    Re: Hemp Hearts

I know exactly what you mean with the 'green' taste mog, I find the seeds have a nutty 'grassy' taste. I bought some yesterday and tried them plain, they are very small and fairly soft (i bought hulled). I'm curious to see how they will grind up. I did some more research on the net, not alot of research on them, but the claims are they are a near perfect balance of Omega 3's/6's and very high in protein..which is interesting. Biggest downfall i can see is they're pretty high calorie, 2 tbsns of seed has 150 cals! I think they'd go well in a smoothie too especially being high in protein, they might be a good substitue for protein powder.

Since they're fairly small and soft you could bake with them w/o grinding them i would think too.

Here's good sites with info: www.hempseed.ca and http://www.hemptrade.ca/en/public/about-food.ihtml

It is fairly cheap here (and was on sale). It's around $10 for a lb, but it's so light so a lb would be alot! I got a fair sized bag (maybe 2.5 cups)for about $3 I'm thinking it will be imported there so might be a bit more .

I don't think it is legal to grow it down there. We're pretty lenient on that kind of stuff here...

        Re: Hemp Hearts

So yesterday I added my hemp hearts to a smoothie, and it was pretty good. Not as grainy as flax is when you add it to smoothies. One of those articles says it really fills you due to the fat/protein content, and they were right. I had the smoothie at lunch time and never ate again till dinnertime. I wasn't hungry at all. might not have been that..but it was interesting..usually a smoothie doesn't fill me up that much.

This morning, i tried grinding some in the coffee grinder..took less than a minute to turn into a paste. Instead, I added 1 tbsn to a flax bun i was making..I couldn't even tell it was in there. Only problem is they don't recommend heating above a certain temp so i'm not sure if 1min in the microwave would be too much? Though i believe they also say the same about flax.

I think it's more like almond flour than flax, it's alot softer I guess because of the oil content. I found a few recipes on line for hummus and guacamole, If i have time i'll start a thread in the food and cooking chat.

The biggest downfall i can see with it is the calorie content..it's pretty high.

          Re: Hemp Hearts

Jimmie, it was like 9-10 bucks for the bottle, I guess its about a 10-12 ounce bottle? I don't remember. I didn't even look to see what the price of the seeds was. But I think they are a lot more expensive here than they are in Canada.

The oil is not much more than decent Olive oil. I did try it last nite on my salad in place of the olive oil and it really was quite good! I was surprised, mixed with the vinegar it had a wonderful flavor!

I may check today to see if they've gotten the seeds in yet. I'll let you know how much if I do.

I looked on line and saw a bunch of sites raving about the seeds too Sadie, but they all seeemed to be sites that sold them, so I wonder how much is real info and how much is hype?

Can't you go out treasure hunting by yourself? When it comes to grocery shopping I'd rather go alone, John makes me nervous cause he's always in a hurry.

i have a feeling that this is not something that i will find at the local market. it's gonna take a search. i don't know my way around here all that well and yadda yadda. 23 excuses of why i'll wait on jack so he can go to.

That's cool. I'd love to take JOhn with me if he could just relax and enjoy it, but he always makes me feel like I have to rush! Unless of course we go to the tool store!

LOL ladies, I can relate to the shopping with men issues! We rarely shop together because he's so annoying because he tries to rush me out.

Yeah MOG, I also noticed that the studies weren't unbiased..I have been trying to find some but not having much luck. i did find a government of canada study that doesn't believe that hemp products have any health benefit, and may be detrimental, but then this is also the gov't that has the low fat/high carb food pyramid as well...

here's the one article i found that was against it:

The hemp oil I got says it has 0.0 THC in it.

Hemp seeds do not contain THC, but here, if a cop pulls you and finds one on your floorboard he'll consider that justification to confiscate your vehicle and charge you with CDS posession!

Wow that's brutal! it's not nearly that bad here..getting caught with a couple of joints is not a big offence anymore from what I know...medicinal marijuana is legal..though gov't controlled. An interesting statistic I heard on the news recently: they estimate there are more marijuana grow ops in theToronto area, than in the entrire US! We even had a closed down brewery that was turned into one..they were growing the pot in the giant beer vats. It was quite brilliant IMO...they ran it for years and actually had an entire staff that lived in teh building and looked after it.

You could possibly, if the seed coats were contaminated by contact with the herb and then this contacted a hulled seed...

But make sure you have not eaten immature mulberries. Funny they are legal, but supposedly they contain THC (and are related to hemp).

Also don't eat poppy seed products before your test!
