  • Praise and a vent about my latest race.

I did the Conkwell Killer yesterday, this is a 8.3 mile race cross country and road. Really well organised and there was a samba band playing to encourage people to keep going. The marshalls were great and so supportive. The "killer" bit came in at the 5 mile mark. It was a climb up a muddy / rocky slope which no one could run. Even the winner could only manage to power walk up it. It was quite literally a "killer".

My only vent was the "goody bag" at the end of the race. We paid £10 to enter (roughly US$19). WHich is quite expensive for a 8 mile race. Anyway, on the entry form it said we would get a goody bag. It didnt say what would be in there, but when I received mine, it had a 500ml bottle of water and a packet of cheese flavoured crisps (chips). and then a couple of advertising leaflets. (hardly £10 worth). And not exactly healthy either. The water was ok but I ended up giving the crisps to someone else.

Race went ok, I finished in front of about 7 people which is always a goal of mine, (to not be last and beat atleast one other male). I finished in 1:28:50 - which is quite a slow time, but that major hill was always going to mean it was a slow one.

Rich, I hear ya on the goodie bags .. they are seldom "low carb friendly", although my last midnight 10k included Advantage Carb Control bars, which surprised me.

Great job on the run! That will be a good base for your halfer! Any plans to do a LSD run of 12-13 before the big day?

Rich, you did great! Congratulations! Sorry the goodie bag sucked! Did you at least drink the water after? What was the weather for the race like? I would say you did a great job considering the hill!

I have another 5 mile race next sunday, then a 10k the following weekend.

I will aim to get another 10 mile training run in before the half.

Oh yes Jas, I drank the water. lol.

The weather was ok, a bit of rain but not much. It had rained hard before hand, so that hill was even more treachorous. But still fun.

Congratulations. I've been thinking about that race since you told us and sending you positive vibes across the river. You are awesome to do a killer race like that. I remember my husband did one called a killer that was all uphill when he was military. He was exhausted when he finished, but he is a good runner.

As for the goodie bag....well, you probably made some carb-crazed persons day by giving it away to them. Another test that you've been put through and you came out with flying colors. Thanks for updating on the race!!!

rich $19 for a 5K here is about right most are $15 if you preregister and $25 on race day. Unless it is a fundraiser run and then entry fees can be up ro $100. Usually if you preregister you get a Tshirt. did you get one?

No didnt get a t-shirt. Infact rarely do. Usually just get a medal or some other kind of momento. I have had 2 t-shirts from my races this year, but that is out of the 8 I have done so far. I quite like getting the t-shirts as they do have a use. Its the little tin medals that I can't be bothered with as the ones I have had so far this year havent even had the name of the race engraved on it.
