Our favorite exercise? I HATE to exercise. It's strictly a discipline for me to exercise. Someday, I hope to find some type of exercise that thrills me and look forward to reading the posts on this tread for some ideas.
I used to walk alot, I started a walking regimen the day I started Atkins (January 19, 2002) ... then slowly increased the pace to more of a power walk ... and when I got to the point I could power walk a mile in less than 12 minutes, I started a slow jog ... that led to a quicker jog....
Anyway, its been 3 years and 3 months and 10 days ... I'm 11 pounds below goal and absolultely hooked on running! I got me a heart rate monitor and now I look forward to running 4 days a week, 8 miles at a time .... I remember looking back when running 6 blocks had me on oxygen!! :guns Last weekend, I ran a 10k (6.2 miles) and finished 3rd in the 45-49 age group!! See, it CAN BE DONE!!
Whatever you enjoy, just keep at it and you will amaze yourself!
Betty, your dedication impresses me. I am trying to get started on a walking regimen, however my schedule has not been very permissive with me recently. Today I will get home at a reasonable time so I will get started when I get home.

I was a bonafide couch potato when I started Atkins (and it SHOWED!) ...
I have discovered an interesting thing about exercise .. Make a commitment for a week .. then two weeks .. It takes about 2 weeks for a commitment to become a habit ... after awhile, you will discover that your daily walks make you feel so much better and help so much with the weight loss that you won't miss them for ANYTHING! That's exactly how it went for me ... one day led to another .... and now, whether I get anything else done or not, the RUNNING is priority!

Could you describe your monitor please? I have one; with a chest strap, which to me is a pain. I know I need to use it, but I don't care for it.
Thanks

well, if it is hot and humid I like swimming laps. A mile or a mile-and-a-half will do just fine.
On a cool summer morning, or at dawn in the spring when the birds are making their racket, i.e., mating calls, or in the fall when the geese are flocking into the area and migrating from the Chesapeake to the Delaware Bay or vice-versa I like a good run. Right now its a 4 mile run please.
But when I find myself in mountain country, (which is not the way the local terrain is) a steep hike up the side of one of those mountains helps me to remember how the hike is just like this WOE journey. One-foot-in-front-of-the-other will eventually get you to the goal. Ahhh, now a good 8 or 10 mile hike through the woods to a mountain summit is wonderful exercise.
And if my kids are wanting a nice outing with their mom we might head on a bike ride, or go canoeing or kayaking -- yes, maybe that's my favorite exercise. Oh it is so HARD to decide. Can I just spend the entire day exercising????

I got it last year and at first, it was a pain to use so I didn't use it much. I also wasn't as serious about running when I first got it as I am now. I realize now how important it is (ESSENTIAL, ACTUALLY) to make sure you are exercising in your target zone for maximum cardiovascular conditioning. As a new runner, my BIGGEST ISSUE was going TOO FAST .. which I found out when I got the HRM because I was constantly out of my target zone .. NOT A GOOD THING. So now, a year later, I wouldn't think of running without the HRM because it keeps me honest ... and it measures my calories and the percentage of fat I burn with each workout! Since I've been wearing it faithfully (about 10 months) I've logged nearly 60,000 calories burned..........talk about motivating!
I also wear it when I run 10k races because in the heat of competition, its so daggoned easy to get caught up with the RUSH of other runners and overdo it and burn out .. by wearing the HRM, I stay in my zone, preserve my energy and end up passing alot of those QUICK STARTERS by the time the race is over!!
In other words, I LOVE MY HRM and its been the very best investment I've made for my running (aside from my New Balance 991s which I could never be without!!)
Thanks Betty, you motivated me to find my Accumen, ... now if I can find the new battery I purchased, and start weighing it again. But I will have to start looking into a wrist model. It would be nice not to have to wear the chest strap.

Wow, it's hard for me to pick my favourite. I've gone from a couch potato to a total exercise junkie. I really like running and am missing it. I have a feeling I'll have to start over with the Couch to 5K program since it's been well over a month that I haven't been able to run. But that's ok! I love weight training! I love total immersion swimming! I'm really enjoying cycling, although of all of the training I do, I probably struggle with it the most. I like doing yoga and pilates too.
I really like the x-trainer. I dislike that there is no place for me to put my water bottle or disc man on it though. But workout wise, it's great :yes
Age: 18/F

Being beaten is often a temporary condition, giving up is what makes it
permanent.
