  • What burns fat the best

    Hi everyone. I'm new to Atkins and I'm just wondering what types of exercise burn fat the best. I don't really want to start weights to tone muscle yet because I heard that muscle weighs more that fat and I don't want the scale to mislead me. I just want all this stubborn fat to go away. I have lost 9 pounds so far and would like to start some type of regimen but don't know how to start. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

    IMO, the best way to burn fat is with consistent cardiovascular exercise, i.e. walking, jogging, elliptical, whatever gets your heart rate up for a minimum of 30 (optimally 60) minutes a day.

      I have to agree with Betty. The best way I found to start was to start with an easy cardio exercise, like walking for 30-60 minutes 3-5 days a week. Then gradually build up to a regular heavier cardio exercise over a period time e.g. walk 3 days, walk-jog 2 days then the next week walk 2 days, walk-jog 3 days.

      Have a look a some of the exercise challenges on this forum, joining some of these challenges is what started me exercising regularily again.

        I agree with Rosecat, there are so many challenges going on in the excercise challenge forum that there is something for everyone.

        I hope you find one that suits you.

          Please don't shun weight training because you're afraid of it making you bigger. I agree that you should start slow with some walking, but I think you should also lift some light weights.

          And just to clear up a common misconception - muscle does not weigh more than fat! 1 pound of muscle = 1 pound of fat. But the fat takes up way more space. You might not notice the replacement of fat with muscle on the scale, but you'll definitely notice it when you take measurements and in your clothes.

          And muscle is more metabolically active than fat, so the more muscle you have, the more calories you'll burn.

          So start with some walking and it a few weeks, do some light weight training and progress from there.

            Thank you for clarifying that TOTAL MISCONCEPTION, Ralynda!! That's one of my pet peeves when folks say muscle weighs more than fat !!

              You can even start out with body resistance type exercises, like squats and lunges, wall pushes and so on. That combined with the cardio will definitely benefit you.

                id say sports. 30 mins of basketball is 100x harder than 30 mins on an elliptical

                      actually any long at the lower end of your heart rate range workout will burn fat for fuel.

                      that being said High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is an excellent fat burning workout that alternates working out at your highest intensity for a minute ( you only want to do it a short burst so it clears all the glucose from your muscles and they send out the I NEED FUEL signals which reves up the fat burning system to deploy more fats to the blood stream for fueling but not long enough to send the signals that cause the body sugar stores to be released) then you do 1-5 min depending on your fitness level at the bottom of your heart range to recover your oxygen levels so you are doing aerobic fuel burning which uses lots of fatty acids and shuts down the signals shouting WE NEED MORE FUEL from your muscles. then you jack it back up again for the 1 min and keep alternating until your workout is finished.
