Re: What/who Inspired You To Start Running?

BETTY AND SARAH for sure! I have always never considered myself a runner- but I want to. I judge my physical shape in how far I can run now. I think that is the best thing I can do to shape and tone my "overall". I am loving it more everyday... slowly but surely I am building up! I started runnin .15, then .25 , etc. Now I am up to 1.25 then I will walk like .10 and start joggin again. The hardest part for me was the breathing, my legs never used to get sore before I got out of breath, I can't say that anymore !!!!
ALSO, I am learnign shoes matter!!!! and I always need good ones!!!!- sidenote- do yalls feet/ankles/hips feel sore after changing shoes and running till they get broken in? or is it just me?
Caution I BITE! clicky clicky..its tricky rikki!

Aw, thanks Rikki!! You're doing fabulous! Great progress!

You are absolutely right about the SHOES! They are the most important piece of equipment for a runner .. !

No, I don't get pain in my feet with new shoes, although some folk do .. depends on your particular gait I suppose .. if you overpronate (arches turn in) when you run, then it would stand to reason that a new pair of shoes would take sometime to adjust to that .. but you shouldn't be "sore" .. curious .. what kind of running shoe do you have? Do you have a narrow foot or a high arch or any particular issue with your feet? The pain goes away after the shoe is worn for awhile??? If you have ankle pain, I'd be curious as to whether your shoes have enough cushioning?

well, I have two of the same kind, they are both nikes and they are the only ones at the stores around here that had high stability, and the higher of the cushioning, even thoguh it was just medium, and med width. My feet aren't wide but I do have a high arch.. any suggestions?
I think they are called dual ds? maybe? I got them at JC PEnneys here.... I bet I can find them on line too... I got the second pari because the first ones did well for a while after the initial soreness.... so I thought they would be ok...

Re: What/who Inspired You To Start Running?

When I was younger, I always played sports - field hockey, basketball and softball. I was always active so never really had to worry about my weight and so forth. When I got older and wanted to stay in shape, I began running. Over the years I have continued to run but sometimes it gets put on the back burner. I agree with Betty that I have heard from many people about running "you either love it or you hate it!" The first mile is always the hardest one - your mind tries to talk you out of running and your body isn't warmed up enough and starts yelling at you to stop. After the first mile, you just keep going. Running makes you feel almost euphoric - well you get that feeling after you are done. Hard to explain to people who do not run. It is a great source of exercise to help shed the lbs. quickly and to help you get your body into half way decent shape for bathing suit weather! It also helps to read all the posts on this board from people who swore they could never run and then they did. The results are amazing!

I am glad I could inspire being a Big runner it was hard to start but, now that I lost weight I find it's awesome and I feel empowered when I run like my body and soul is driven it's an amazing feeling.

I am thinking of Training for a triathalon they have one Next year man that would be awesome. I wanna do a full marathon next year but, If I could train to do a triathalon too that would be sooo awesome. never thought of doing it but, I think it would be awesome.

Re: What/who Inspired You To Start Running?

Maizie, I totally agree with you that the first mile is the hardest. Even after running for over 2 years, that is *still* the case with me. No matter how much I look forward to running, I struggle until that first mile is finished. After that, I could keep going and going and going!! FUNNY!

Oh, and Sarah, count me in as a dork too .. I have a bazillion pair of 300+mile-New Balance 1221s in the closet ..

Sorry, Rikki, didn't mean to leave you hanging ...

I have very bony feet, so Nike is OUT for me .. not enough cushioning !! My own experience, however ...

When I started running SERIOUSLY, I tried a bazillion different shoes, from Asics, Adidas, Nike, Saucony, you name it .. I ended up with New Balance because for me, they gave the most cushion and stability. I started with the 991s and wore those for several years, but then last year, I switched to the 1221s because they added Abzorb in the heel and forefoot which really felt great on my foot. New Balance offers a narrower width too, so that was another plus. I also liked the extra "toe room" because I tend to have toenail issues during my longer runs. TIP: always buy running shoes at least a full size longer than your street shoes because your feet actually LENGTHEN out as you run distance and that will help keep your toenails intact...(take it from one who learned that the hard way after losing both big toenails from wearing too short of shoes)... Other than the toenail issue, I've never had ANY PAIN from my New Balance shoes.

                    These are my shoes:

So my advice would be to try several different brands .. if you can, get them from store that will give you a "trial period" .. most running stores will let you try them for a week or two and return them if you aren't happy ..

CUSHIONING AND STABILITY ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FOR RUNNERS TO PROTECT THE KNEES, ANKLES & HIPS!

And once you find a shoe you love, check online for the best price. I get mine at www.onlineshoes.com and they offer free shipping and no tax! Even have sales! I've been very happy with them.

Oh and also .. a word about socks .. invest in ones that are seamless and are made with COOL MAX dry weave .. your feet will love you for it. COOL MAX rocks!

                    Hope that helps!

I was thinking that I would like to do a triathlon too. I would do really well with the biking and swimming part but the running part still needs a lot of work. So I guess I'm going to have to improve on my running first.

I tried some new balance on at the store and I don't think they fit my feet well, but I definitely need to try another kind sometime, I am goign to give these another week because this is what ahppened when I started to jog in teh first place, although my hips aren't sore this time just my knees and ankles, I think I may need to just break them in... thanks for the link to the shoe store! I will have to check them out!!!

wow wanna, that'd be cool! let us know how that works out!
i agree too about the first mile. It's like i want to run, i think about doing it, after i'm done i feel good, but getting started ugh. Kind of like what someone said earlier, my body and mind go into denial, it's telling me i've never been a runner before, i hated it during highschool, why am i doing it now?? but then i start and its actually not that bad, LOL!
Sarah and betty you're both the greatest .
Oh and course i have to give a shout for my hubby who is burning up the tracks too!

For those of you with tons of shoes hanging around, you may want to check out your local running store. For example, Running Free (just north of Toronto) takes donations of used running shoes. If they're in not bad shape, they'll put in new insoles and send them to third world countries to be used. If they're in bad shape, the rubber is removed and used to create the material for outdoor running tracks in Canada and abroad. Kinda cool I thought.

OH wow I don't have a Place like that it would be a wonderful Idea though I would do that if there was somewhere here that would take them.

YA Wanna that's aweosme I think I would be ok on the Biking and the running but, the swimming OMG I ahven't in sooo long I would probably sink to the bottom. I think I would like this to be my next goal though that would be aweosme. I have to build up my but cause riding hurt, I broke my tailbone almost 3 years ago and it still bothers me to sit. EEEK.
