  • Dreamfield Pastas with DIGESTIBLE CARBS

I just found out about Dreamfield Low Carb Pastas. THEY taste just like the real thing. However, they have 5 "digestible carbs" instead of "net carbs."

Are digestible carbs okay. Does anyone know if it's okay to have these low carb pastas. They taste and feel just like the real thing, but supposedly only 5 digestible carbs to effect the body.

If anyone has any facts about digestible carbs and if these pastas are atkins approved, please let me know!

They do taste awesome. I have some occassionally as a treat BUT I'm not so sure that I believe their claims. If you do a search you can find an explanation of how they come up with the claim that there are only 5 "digestible carbs", you'll have to decide for yourself if you believe the claim or not. Also be sure that you watch the serving size! Its very easy to eat alot more than the 5 carb serving.

Are "digestible carbs" good or just a gimmick?

So does anyone know if these pastas are kosher for the low carb lifestyle or is this just a gimmick?

Re: Dreamfield Pastas with DIGESTIBLE CARBS

The pastas were developed for diabetics, but became marketed for low carbers.

The pasta is processed in a way that causes the starch to be digested slowly, so it doesn't cause a blood sugar spike. However, slow digestion doesn't mean no digestion. So you are eating the real net carb (total carb -fiber carb on the package), but the slow digestion of the starch mimics a blood sugar spike 5 "real" net carbs would have.

        Editing to add...
Here's Dana Carpender's take on it:
        http://www.holdthetoast.com/httblog/...es/000116.html

        And David Mendosa's
        http://www.mendosa.com/dreamfields_pasta.htm

I can't find the site anymore, but it basically said that re-heating or eating the pasta cold causes blood sugar spikes. And over-cooking it can do the same thing...

they claim they have modified the molecules to allow the carbohydrates to be surronded and blocked from absorption but as Megs pointed out if you cook it longer then they recommend the heating denatures the proteins and allows the carbs to get out and be just as easily digested as other pastas carbs.
Muellers makes a low carb wheat based pasta that tastes like the real thing but it is much higher in carbs.

there are soy based low carb protein noodles but they do have the soy flavor so if you don't like soy don't waste your money.

It's one of the few things the places around my dorm sell, so I added it in as an occasional meal about two weeks ago. I count them as the full net carbs, but at least they don't seem to cause any cravings for me.

I cook mine extra long because nobody in my house will eat AL DENTE pasta and I've never gained an ounce while eating it. Nor do I get cravings!

VIVA LA DREAMFIELDS! I'm making lasagna with it this weekend!

Re: Dreamfield Pastas with DIGESTIBLE CARBS

I ate some pasta yesterday for dinner. Maybe an hour or so later, I tested my urine for ketones and it was in the high range--very dark purple. So I figured the pasta didn't effect me negatively. Then, in the morning when I first work up, I tested my urine again, and it was a very dark purple again, indicating I was in ketosis. So about 3-4 hours later, before I ate lunch, I tested again, and I didn't have any ketones present in my urine. My husband didn't either. So I don't know if it was the pasta or what? I'm kinda confused because my urine showed ketones after eating it. So now I'm going to go back to the old fashioned way of induction--all natural foods, no low carb products because it's not worth messing up my progress.

I would like to get a glucose test kit so that I can do some testing with it again later.

It won't affect ketones, because ketones don't indicate shifts in blood sugar.

Those sticks aren't always an accurate indicator. Things like water consumption, age of the sticks, can effect the readings. Go by what your body is telling you. If you don't feel hungry....you're probably in ketosis. Good luck.

Those wouldn't be ok for Induction, would they? I thought Soy was on the Legume Rung of OWL?
What would we do without it?

Re: Dreamfield Pastas with DIGESTIBLE CARBS

but don't you think that if i consumed too many carbs from the pasta, then that would have kicked me out of ketosis?

what type of glucose monitor would you guys recommend to get? I don't want to spend a lot of money, but are there important features I need to make sure the monitor has?

P.S. I definitely feel like I'm in ketosis, the breath and dry mouth thing, but my keto strips aren't showing any ketones in urine. maybe by tomorrow I'll be in ketosis.

                        thanks

Nope, Dreamfields isn't okay for Induction. It's made of wheat, and wheat isn't allowed during the Induction phase.

Ketosis---it depends. If the carbs are being released and digested slowly enough, your body might not "see" it as the whole 20+ carbs. And there's always a possibility that you have a high CCLL, so your body can handle more than 20 net carbs and still lose weight.

Ok, we ventured out and tried the Dreamfields Pasta tonight. Will know in about 2 hours how it effects Mr. B's blood sugar levels. He only had one serving. I am VERY anxious to see.
Anyone else tried it yet and tested after???
