  • Walking/running/treadmill question?

    Hey everyone!

I have a problem and was wondering if anyone had any advice...
I have been going to the gym for about a week now and I usually start with the treadmill to get myself warmed up.. The only problem is, after a few minutes, I get an intense pain from my outer ankle to about halfway up my calf.. I don't really know what causes it, but it makes me have to stop my workout to massage the area and keeps me from reaching my target heart rate. This problem is really getting me discouraged because it is painful and makes me feel like i'm not working out effectively enough. Does anyone have any insight on what this might be? I wear Van's brand shoes to work out in. Should I get new shoes, should I try stretching, is it lack of potassium or something? I really am desperate to find a way to resolve this issue.

    SHOES!!!

This often the problem- and it's something so simple that people tend to overlook it. In the classes I've been assistant teaching, when someone comes up and tells me something we're doing hurts them- it's *always* the first question out of my mouth.

What are you wearing for shoes? Are they GOOD running/walking shoes? Were you fitted for them?? Get thee to a running store and get fitted for shoes. Having a shoe that is designed for your stride is imperative.

Yup I'm with Brook, I'd be willing to bet its the shoes!

I had terrible knee problems with a pair of shoes I was wearing, that was a couple of years ago, after changing the shoes I've never had knee problems again.

As Brook mentioned a running store will fit you properly for shoes...

I had a problem too and went to my newbalance store and they had me take my shoes off, examined my feet, and made me walk around to study my gait then had me try on several pair and i left with some happy feet

I too need to get my butt over and get sized up for running shoes. I've been doing my workouts in a pair of $10 champion shoes I picked up at Payless about 2 years ago! They are very comfy, and I've not had any problems with sore legs, shins, or toes...but I know that I need to invest in a better pair--my piggies deserve it!

I have the exact issue. Shoes will help... but thats not your issue. You need to do 15 minuted of strethcing of your ancles and feet before you start. You MUST.
