Re: overweight while running for basic training

I remember having all the breakfast food piled on my plate... Pancakes, with beans on top, with scrambled eggs, with bacon, and sausage, and with whatever else they piled on in one big pile on top of everything else. And they DID make us eat everything. Every meal. The food plan that they use is designed to get the most performance out of you. You definitely won't get overweight in basic...

Maybe you should consider getting a trainer to help you out. You are setting up a mental block for yourself "I cannot run" And then you may not push it as hard as you need to. A trainer would help you out a lot. Are there running clubs in your community. Here the local running stores run clubs and offer sessions. I think to get you speed up you may have to increase your distance a bit more.

Good luck. I am glad to see you are still keeping things going.

Re: overweight while running for basic training

I didn't understand what 2big4mysize said when he mentioned walking at 7.5 Mph. Though now it seems as though my leg muscles are stretching and lengthening cause I was able to walk at 5.0mph for a little bit. It now seems easier to jog at 6mph than it does at 5mph cause the higher mph allows my legs to extend more fully.

It feels as though my muscles are stretching cause my stride seems to grown. I ran the 1.5mile at 5mph without stopping finally.

I'm now running at 6mph and did .50 mile this morning. I could have done .75 mile without much trouble but don't mind taking my time.

I still very very much feel like a fish out of water on a treadmill. Going good so far though. My weight is holding still at 180lbs.

          I can walk 7.5MPH now.
I started at 2MPH when I was over 300 pounds and worked my way up going faster and faster with more and more incline to keep m heart rate in the right level for me and since fall of 2004 can walk 7.5 MPH or 8 min miles. can't run cause the motion hurts my knees but walking with one foot on the ground at all times I can fly

If you are reporting in less then a month you need to be not taking your time and get moving! even if you just walk the rest you should be doing more miles every day How is the weight loss coming?

Ya my knees feel like they are made of glass when I run, so I try to take it easy cause I don't want to twist a ankle or knee or whatever.

As far as the weight loss, it isn't happening at all. My body went from 170 to 180 and stopped on a dime at 180 and won't budge since. I taped myself and I think my bodyfat is 21.5percent. At my age of 29 I'm supposed to be under 20percent, but it aint gonna happen. Once I turn 30 in Sept. I'm allowed to be up to 24percent body fat.

I think I'm still on course for basic training. As long as I get the 1.5mile in 13mins or less. Basic is 2 1/2 months and at the end I have to get the run under 12mins. That should be plenty of time to shave off a minute or more.

              dorsi flexors

              UPdate:

I believe last time I wrote I was running at 5mph.
I upped my speed to 6.5 and ran into shin splints. Its gradual and causes intense binding of the front of my calves.

The video describes perfectly what I have as "weak Dorsi Flexors" aprox at 1:50 into the vid.
              YouTube - Shin Splints

I guess from reading the forums that there is nothing I can do but wait for my leg muscles to catch up to me.
              Its very annoying and frustrating.

I'm going to keep walking but everytime I try to run now my calves bind up at around .60 of a mile.

I'm going to take this time to force my weight back down to 170-175lbs so at least I don't feel too overweight.

              Still at it.

This is why I loved using the Elliptical machine, no impact on my joints.

I have been reading on the military forums that in boot camp if you develop shin splints, they tell you to suck it up and keep running. I need to work on stretching and strengthening the dorsi flexors. I'm thinking to switch it to long distance walking for the mean time.
