Re: Triathlon Dreams, Tips, and Training

Hello all! I took a week off from exercise last week. My body and mind were in a state of much needed rest. I think sometimes you just have to rest in order to move forward and that is where I was at. I was no longer increasing in endurance or distance and just wearing myself out. I think all is back to normal this week. CD talked me into going down to the gym yesterday morning and we just lifted weights for about 70 minutes. This morning will be cardio, not sure if I am going to run or what but I have a staff meeting at 8 so whatever it is, it will be short since I don't get off work until 7 am.

Funky, you would be establishing a routine that you can grow with. What I meant by flexibility is, you go when you can, working as you go. If you miss a day because of your schedule, it will be fine, you are working towards regular exercise, in 3 sports. Alternating them as you go. For me, I swam 1/2 a mile last night, this morning I will bike 5mi then run 3mi (a brick workout) Tomorrow I might bike 13. Friday I'll swim in the morning and bike in the evening with friends. Saturday I take a group on a walk-jog, followed by a bike. Followed by something later in the day... Sunday we go back to open water swim, I'll save myself for that big deal. Monday rest and then taper during the week for the race.

Good morning triantlete wanna be's. I am stiff all over. Stiff from swimming Tues nite. Stiff from a 11mi bike and a bad 2mi run. I was tired all day long, it took a ton out of me. I am thinking of resting today. Working in the yard and just allowing my body to chill.
I have not felt particularly motivated this week...Today will be a refreshing break! There is great value in a rest day. Resting the body, the mind and restoring strength!

For those of you following our big "training for a tri"...my husband has spent this last month in the pool over coming a life-long fear of water and last night, while I yelled, "keep going, give me more"...He swam 16 laps the entire length of his swim leg of the triathlon which is next Sunday. He was sooooo excited, exhausted and triumphant!

YAY for hubby!! He has truely overcome the last hurdle on his way to triathon freedom! He just needs to remember, he only has to go 1/2 way, there is no shame in resting on the bouy at the 1/2 way mark if he needs it!! Just kidding! He is going to do great! How is the open water swim going? Is he doing okay with that?

I'm still just plugging along. Think I'll run on our bike trail this morning, it's about 2.5 miles from my house to the airport and back. So that will be a nice little jaunt. I'm still sore from my weight workout the other day. I changed some exercises and it really paid off. I'm usually not very sore at all, but I'm hoping the new muscles I'm building will help with the swim.

Re: Triathlon Dreams, Tips, and Training

Well today, (Sunday) has been a big day of working out....It's kinda the last big day of training, now I begin to taper down and not so hard at anything...
I biked 30minutes this morning before 8....then we met a friend up at the lake for another "open water swim"...which is really good....I went across the cove and back, 4 times....a huge workout...Came home (Keith may pull out of the race and that created some adverse energy within me) off I went on a run...that was sponatenous, so I could get along with everyone in the house....(Keith got in the lake and then got out, freaked!)...
My kashi cereal caught up with me this week...Got a "bump" and the tri top would not cover it all, or should I say, just a sliver of tummy was showing....
I have not trained real hard this week, so the calories spent where not as great as the calories eaten!!!! That'll be gone in a day or two....just like last time, I have zero tolerance for that little bump...(hey maybe I'm getting normal)...so, since the workouts will be lighter, I'll scale back on the need for kashi! (certainly not a favorite of mine)...

Re: Triathlon Dreams, Tips, and Training

Tues, the NEW Monday! Just biked for 30mins on the trainer followed by a quik transition in to running shoes and a brisk 5minute run....just getting my legs worked out.
I feel like I've not trained very hard for this coming up race...But, now that it's right in front of me, the desire to beat my best time, my one and only time of 1hr 45mins, is compelling....So, I see myself swim a bit more agressively. I dooooo see myself biking harder, and I do see myself jogging approx the same....but if I get thru transition faster and I bike harder and swim more agressively I should drop 5 to 10mins...I'd be happy with that, tho truth be told, I'd love to come in at 1hr 30 mins. Followed by potassium suppliments or a banana....that's the goal at least!

Re: Triathlon Dreams, Tips, and Training

Today is a rest day, I biked hard in the morning yesterday followed by a transitional lite run to let my legs know the plans I have for them....last night I took the bike and a friend to the park and we put in 11miles of leisure riding, but I couldn't keep up...
Crashed after biggest looser and slept hard....Up early loads of work to do...focusing on resting my body to day. Time to start to lay out transition.

2 rest days in a row, trying to heal up from some fatigue due to a 20mi bike day....
I will probably run this afternoon. Just gonna take it easy really...they closed the pool, and I've found a pool to keep training at, so that is good. Tomorrow I'll really gear up for the race on Sunday

Well, the triathlon was great yesterday was a perfect day, and fall is setting in over the race cite...the swim was great, but I have to tell you the rest of the course is hilly, which made it rough, and 13 miles took for ever to me if you ask me....the run was ok, but I was trying very hard to beat my last time, which I did, by 3 mins....the transition was far away from the water, so after I got out of the water it took 5 mins to get back to my bike....but all in all a great day. keith pulled out of the water part, and yet He biked and ran, he had been on a survival weekend in the mountains with little sleep for 3 days and intense hiking and other man things....He is wiped out! Today a new level of sore and tired muscles hits the scene in my shoulders and arms....

Wow - what a great thread! I cycle all the time! I just got into running late this summer, but I have to say, its much harder than I thought. I have to get back to that! I'll check the exercise thread for a C25K maybe... then all I need is to get into swimming! LOL I do belong to the Y so it is doable!

Congrats Jess - What an inspiration you are!!!
