    Re: Celiac

I know this is an old thread..but a lot of people have Celiac also..and dont know it. The estimate is 1 in 133 Americans have it but are undiagnosed. Theres a blood test but rather unreliable..only true test is a biopsy of the intestines.
My drs refused to test me...because i was overweight (drs in this country especially KNOW NOTHING!) It took me many drs..and finally got a biopsy and it was positive.Hmmph. Not knowing can eventually lead to various cancers of the digestive tract.
Atkins diet works really well with the celiac diet...just have to avoid hidden gluten in certain seasonings, salad dressings, soy sauce, etc. But its worth it. Part of gaining your overall health back.

      Re: Celiac

Indy, I didn't know the blood tests were unreliable. I just got mine back and they were fine. My GI said I didn't need another EGD because my gastroparesis is under control, but I am getting a Colonoscopy done with biopsies. I thought to test for Celiac you had to have biopsies of the small intestine? If they can't find a cause for my diarrhea, I will request that they do an EGD with biopsies. Maybe I should call my doctor and ask for it to be done next Monday when I have my colonoscopy.........Dawn

        Re: Celiac

        Hi Dawn,
My blood work came back fine also..it wasnt until having my second EGD that i insisted they take a sample to test for celiac (frm small intestines)..then it came back positive. (tell-tale flattened villi)...i also had a colonoscopy done at the same time. I had chronic diarrhea too (but no weight loss, darnit)..and a bunch of other things that i thought were unrelated.
You can also just avoid gluten and see how u feel. A lot of people are sensitive to it. If its not that, I hope u at least find whats wrong. I hate when you know something aint right but they (drs) tell u youre fine. Good luck to u..let me know how it goes!

          Re: Celiac

Just thought I'd bump this thread...

My mom was diagnosed last week as celiac, and I was tested, too. I'm still waiting for my official results (though I'm not sure they'll tell me anything I don't know) from the blood test. I've been noticing problems with wheat for a while, sometimes symptoms are nonexistant, sometimes they are not too bothersome, sometimes they are a real pain.

I've been having noticeable issues with wheat/gluten for over a year now, and though celiac came up in my research, I eliminated it as a possibility because I wasn't underweight. Now I know that a person does not have to be wasting or losing weight or underweight to have celiac disease or gluten intolerance.

Today is gluten-free day #2 for me. It's really not that much different than lower rungs of Atkins, but you have to double-check all your foods just in case. I found out yesterday that the brand of frozen cauliflower I've been eating for a year is manufactured in a facility that processes wheat. OOPS.

So, is there anyone else out there who is celiac or gluten-intolerant?
