weeks has me running 28-34 miles per week.

Sorry for the long answer. You know how excited us runners get talking about this kind of stuff.

                              Rich,

Thank you for that answer! I see you and I are definitely training the same way.

I ran the marathon at about a 13 minute mile, give or take, and my heart rate stayed within the 70-75% consistently. That's an amazing thing when ya think about it! I finished the 26.2 miles without feeling winded. Exhausted yes, but never winded. The only pain I had was in my feet!! Pretty good accomplishment for someone who has never been an athlete, and I attribute that to training with the heartrate monitor. I soooooooooooooooo believe in Polar!!!

At this point in my life, I am more interested in running LONGER than faster. Its amazing to me what the body can adapt to if trained correctly. Running slow is HARD WORK to learn, but definitely worth it in the long run (pardon the pun!)

                              WTG on your terrific accomplishments!
