    Re: Why no swimming posts?

I swam a couple times a week over the fall term....I loved it! I took a class that taught me the basics in how the strokes were SUPPOSED to be and then learned how to improve speed. Swimming is such a great exercise! I also logged my distance with Lady Hawke's mileage challenge...she's so supportive! Keep up the swimming Steph!

      Re: Why no swimming posts?

I used to be a moderator here years ago under a different name & we had lots of swimming threads then

Swimming is the ultimate aerobic workout working all the muscles of the body & also entails regulated breathing. The water is the perfect workout machine, all you have to do to increase resistance is try to swim faster. It is a noninjury sport you can do all your life

I am 58 years old & I still swim 5 times a week minimum, 4 of those with a masters swim team. Swimming nonstop 45 min to 1 hour is a SERIOUS workout. When I dont swim I feel like shite. The 1st few laps every day getting my body completely streched is extremely gratifying & maybe the best momen of my day

For people who are severly overweight getting in the water is one of the 1st things they can do that is not going to get them injured.
The only equipment you really need for swimming is a good pair of goggles & a speedo. A good pair of shower slippers/clogs worn at all times will minimize the chance of getting athletes foot in the changing rooms. Swimming is hard on your hair, you need a good not too harsh daily shampoo as part of your swim kit

I will search some archives & see if I can come up with some stuff I have written previously on swimming

        Re: Why no swimming posts?

Could only find this- pretty much what I just posted:

Health & exercise professionals all agree that swimming is the ultimate all aerobic, calorie burning exercise. The water is the most pefectly designed workout machine in the world, the faster you swim the more resistance you get. Slow down & the resistance decreases

It is totally nonimpact (no injuries) endurance building activity & if you ramp up the speeds it becomes anerobic strength building too. Swimming is a great starting point for severly obese people to get them exercising again w/o injury

I do also run, lift, use a Nordic Track as part of my regular program BUT swimming is my CORE exercise! For all around health it is the BEST of them all. I have been swimming at my current pool for close to 10 years & it is 80% the same people in the morning that I started w/10 years ago.

Most Gym work has to do with isolated muscle sets & the aerobic stuff is still usually just lower body work that gets up the heart rate. Running is good but also is lower body & people who do it long term almost always eventually end up injuring their ankles or knees

The closest thing to a swimming level workout out of the pool are the fairly newly popular ellipticals & even better the old fashioned nordic track which gives a full independent upper & lower body workout simulataneously

Still all health professionals agree NOTHING gives a full body workout like swimming at a good clip. It combines the elements of yoga (controlled breathing is essential) is a highly aerobic activity & when fast enough the water gives you enough resistance to make it anerobic & It exercises ALL your muscles

Besides the full body workout the other strength of swimming is the fact that is a total noninjury workout allowing you to do it for your entire life. Regular Swimmers are incredibally healthy people having good body tone, endurance & a low resting heart rate.

It is an activity that you can continue to do as you get older, Nobody runs or lifts or goes to the gym consistantly for decades(trust me maybe a couple of years or 5-10 years max) but regular swimmers do keep it up for their whole life & the number of extremely healthy older people you see at the pool is because they have been swimmers for decades as their core activity too!

If you swim every day YOU WILL BE HEALTHY

The other great thing is a pair of goggles & a Speedo fit into the palm of your hand & cost next to nothing

Finally to find a pool where you are go here

But I'm wondering why there's no posts about it? Is it not that good exercise? According to Extrapounds.com I burn over 700 kcal an hour doing it.
I plan on starting the laps in pools when spring hits here in Florida. We do not have a pool. I personally would not want one with the kids being so small, and non swimmers right now. Anyhow, good point! I think any exercise that works all the muscles at once is great!

Hi I joined a gym less than 2 miles away from me last week. Luckily they have large heated pool and spa! I used it for the first time early this morning. I love it! I will be looking online for water exercise routines and will post them here!

              Sounds great LovingMeAgain!

I love to swim, but don't seem to have the time to get to the pool much. I saw a sponsored 1 miles swim coming up in August, I'd love to do that. Its in the sea in Brighton, so I'd be scared of sea monsters, but it would be great to complete something like that!

I used to swim a lot, but the chlorine was killing my skin so I decided to stop. But it's great that you're swimming

                  Re: Why no swimming posts?

I'd like to breathe some life into this thread again! Stephbob and others, I LOVE swimming and used to be so much more toned and fit when I was a regular swimmer. I want it back in my life! I joined the Y where they have a GREAT pool. I swam twice this week for an hour straight, it was GLORIOUS! I will be going there more often to swim and hope there are others who want to join in on this swimming thread! Maybe we can have a virtual ADBB swimming club!!!

                        Re: Why no swimming posts?

Up until three weeks ago, I swam at least 4 days a week. It was great for me. I am ready to get back to it. Last week, I ordered a swimming cap because my hair was getting super scraggly.
