But anyways i heard it does make you only loose waterweight, however at the same time makes you burn calories, personally i dont care for the waterweight, i would just like to burn some extra calories.

    I heard up to 300 in a 30 minute session .

Does anyone know or can help me get "factual" info in this ??

i mean It does have really outstanding health benefits and does flush out many dangerous radicals in your body.

Since i have one in my condo complex i think i am going to try it for a week ... since Im in week two of induction and NOT loosing anything !

Uffff ... SO WHO IS UP FOR A SAUNA CHALLEGE ???
i did a search on this topic. i found a bunch which comfirm the weight loss you describe. it was no shock to see that the article i read were on sauna selling websites.

i did however, find this bit of an article: (bold is mine)

Saunas or steam rooms are a fantastic way to lose weight, though it is important to use the facilities wisely. They are best used in conjunction with a more traditional form of exercise and a healthy, balanced diet. This will achieve improved all round fitness, weight loss and ensure you feel healthier in general

    http://www.sureshotweightloss.com/st...s-saunas.shtml

use of a sauna should not replace exercise. you are not toning muscles while sitting in a sauna. if this was "the way to do things" , i feel confident that Dr. A would have included a sauna section in the book. i also think you will not be losing weight wisely as boonie stated in her post, referring to water loss and salts. i would agree that you can detox. but i would also say, if you are doing atkins, following the plan and exercising, you wouldn't need to detox.

many if not all the articles also said to be very careful as far as time spent in a sauna.

Judgemental because I don't know what Prada is? LOL, that's cause I'm not a rich snob who gives a rats butt about brand names.

I wasn't being judgemental about those of you who like to parade around in your birthday suits, but you are all being pretty judgemental toward me and those of us who think maybe a little modesty in public places is in order. Don't feel sorry for me, what a joke! I feel just as sorry for people who feel the need to be exhibitonists.

Funny how everyone is entitled to their own feelings and opinions as long as they are the same as yours, some things never change around here!

And thank you Jimmie for bringing this thread back OT!

See, in my opinion, that's being judgemental right there. Just because someone knows of the brand name Prada, doesn't mean they are rich. And rich people who DO know what the brand name is aren't necessarily "snobs".

Can you please tell me where I made any judgements about you or anyone who has different values or opinions? In my experience, and after re-reading mine and Heidi's posts, we were discussing the different reasons people have different preference, values, choices...but made no judgements or expressed feeling "sorry" for anyone who believes differently. If I contributed to you feeling judged, please tell me specifically how I communicated that to you and I will apologize, as that was NOT my intention. I have deep respect for others' choices, whatever their motivation, whether they agree with me or not, and if I am not communicating that clearly, it is important to me to correct that.

In that same vein, it seems inflammatory and offensive to me to say that, because I am comfortable with my body and have no qualms about being nude in certain situations where it is socially acceptable, that I NEED to be an EXHIBITIONIST. Exhibitionists, by definition, act to attract attention. In a setting where nudity is the norm, someone who wears clothes would be considered the exhibitionist, because it would stand out and attract attention. Being nude in a sauna at the gym where all of the other women are nude does not fit the defintion of exhibitionism. It's all about context, and name calling IS judgemental.

this thread has gotten way off the original posters comments and concerns. i tried to bring it back to that conversation. i do believe that enough links and information were provided. if the conversation wants to get back to the effects of saunas with concern to weight loss, i would be pleased to let things continue.

Re: SAUNA CHALLENGE !!! Burn more calories !!!

here is another interesting article that, at the very least, give some precautions while using the sauna. if you are on the verge of thinking ah ha! i'll spend more time in the sauna, thus losing more weight, it would be good to read this and research some more.
note the water lost and the recommendations of fluids afterwards.

                <H3>Man's Health and Sauna

A saunas' dry heat (which can get as high as 185 degrees F) has profound effects on the body. Skin temperature soars to about 104 degrees F within minutes. The average person will pour out a pint of sweat during a short stint in a sauna. The pulse rate jumps by 30% or more, allowing the heart to nearly double the amount of blood it pumps each minute. Most of the extra blood flow is directed to the skin; in fact, the circulation actually shunts blood away from the internal organs. Blood pressure is unpredictable, rising in some people but falling in others.

The November issue of Harvard Men's Health Watch explains how these changes may influence a man's health.

"All in all, saunas appear safe for the body, but there is little evidence that they have health benefits above and beyond relaxation and a feeling of well-being," says Dr. Harvey Simon, editor-in-chief of Harvard Men's Health Watch. However, heart patients should check with their doctors before taking a sauna. Studies show them to be safe for people with stable coronary artery disease. "But patients with poorly controlled blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, unstable angina, and advanced heart failure or heart valve disease will probably be advised to stay cool," says Dr. Simon.

He suggests that men and women who use sauna follow these simple precautions:
                • Avoid alcohol and medications that may impair sweating and produce overheating before and after your sauna.
                • Stay in no more than 15-20 minutes.
                • Cool down gradually afterward.
                • Drink two to four glasses of cool water after each sauna.
                • Don't take a sauna when you are ill, and if you feel unwell during your sauna, head for the door

Re: SAUNA CHALLENGE !!! Burn more calories !!!

So, after poking around on the internet, I found several articles that essentially say, "People equate sweating with fat loss, because they sweat when they work out, therefore they believe that sweating in a sauna equals weight loss."

You do lose some "weight", because you are sweating, but it isn't fat. If you are, in fact, burning more calories (and I couldn't find any info to support this that wasn't on a site selling saunas, as Jimmie pointed out earlier), I would have to say the amount is neglible based on my personal experience. I have been practicing Bikram yoga for over 2 years, anywhere from 2-5 times a week, and we spend 90 minutes in a room heated to 105 degrees, 50% humidity (but it is usually much higher because of the outside humidity). The poses are very intense and require a lot of strength and balance, but despite that, I didn't lose any weight until I added cardio and weightlifting to my workout regimen.

I would encourage anyone to use a sauna....because it does feel really good, and there are claims that it helps "detox" the body through sweating, but if you are doing it because you think it will help you lose fat faster, you will be disappointed. There really is no easy way to burn the fat, our bodies are designed to conserve it and you have to work hard.

Oh, and if you DO get some extra sauna time, make sure you drink that water and replenish your electrolytes!

On a side note, I learned that the wood in the sauna at my gym is treated with a microbial agent, and it is disinfected 4 times a day by the cleaning staff using a special "sauna disinfectant". I was unable to find anything online that indicated anyone has caught an infectious disease in a sauna - if someone else comes up with that info, please post, it would be very helpful.

Actually pregnancies have been known to have been passed around in the sauna. Not by me though but not for lack of trying

                          Sauna implicated in Legionnaire's cases
A sauna has been blamed for six cases of Legionnaire's disease in the Netherlands, two of which were fatal. A female kidney transplant patient died of the disease 10 days after using the sauna. The other fatality was a 59-year-old immunosuppressed man. Dr J.W. Den Boer of the Municipal Health Service, along with other colleagues from Haarlem, reported that water from the footbath in the sauna contained the same strain of Legionella pneumophila that was found in the victims. The operators of the sauna have made changes to prevent water stagnation and are testing the water regularly. These are the first documented cases of Legionnaire's disease associated with a sauna. Source: The Lancet, 1998;351:114.

                          SAUNA AND STEAM ROOM

In the survey conducted by Men's Fitness, the sauna was found to contain high levels of citrobacter freundii bacteria, an agent of infections including pneumonia, and blood and urinary tract infections.

'The bacteria usually lives in the gut and its presence indicates fecal contamination,' says Dr Ready.

He suspects the high count could stem from the wooden benches in saunas and steam rooms which have lots of crevices, providing ideal gaps for bacteria to colonise.

Citrobacter is often found with other intestine-dwelling bacteria, such as E. coli.

i have a question about the benches/wood in these saunas. those of you that are familiar with them can enlighten me.

are these benches/seats just raw wood? by that i mean and i am assuming, they are not sealed or laquered over. is that the case?

i know cedar is resistant to bugs but that is not the same as germs or bacteria.
it has to be some kind of treated wood, right?
