  • Cool Running for the week of July 30, 2006

Amazing as it is, there is just one more day left in July ... where has this summer gone? Like alot of you, I am SICK TO DEATH of the hot weather and now, here it is, nearly August, the hottest month of all for us Floridians ... Lawd, help me make it!!! Where are those COLD days of January when I griped about having to run with gloves on in the early morning hours???

Well anyway .. Sunday's run was 10.3 miles. Typically my day off, but since I bombed yesterday's LSD run, I had some serious making up to do. Finished in 2 hours and then bowled 4 games in the afternoon. A good physical day!

Planning an early morning run for Monday of 6.3 miles before work.

Hi Betty, I have a quick running question for you...is there a temp. where you draw the line on whether or not you run? Our temps have been pretty high lately, and with humidity are supposed to be well over 100 this week, i'm just wondering when it's actually dangerous to run? I do make sure I get alot of water, and i try to go to the boardwalk and run at the lakeshore where it's a bit cooler (and the dog can go for a swim).

I only run 3 miles at a time, not long distance or anything... and don't want to cancel my run's because of weather if i do'nt need to. Just curious living in fla. what you do?

I have a 5 mile road race on Wednesday night, so will not be running until then, to let my legs get a "raring to go" feel.

I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

Sunday 8 miles. I was so proud of myself since that is the farthest I have run in years! Tonight I hope to do 4 miles or so.

            Hi Sadie!!

To date, I haven't cancelled a run due to the heat ...

That said, there are common sense rules to follow if you're planning to run in excessive temperatures:

            1. HYDRATION ... be sure you are adequately hydrated before you start. I also use a packet of ELECTROMIX in a 20 oz bottle of water that adds electrolytes. I love the stuff.

            2. CONDITIONING. For me, running in the heat is doable because I've built up to it SLOWLY ... its hot here from May to October .. so in the transition months of March and April, I gradually increase my miles to build stamina for the dog months when its atrociously humid.

            3. RUN WHEN ITS A LITTLE COOLER. I try to run either early in the day (yes, the humidity is stifling, but the heat is less...) or in the early evening (before the skeeters take over!)

If you are well hydrated and well conditioned, you listen to your body, keep tabs on your heartrate to make sure you're not overdoing it, then I think running in the heat is fine. Just use common sense.

            HTH!

Yup that does help thanks Betty! My biggest concern right now is a smog alert, and i live fairly close to downtown. But I haven't had breathng issues so I'm sure i'm fine. Next week i'll be at the cottage which is 150 mile north of here and away from the smog and crap...so I'll have no excuse

4 miles last night in the hot humidity! I am hoping all this sweating is helping me lose the last few pounds I need to.... Wishful thinking I guess....

Thanks Betty - I hope so! Thanks for your support.

I ran a little over 4 miles last night. Wasn't my fastest run but I still got out there in the heat and did it. Whew!

Good luck tonight Rich with your 5 mile run. Let us know how you do!

Thanks Lisa. There will be thread for you to read about tomorrow when you log on.

I have changed my race goals now. They used to be - running the whole way and not coming last and beating a specific time.

Now, my new race goal is not to be the last male of 33 y/o or younger.
