    Re: Another half marathon PB

Brats your speed is a lot quicker than me. It takes me about 85 minutes to run 9 miles.

To answer your other question, I actually have an Ipod shuffle, which clips to my shorts. This one here -

I didnt used to run with music, but i bought one of these about 6 months ago and its been a god send! I clip it to my shorts and away I go!

But the l;ast pair of running shoes I bought were a size 14, and I have not had a single blister nor have I lost a nail since (prior I had lost the same one twice). I lace them tight but have plenty of room in the toe box.

      Just a thought.

Oh, and great job on the PB. I still have yet to run a halfer (doh!).
Jim, I over pronate, which I believe is the reason for my blisters, they are only ever on the inside of my feet. Thanks for the though, but my shoes are the perfect size.

I started getting blisters right behind the ball of my right foot, and the new sock and new shoes fixed it and haven't got as new one since. For me, a blister is a buy signal for new shoes.

            Brats4,

Every race I've ever run a ton of people wear mp3 players, I've never heard of a rule against it. I personally don't run with one because I want to hear the cars (already got hit once). I would love to run with on but I don't, I actually don't even own one.

              Re: Another half marathon PB

I am not sure if this is what Brats is talking about, but some people frown about people running with mp3's, some people think that without them you can run quicker. As if you arent being weighted down with anything unnecessarily.

Is that what you meant Brats? or do I have the wrong idea?

Really, my DH said "no headphones". I may have to look into that cause it would be an experience. A goal if nothing else

Personally I could *not* run without my mp3. Yeah, the races I enter say not to wear them, but I've yet to be told "take it off". I believe they tell you not to wear them just to protect themselves from possible lawsuits if you can't hear announcements, etc, during the race. Whatever, but I cannot/will not run without my music. I run faster, better, stronger and longer if I'm listening to music.

During my Disney marathon, I listened to all my Disney "happiest celebration on earth" music CDs. Loved it. What's better than running through Cinderella Castle listening to "Its A Small World After All"...............

                    Re: Another half marathon PB

The problem is with me Rich is the time isn't that great when its not consistent. It is mostly because I will have times when I push my limits and then not run for days cause of kids, house, life etc. Then I stupidly will go out and run 3 miles say feels okay and do 8 the next day. Very foolish but still get that through my head. LOL.

I just rode my bike to the library to pick up an Atkins book and a running book. Hopefully, it will mean I get both right this time. I think I need to concentrate more on getting a solid routine of small milage than I do increasing milage just to feel like I did something amazing.

I commend all of you who have run marathons (and half) I really don't know if I'd have the fortitude to train like that and carry out the run.

That’s amazing! Look at your pictures, what a development.

Do you have any tips for me concerning preparation, as I will run my first half marathon in May this year. It is called the Göteborgs varv (Gothenburg) and my goal is to get to the finish. The next goal will be to run it five years in a row to get their shirt ”Made it five times” (something like that).

A dream of mine is to travel to the States and run a marathon there. We will see. I am still young… let’s start with the first one in May!

Tips for running and completing a half marathon -

Start on the treadmill, running for as long as you can physically manage. Then each time you go to the gym or wherever you run try to increase your distance. Thats pretty much all I can say. When you feel confident, start running outdoors. Between now and May doesnt really give you that long to prepare, a little over 5 weeks. What sort of distance can you run now?

                          I am running 10 km ~ 6,2 miles in about 75 minutes - outdoor.

I started training in January, both, outdoors and in the gym. Unfortunately I broke my left toe while training martial arts and couldn't run at all for about 4 weeks. During that time I trained on the stepper (right word?) instead, as you don't roll your foot that much on this one.

But last weekend I tried to run for the first time again and - it worked!

stargirl, I did the broke toe thing too. However, mine was banging my little toe on my daughters leg as I tripped over her. LOL. Not exactly a story with much personal glory. I couldn't believe how much it hurt though. I think it had me out of the loop for a few weeks.

I'm so happy to hear the Mp3 thing isn't a public lashing if caught thing. I've even seen it listed as a nono on some charity runs. Thus, my anxiety over attempting one. I am now thinking maybe it would be a super goal to set. Start small with a 5k and push forward a bit more.

I think if nothing else it would give me a great sense of "why I am doing this". I go a really great book last night on running. It covers all the ins and outs, stretches, exercises...an abundance of info. I have decided to stop trying to do this on the fly and put some method to the madness.

                              Hi Brats4!

Oh yeah, it is so tough to break your toe by doing martial arts… lol – it is as silly as everything else... guess I have to kick more focused or to buy some training shoes…

Was it you writing about the mp3 while running? Or are you just commenting it? I think it wasn’t you, was it? Actually here in Europe we find it quite amusing that you have all this sewing stuff going on and seeing the results of it. It must drive every reasonable adult crazy.

Anyhow, I don’t know a marathon in Europe where it is forbidden to wear headphones while running. Personally I love listen to music while running. Unlike the one that was writing about it, I love to have fast electronic music on it to get me going.

Actually there are tons of sites on the net and it is definitely worth it to be more serious about it. But forget about the nutrition tips - they tend to be no Atkins...

                              Have a nice day!

Yes, here most of the sites I've seen for runs suggest/require no Mp3/headphones etc. Which has always detered me from trying one. I can't imagine running without music. I think it helps set a pace, not to mention motivation.

I am finding it amusing how much time I put into running shoe shopping. My husband can't help but laugh about it. When we met I tossed on my little white KEDS or bobo type shoes and was great with it. Wonder why exercising seemed tough? Duh. Anyway, it would drive him nuts. He hates cheap shoes. So for him my taking up running served an additional plus other than skinny $ex....decent footwear. LOL
