Thanks, Rich for starting the thread. My bad.

This has *NOT* been my week. First my mother's untimely death. Then being rearended at 55 mph while stopped at a traffic light.

    Ugh.

Re: Cool Running for May 14th to May 20th

I've had a groin injury so I couldn't do my Tuesday run. (Groin was sore after my Saturday run, and then at dance class on Sunday, I pulled it doing fast lindy hop swivels. damn damn damn). I'm feeling much better today (Wednesday), so I'm doing a 2 hour dance class tonight (latin: merenge and cha-cha) and I plan to do a run tomorrow... I'm all the way up in Maine, and it's only been 70-75 on the hot days and my run/walk training sessions are only about 1.5 hours but I've gotten a pretty prominent sunburn on my nose and on my arms (run in tanktop). Also, I find that if I don't drink enough water before the run, my hands swell up... I'm wondering if that's normal.

So I only got 2 sessions in the first week, but injuries happen, right? I've been beating myself up ever since I got the injury Sunday.

Do you think my groin will build strength so I don't have issues with this anymore? Because it's so painful to pull and I really don't want this to happen again... I was shown some good stretches to do before running by a friend of mine... hope everyone's runs are going well.
No stats. Not weighing anymore ever. Will post "before and after" pictures when I want to. The end.

            Vigilance, not perfection.

OH man Groin Injuries really suck I'm sorry you Hurt yourself. As your weight comes of it will be less likely to pull, also you can do some strength trining exercises for your Groin to strengthen the muscles in that Area. I have only pulled it 1 time and it really hurt so I really feel for you but, I ahve not had any Problems since so I really hope that's the way it goes for you.

I get really bad swelling in my hands as well I think it's normal every runner I talk to gets this as well and says it's normal. I hate it but, hey I know my heart is working HE HE.

ANy last minute tips for the first timer?????
                Yes.

Start toward the back of the pack and keep track of how many people you pass up! That's the fun of it! HONEST!

Stop at every drink station they have on the route. Don't try and skip one .. you need the fluids.

Have a high fat/high protein meal 2 hours before the start. Don't eat high fiber veggies the night before.

Go to the potty! Hopefully they'll have plenty of portapottys .. at my Minnie marathon they were ridiculously short of them! 20 toilets for 2000 runners.

Take some immodium AD that morning.

Take 2 ibuprofen before the race; you'll thank me later for that suggestion.

If the race begins before dawn, consider using bug spray .. I don't know about Canada this time of year, but here right now the mosquitoes will carry you off before sunup.

Most of all, enjoy the competition .. remember, you paid to do this!

BE SURE YOU POST YOUR RESULTS HERE SOON AS YOU CAN, CUZ I'M SO PSYCHED FOR YOU, I CAN'T WAIT!

Cuz girl, the LAST thing you want to happen is to be hit with diarrhea from the fibrous veggies and/or the jitters that you'll have before the gun goes off!!

I am SOLD on my pre-race dinner that has worked perfect for me for the half marathon and the full marathon: Chili's mushroom jack fajitas minus the tortillas. No tummy upset whatsoever the next morning.

                            Friday: 18 miles

Yup, that's right. Got home super stressed from work. Rather than eat (my old way to deal with stress), laced up the shoes with 4 fuel belt bottles filled up and set out to run. The temps were in the 50s and overcast. Ran about 8 miles and the sun came out. The stress went away. Ran through the park and refilled my water bottles and kept running. Headed home just in time before darkness fell.

Felt great. Even today still feel great. The skin on my toes are sore? Strange. I do wear the "blister proof" Wright socks too. Great socks if you've never ran in them.

Will scale back this weekends runs to adjust for the unscheduled "big run".

5 months out from my marathon and I'm already hitting 18 milers!!! I am so gonna dominate this marathon.

Sorry for the exuberance. I am geeked up this morning. The satisfaction from running that far is something I think only a "runner" can relate to.

Rich, fantastic job! You hit the nail on the head about how running eliminates stress. It just TOTALLY NEUTRALIZES IT. I can come home from work and be like and before I can even stop to debate the idea, I grab my running shoes and get going. Within 5-6 miles, the stress lifts and I feel great! Even if I come home with a headache .. a few intense miles and my headache goes away!

Yes, I have callouses BIG TIME on the ends of my toes. I'm thinking that's probably what you're talking about with the skin on your toes. Its pretty gruesome, but hey, I just count it among my "battle scars" of running. I always wear blister-proof socks too, but I still get the callouses. They don't hurt, but they certainly aren't pretty!

Never apologize for being stoked after a run! We can all relate to that feeling!!

                              GREAT JOB!
