  • Triathlon Dreams, Tips, and Training

6 weeks ago I was invited to do a triathlon with a friend. I laughed and thought she was absolutely crazy!!!! But I went home and started thinking about it. I biked and jogged all the time....I biked some times 15 to 25 miles. I ran a 10k this summer. All I would have to do is get in the water and crank out some laps....Ok, "I'm in"...I signed up!
It was a 6 week training journey with the race being held in the metro Atlanta area on Sept 8th. Over those 6 weeks I have had weed through a ton of training and equipment choices. I've gathered a basic working knowledge of the event and I wanted to share the experience, and the things I've learned.

First off, I did complete the triathlon. I LOVED IT
Secondly I have signed up for a second one on Oct 8th--- I CANT WAIT!
Third, IT'S TOO LATE IN THE YR. TO TRY AND DO ONE BEFORE WINTER, if you are considering this. TRAIN FOR LATE SPRING 08.

Today's thread I will share my experience of last Saturday.

Basically I did not exercise at all on the Friday before the race. I ate low carb, and enjoyed a piece of chicken breast and steamed broccoli the night before.
I tried to get to sleep early, but of course I could not sleep well. The gates opened for "sign in" registration at 5:30 the next morning, so we left our house at 4:30. I woke a 4am, had a cup of coffee and got dressed in my bathing suit and jog bra underneath it.
At 5:30 (2 hrs before the race, I ate a Lara Bar) and sipped on water.
Arrived at registration where I received a goody bag, a number for my helmet, a racing chip, which is an electrode with a velcro strap that was to go around my left ankle. A number for my bike and I went to body marking, they wrote my number on both upper arms and my age on my lower right calf. We then unpacked the bikes, and Keith pumped up all the tires, and I gathered my bag, double checking things. We went to the transition area, and only I was allowed to go in. I "racked my bike" where my race number was. I spread out a striped towel (one I could easily recognize, there were 1,000 entrants to this race). I placed all my things out on the towel and went off to the bathroom.
We slowly formed in our age group, or number range. I wore my tank suit and a pair of trishorts over that and my goggles. Swam my swim, got out, ran to my bike, put on a bike HELMET, shirt, socks, and bikeshoes and trotted out to the place they alllow you to get on your bike. Had a great bike ride, returned, trotted the bike back to my rack site, took off the bike shirt and shoes and put on running shoes and headed back out the direction they pointed me in. Ran the run....Finished the race 1 hour and 45 mins after starting. Had a great great experience.

Tomorrow I will talk about the No. 1 thing to do in training!!!!

Can't wait to hear about the number 1 traiing tip. My friend recently told me about a non-competitive woman's triathalon in the spring. She is losing a lot of weight through weight loss surgery and I am hoping to here. We figured it would be a great way to show our progress. I haven't rode a bike in a while. I can swim, but haven't swam laps ina while either. I figure the one thing that will hold me back will be the run. I never ran. I am working on the couch to 5k. I am hoping to be able to finish the cycles of the c25k by the end of January. At the beginning of the new year, I will probably join the Y so I can work on swimming and biking.

I am not intriguted by the triathelon, probably because I prefer to breast stroke when I swim, and I'm not big on biking.

However, I do think I'd like to try for a marathon sometime next year. But only because Jess keeps inspiring me to do more than I already do..........<grin>
      Start date: 7/29/2007

      Scale: SW:235 CW:193
      GW:150

Tape Measure: I've lost 42.5 inches as of 3/15/2008

      Mini goals:

Hey Funkychicken....you are considering a triathlon? Very cool....
Now is a great time of year to get out on the bike, before it gets too cold to do so.
Swimming can always be done at the Y or local indoor pools, but "real biking" on the road, neighbrohood or parks is very important....Do you have a bike, can a friend let you borrow one...My suggestion is a mountain bike type bike, with smooth tires...there are alot of "cross trainer bikes and hybrids out there...these bikes are a cross between mountain bike and road bike, bike they ride in the Tour De France type cycling. Most all cross trainers and hybrids have upright handle bars...
If you are looking to purchase a bike, I would definately go for a cross trainer or hybrid....and I would try to borrow one, if you've never done alot of biking...
I will take pictures of my bikes and post the difference here...

Hey Jess, i still have not gotten motivated to run yet, still biking...it's just so hot here, i can't stand the humidity. so, maybe i'll start running in the fall and get used to running before it gets hot again. reading this is very motivating, thanks.

            As Promised a few pictures,
the first one is my road bike, it is meant to be ridden fast and on the road. The tires are skinny, and the handbars are designed so that I tuck down and become more aerodynamic. Mine have Aero bars added so I can really get down and go fast, of course, it won't go fast all by itself! I used this bike in the Triathlon and I do my mileage workouts on it, out on the street or on the trainer, which it is mounted to.

This next picture is a great example of a cross trainer, or hybrid. It has skinny tired, but not as skinny as the road bike, and it's meant to be ridden causally or faster...there is a shock absorber up front, so I can go off road (something my husband insisted on...ask me how many times I've riden off road???) I take this bike to the park all the time, for casual workouts where I am seeking to do relaxed riding.

Thanks for the biking advice. I haven't biked in about 5 years, but did it all the time growing up. I tried doing a search for a cross trainer bike, but wasn't coming up with anything.

Is the hybrid much different to ride than a street or mountain bike?

              Thanks for the advice!

Re: Triathlon Dreams, Tips, and Training

The hybrid allows you to move fast, but with a soften ride...A road bike is stiff and hard and you are leaning over much more...
http://www.rei.com/product/744791 here is a picture of a bike that is more of a hybrid or cross trainer. We deal with REI alot, and this is a fair price for that bike...I got mine at the end of the yr close out sale, like now or next month....you want that thinner smooth tire more than anything...if mileage is the goal, which IS THE GOAL in triathlon....

Re: Triathlon Dreams, Tips, and Training

I was looking into bike shops near me. There is one I will try to stop at today that is going out of business. Their site says that everything TREK is 50% off..hope they have some bikes. I'm actually starting to get excited for expanding my triathalon training! YAY! I am hoping they will know what the hybrid type bike is. I was looking at the TREK website..I didn't see hybrid bikes. Do I just base it on appearance? Thanks for all your help!

Jess-In your first bike picture, the back tire is in a stand..what is that for?

that is called a "Trainer" and basically, the back wheel rolls on it, and you can ride the bike inside...We've had them for yrs...that one was about 150.00 It allows you to ride your bike inside...I keep it in the garage, and it is something that I will train on all winter when I bike.

50%off Trek, that would be something not to miss, if there are any bikes left...

Re: Triathlon Dreams, Tips, and Training

Alright the number one training tip most definately is appropriate REST. It can't be said enough, you over train, and you will be drained! Resting is the key to success!
I rested every other day, for the first time all year long. Day one, you hit the pool, swim. Rest the next day if you really over did it...Day 3 Bike, work up to 10mi, next day, rest if you are fatigued, day 5 run...next day, rest if need be or head back to the pool....do this for a few weeks...
I would work out so hard, in the beginning I had to really take a breather for a couple of hours...and I always made sure to go to bed, so I got 8 hours.
At any point I was fatigued, you will know this in a few ways....You can take your pulse first thing in the morning, for a few days before you training and get a baseline. Then do it every day, and should you noticed an increase, take a day off.
I feel it in my legs when I go up the stairs, if I am winded, or there is a burn in my thighs...I know I am pushing it....I might work out, but it will be swim...
Swim, Swim, Swim that's my next topic!

Unfortunatly I went to the bike store and they were already out of business..bummer. I did stop by another place and the owner use to do triathalons all over the country. He showed me the hybrids, but recommended the road bikes for more speed/aerodynamics. Thoughts?

Re: Triathlon Dreams, Tips, and Training

Really, as far as the bike goes, you can use anything you feel the most comfortable on. Unless you are actually going to compete in the triathlon to win it, riding a more comfortable and affordable hybrid may be the way to go. I know lots of people who start out with their old mountain bike. One of the world's best triathetes, Tom Holland, started doing Olympic level tri's on a rented bike with a rented helmet! I say go with whatever you can afford. The hybrids are cheaper--less that $700, whereas the road bikes usually run between $700-$3000 (depending on brand and components, blah, blah, blah).

I have a friend that I train with who does NOT like the forward position of road bikes. She prefers to sit more upright, so she likes the hybrids better. While, I DO like the forward position and the stiff quality of a road bike. If you go to a tri, you will see all kinds of bikes, but it mostly comes down to who the better athlete is!

Obviously I have both kinds of bike. I bought my road bike before I ever heard the word triathlon, because biking is a non weight baring sport, and I need to balance that against the running to give my hips a break! I have always loved to ride, but have never owned a road bike....got one after my Mom died as a treat to myself and boy did I ride and ride and ride....
My road bike was an entry level Trek, 700.00. I put a entry level pair of aero bars on it, and entry level pedals. I am good with all that...Nothing else needed since my goal is to participate.
