20 minutes jog/walk at aerobic training rate (1.5 miles)

      ----------------------------------
Hi, you two. I'm going to horn in on your thread. I lost about 100 lbs lowcarbing circa 2003 and did a little running for the first time in my life. For the 3 years 04, 05, and 06 I made it in under the 3:30 cutoff in the BTMR trail race (12 miles and arguably harder than a flat half-marathon) slower each year, and didn't make cutoff this year. Despondent about this since mid July, I have used this as an excuse to stop training ever since, and have regained 25-ish pounds.

I've decided to try to start again, slowly. Same way as I did in 2003, using Covert Bailey's Fit-or-Fat philosophy: Get myself to a training heart rate for minimum 20 minutes a day, 6 days a week. See where it goes from there. Or perhaps just fade away from here... I'm no runner, really, and so the Jeff Galloway run-walk system really speaks to me ... I need an accountability thread and maybe you two need some company ...

Re: Cool Running for the Week of November 11th

Welcome Woody! Glad to have you here. Sounds like you have a great training plan .. slow and steady gradual increase in speed/duration will get you there!!!

FYI .. I was never an athlete really .. and started out with walking 7 days a week, and then S L O W L Y progressed to jogging for short distances. Persistence definitely is the name of the game with training .. since 2004 I have run 2 full marathons, many half marathons, and tons of 5ks 10ks and 15ks. Its never too late to start (or to begin again!)

Congratulations getting back on track (pardon the pun). The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and you're already over that hurdle!

          Keep it up!

            Welcome Woody!

10 miles in today. 5 miles @15k race pace (about 8:30 per mile). The other 5 miles averaged around 9:30 or so.

Re: Cool Running for the Week of November 11th

Rich, do you have a Garmin? I've been toying with the idea of getting one for Christmas to measure my PPM .. just wonder if its really worth the $$? Any thoughts? My previously reliable Polar HRM is starting to die on me after nearly 4 years of flawless service, so either I get a new Polar or a Garmin .. decisions/decisions!

Wednesday, 11/14: 8 mile run in 1:30. Gotta start seriously building some miles here. I'm thinking of doing a double race weekend for Gasparilla (Feb 9&10) with a 15k on Sat and a half marathon on Sun. We shall see how training goes.

Re: Cool Running for the Week of November 11th

I have a Polar 625X. Absolutely love it. Flawless for going on 4 years now. It gives me distance, current pace, and current heart rate all at once on the screen. A bit pricey, but well worth it IMHO.

I did have a GARMIN before. It was OK (it was before they added the HRM option). My brother has a new one and really likes it.

Running 2 races back to back. You're crazy just like me. Kind of like your own "Goofy" challenge.

                  20 more minutes jog+walk ~~~ 1.5 miles

                  --------------------
That's 3 days in a row now. Ain't much, but as least it's a start! Trail running has been one of the few types of exercise I have enjoyed well enough to stick to doing regularly for any period of time, and I'd like to get it back. I have my eye on a couple of future local running events to possibly commit to preparing for, but for now it needs to just be tomorrow. (Might grow a wild hair and try the 5k turkey trot predict Saturday an hour away.)
