  • Need back strengthening exercises!

Would some of you experts please help me out? Every time I start an exercise program, it always puts such a strain on my back that the pain usually makes me abandon all efforts. My mom tells me that it's because of poor abdominal muscle tone. I'm sure. Can anyone hook me up with a low impact regimen that would target just the muscles in the back? I really feel that if I can conquer this obstacle, that I can move on with a more effective routine. Thanks!

    Re: Need back strengthening exercises!

Lie on the floor on your front. Place your hands behind your head and then lift your head up and your legs up as high as you can manage at the same time.

You will feel this at the base of your spine and is a great excercise.

I am afraid that is the only back one I know. But its a start Let me know how you get on.

      Re: Need back strengthening exercises!

Thanks, Richt. I just tried a few reps and I discovered two things...

      1. My legs are really heavy
      2. My carpet could use a steam cleaning

I will take it easy at first and see how my back handles the strain. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. My back problem has been my diet/exercise nemises for a really long time. Back pain = self pity/comfort food. I'm very determined to succeed this time!
      Thanks again!

Thanks, Maschke. I don't have a resistance ball, but I printed the diagrams that you sent and they are very helpful. Hope to be 'normal' again soon!

I second the motion that Sarah suggested .. the stability ball is AWESOME and it has helped me strengthen my core muscles!! You can do all sorts of great back and ab workouts with it. A GREAT INVESTMENT AND A MUST HAVE!

                  Re: Need back strengthening exercises!

Does anyone have a spare Stability ball or know a good place to find one at low cost? Seems like the next thing for me to try.
Maybe could work at the PC sitting on it instead of this office chair.
My back has been troubling me between the shoulder blades for 3 months day and night, and I'm sure it must be hindering my enthusiasm to exercise. Propbably from the chair.

                    Re: Need back strengthening exercises!

Most discount stores sell them (Walmart, etc), but you can also find them at Sports Authority. They aren't expensive, but they are worth every cent!

                    Hope it helps your back!

YA at Walmart they are cheap anywhere elese ya go they are like 20 bucks up But, ya know the one I Got for 8 dollars has lasted 16 months of hevey duty Use and that's even when I was my heaviest bouncing on the bugger for leg workouts HE HE

Oh and sitting on the Ball instead of the chair is sooo great for your back and good for strengthening the core muscles and stability muscles While you are Posting you can Bounce on it or do some crunches.

Is it best to get a ball with a handle? Just looked on Ebay and there's a variety but some don't look like they have one, and are cheaper. Also, the sizes vary.

I love my stability ball! You can do so much with it!

I have a bad back and it feels so good to lay back on it and stretch. I got mine at Target for 14.99 then another for my husband for 10 at Sams Club.
