  • Cool Running for the week of March 28, 2005

:wave Runners!! (Walkers are welcome here too!!)

Welcome to another week of cardio conditioning!

Mon, 3/28: I ran 8 miles today with DD .. Felt great! We had good resistance from a 30 mph wind, but at least the humidity was GONE, thanks to a good cool front!! YAY!! What a difference running makes WITHOUT that STEAM HEAT! :joy

Burned 698 calories during my run!! And best of all, I broke the 100 mile mark for the month!! I am now at 103.5 miles for the month of March!! WOOHOO!!

Off day tomorrow, but will hit it again come Wednesday!!

My goodness but you sure rack up the miles, Betty! One day I'll be able to pace you..one day....lol

Today, I'm really excited to say, I ran my whole route!!! I did a warm up walk, and a cool down walk, but I ran the whole rest of the way...hills included! I'm so excited I could just plotz...whatever plotz means...lol :joy I was gone for just over 40 minutes.

I believe I'm going about a mile and a half, and I'm going to give it this week, and next week at running the whole thing, and I'll extend the route further. When all is said and done, my goal route will be 5.4 kilometers but I'm not ready to do all that just yet.

I'm suffering a little bit from shin splints, but nothing major. I'm starting to do more stretches before and after (I have been really bad not doing anything up till now) so we'll see if that helps.

It was nice and cool out this morning, with just a spattering of rain. I wore a cap and a rain jacket and ended up tying the jacket around my waist, and the hat just made me sweat more I think..lol

Awesome job, April!!! So glad spring is there for you! You deserve it! It surely has been a very long winter for you!! Spring .. what a beautiful word!!

Moochie, hon, you're doing fantastic! Remember, this old broad didn't get this far QUICK! Oh man, I can remember struggling to run 6 blocks! :yikes I remember telling DH I didn't think I'd ever be able to finish a full mile! So the key is, PERSISTENCE .. do NOT give up or give in!!

Hon, here's a tip for avoiding shin splints. As you are running, be SURE you are landing initially on your HEEL, then on the ball of your foot and then pushing off on your toes ... running exclusively on the BALL of your foot is a sure way to develop shin splints ... so its HEEL, BALL, TOE .. with every step. K??? Let me know if that helps. Also, be sure you have a GREAT pair of RUNNING shoes, with extra cushion in the heel and the ball of the foot. I personally recommend the New Balance 991s (my bony feet seem to LOVE those shoes .. I'm on my 4th pair!!) But anything with good cushioning should help alot.

Most of all, if you are in PAIN, you need to give your body time to recover. NEVER NEVER NEVER increase your mileage/distance more than 10% at a time .. and stick with that particular distance for several weeks before increasing .. once in a while, drop it back a mile or so for awhile. Shaking things up is a good way to keep your body guessing!

Hope that info helps. Take care of yourself and be sure you allow yourself a rest day in between runs!

EAT LOTS OF PROTEIN WHICH WILL HELP YOUR MUSCLES REPAIR!!

Can I jump in here for this week?

I'm a walker right now, but wouldn't rule out becoming a runner at some point.

              Monday 3/28
              8460 steps
8403 aerobic steps for 75 min.
              459 calories
              4.13 miles

              Thanks

Thank you so much, Betty...I'll pay more attention to how I'm running and see if I'm doing what you suggest...I think I am, but I'll know better on wednesday.

I'm not in constant pain or anything, but I am aware of my shins, especially when I'm sitting down for a while. It's certainly bearable, and I don't feel like I'm injured, just more of a "Wow..I can feel I was doing something!" type of feeling.

I have some great Brooks runners that I just bought a few weeks ago, and knowing what you just told me, I'll see if I need to pad them up a bit or not in the next week.

I appreciate all your suggestions and advice, thankyou!!

ABSOLUTELY!!! Any kind of cardiovascular heartrate raising exercise qualifies you here!! WELCOME!!! And great job!!!

Moochie, you are so welcome and keep up the great work!!!

                  :joy

Off day for me today .. the muscles aren't sore after my 8 mile run yesterday so that's GREAT! :icondance I so look forward to increasing the distance ... I'm already psyched about the Disney Half Marathon next January .... 13.1 miles!! WOOHOO!! That is my ultimate goal!! I figure if I can get my training runs up to 10 miles .. then I'll be ready for the BIG RUN!!

                  :guns

Its all about persistence and taking it slow and making steady progress!!

I'm just checking in to say that I took a rest day today. Now I'm thinking that perhaps I should have gone ahead and walked today since the weather is looking kind of iffy for the next two days. I can probably find someplace to walk indoors though.

                    Have a good evening! :wave

Not my best exercise day. I didn't run, but did end up riding my bike for about 3 miles. Not too fast paced, and only burned 94 cals.

                      Tomorrow will be better. :guns

Did my run today and worked on my form...making sure I land heel first, and it seems that I do that naturally. I think the shin splints are just something that will pass as I get stronger.

I don't think I worked hard enough at it today though...when I was done I was hardly out of breath...I think I need to push a little more. Not to the point of gasping, but just give myself a bit more of a challenge.
Maybe this was just a 'soft' day for me...?
Anyway, I did my whole route again, and I'm pretty happy with that.

                          Excellent, Moochie!!

So glad you are landing on your heel and rolling your foot forward as you're running! GREAT! I am sure with adequate stretching and sufficient rest, your shin pain will resolve on its own!!

As for pushing it .. try adding 10% to your mileage for a week or two .. never add more than that at a time or you can risk injury and you don't want that!! :nono How far is your current route??

As an aside....your speed will automatically increase as your mileage increases .. amazing as that sounds, it really is true. The farther you go and the more stamina and endurance you build, when it comes to race time, your speed will be there!!

DD & I plan another 8 mile run this afternoon. Its a perfect running day with very little wind and low humidity! I can't wait to get out there!!

                          Happy running/walking/moving EVERYONE! :hug

WOOOHOOO I jogged and it felt great chalk me in for 2.2 miles here yesterday. I thought that I would not be able to do it but it was actually a nice easy run. I didn't go too fast cause I didn't want to cause any problems all in all a great run I was so happy to be going again. I have been doing weights so I am not lagging in exercise but, I was lagging in cardio.

I am so happy I did it and no chest pain from my lungs so I think all is good.

It looks like it's been a good day for everyone so far today. :ThumbsUp I went walking in the park after getting off from working midnights because it's suppose to pour this afternoon. It's a beautiful day but the wind is awful!
