I just found out today that I am celiac. What I have feared is actually true. Luckily the diet that one needs to follow as a celiac is similar to Atkins. Any others on this board in the same boat or will I need to row this boat all by myself with my bony arms? lol

Re: Celiac
I had a friend in college who was celiac. She didn't know why everything she ate made her sick, and many people thought she was anorexic. It was sort of a double-edged sword for her--she was relieved to find out what was causing her symptoms/illnesses, but it was almost daunting to figure out what she could eat and what she couldn't. She ate lots of fresh foods, like veggies, fruits, proteins--yeah very much like Atkins now that I think of it.
I don't have any advice, but I can tell you that after she figured out what foods she could and couldn't eat, her health, strength and mood improved drastically, and she looked soooooooooo much healthier than before.START 8/16/06 @ 270+~MG1: 220-12/2/06~MG2: 210-1/07~MG3: 199-3/2/07~MG4: 190-4/27/07~MG5: 180-7/04/07~GOAL: 170

Re: Celiac
I can't thank you enough for that! I too hope I can regain some weight and strength and am much more hopeful after reading that. I will need to be patient and eat my celiac/atkins style diet and wait for the results instead of giving up and binging on junk and the very foods that are worsening my condition in order to gain weight. My mood should hopefully resolve as well. Let me tell you, celiac made me a B1tch and a half but I'm already noticing a difference and look forward to the future. THANKS and you know how I feel about your gorgeous picture. You should definately look into modelling some day. I used to have super long hair and am jealous of yours. Oh, how jealous I am. Mine's growing out now and getting there. *crosses fingers*Originally posted by julirama723I had a friend in college who was celiac. Re: Celiac
it will grow out from all the good oils and proteins you will be eatting on Atkins.
so you need a gluten free diet. glad you figured this out, now educated your buddy with the icecream cake why it is bad for you but what is good for you.
there are many grains that have gluten in them other then wheat so be careful when you get to the 9th rung of OWL food. All the other rungs should be fine.by the book atkinseer

Re: Celiac
IS it possible to get a pity member of the day for having celiacs? As for the "cake/junk" provider, my revenge is posting this wonderful picture of him here. Haha, gosh, I love him so, even though he's the devil's advocate. hehe.

Re: Celiac
i was one who admitted to not knowing what celiac was and i am sure there are others watching this thread that don't know either. so i found this for your reading pleasure and information:
http://www.webmd.com/content/article/103/107220.htm
(article in part)
Digestive Diseases:
Celiac Disease
Celiac disease (also known as celiac sprue or gluten-sensitive enteropathy) is a digestive and autoimmune disorder that results in damage to the lining of the small intestine when foods with gluten are eaten. Glutens are a form of protein found in some grains. The damage to the intestine makes it hard for the body to absorb nutrients, especially fat, calcium, iron, and folate.
What Causes Celiac Disease?
Normally, the body's immune system is designed to protect it from foreign invaders. When people with celiac disease eat foods containing gluten, their immune system forms antibodies to gluten which then attack the intestinal lining. This causes inflammation in the intestines and damages the villi, the hair-like structures on the lining of the small intestine. Nutrients from food are absorbed by the villi. If the villi are damaged, the person cannot absorb nutrients and ends up malnourished, no matter how much he or she eats.

Re: Celiac
YOU guys are truly AWESOME! My friends (in the real world out here) are equally supportive. I sure have been taking advantage of the pity party here if ya know what I mean! haha. A request of "Gaz, could you get such and such or do this and that" results in a swift reply of "No, I have celiac. I'm hurting" . Muahhaha!
I am happy to say that I have gained one lb since being on my new diet. Woohoo. This may not be much, but at least the scale isn't going in the other direction! My moooooood is almost too good. Unfortunately, I've had countless essays, assignments, and exams the past couple of weeks and will have my plate full for the next few weeks but I love learning new things. It keeps me busy and helps me inch closer to achieving my goals. I loooook so much healthier, and I went shopping today for new clothes. It's amazing how one's health can truly dictate their daily activities. My fiancee bought me a bunch of clothes in a size 4 that I'll hopefully fit into soon! Right now, my 2s are too big. My goal is to someday get back into a size 6/7 and look like my old self. My sad pout resulted in a new winter wardrobe.
Anyway, it appears as if I have turned my celiac thread into my own journal of off topic ramblings that I'm sure none of you care about over here. lol. Off to prepare for my presentation for tomorrow. God bless you all.Last edited by gazaleh; November 10, 2006, 01:23 AM.

Re: Celiac
Not all Celiacs are boney armed, or thin. I could only say "I WISH" lol It's suspected I may have it, but with no health insurance I couldn't even get that tested. I was able to meet with someone about it, but since I didn't have insurance no testig could be done. I could also just be gluten intolerant. I know eating wheat feels as if I ate razor blades. Horrible feeling.
