  • Atkins and the Inflammation Diet

Anyone familiar with the inflammation diet? Inflammation is what I have a problem with. Well, it dawned on me that this past week on Atkins and all the extra exercise I've done- and I'm not hurting! Now I also drink tart cherry juice for my inflammation and swear by it (so much so that I'm not giving it up on Atkins), but even with that when I exercise I feel the pain and usually have to "give up" after a few short days. Anyway, I was doing some research on the internet and ran across this inflammation diet and it mentioned some things that cause inflammation in people and wheat was on the list. And - guess what? I had the Elisa/Act test done in 2001 and it said I had a food sensitivity to wheat . . . but I never followed through with the elimnation of it from my diet until 2003 when I did Atkins the first time around. Unfortunately at the time I had tons of stress in my life, which is no longer there (not the tons anyway), and I wasn't drinking the cherry juice and I didn't see a big difference in my joint/muscle pain. I saw a difference, but not as big as I'm seeing this time! It's funny . . . so many people will say Atkins isn't good for you - but apparently don't realize that so many of the other diets just follow Dr. Atkins thoughts. WW stresses low-carb and so does Dr. Phil's diet. People think of Atkins and they think it is NO carb - which it really isn't. Anyway I said all this jibber-jabber just to say that I feel great on Atkins!

Anyone else find that eliminating bread and other wheat-carbs helps with joint/muscle pain?

That's so fascinating Gina. Really pleased you feel better on Atkins!
Isn'tit amazing the things we learn about how we react to certain foods on this way of eating? This is just another little nail in the Atkins naysayers coffin!
    Thanks for posting.

      http://www.wheatanddairyfree.com/whe...tolerances.htm

      article in part:

A wheat or gluten intolerance can be difficult to diagnose. As it is such a common food the body adapts to coping with it, hiding the intolerance. Some of the symptoms which a wheat or gluten intolerance produces are: aches and stiffness, depression and mood swings, anxiety, asthma, fatigue/tiredness, sneezing, runny eyes, runny nose, nausea, bloating, stomach cramps, sweating, sore/itchy throat, skin rashes, swollen stomach. Diagnosis can be difficult.

Excluding wheat or gluten from the diet to see if there is any improvement in health is the most effective way to diagnose an intolerance. The food item can be reintroduced after a few weeks to observe any reaction.

I've noticed that my allergies arn't acting up so bad the last three weeks, but it could be the weather (no pollen). I did get tested for Crones and Celiac's because I was having so many problems, but those tests came back negative. So I might just have a simple wheat allergy. I'll find out when I get to the whole grains rung.

I found that my asthma and allergies improved when I started Atkins. I also found that wheat and certain wheat-based products make my asthma and allergy symptoms act up.

There is an excellent book by Dr. Fred Pescatore about asthma and allergies that explains this better. Dr. Pescatore worked with Dr. Atkins.

I remembered you saying !!! ...I never put it together until the past few months...my eyes water and I sneeze like crazy about 2 hours after eating bread or any wheat products .....probably the reason I never noticed it because I always equate allergic reaction with "quick get the epi!!!" it is a delayed reaction for sure of some kind ... because Lord knows... I have tested it ..too many times

Heidi, I also noticed that wheat makes me bloat too. That might explain all the mild indigestion I used to have....

Megs I was completely shocked when I realized that it was the wheat making me sneeze!!! The first couple of times when I was testing my food bountaries...I did not relate it as I said because it was so delayed..then I remember your mentioning it one time ..I told my husband when I had some four tortillas and he did not believe it ... a little over an hour after eating them I had watery eyes and a sneeze attack! Tried it again ..same thing ....he is convinced and I am convinced ....I am for sure sensitive to wheat ...and would have never known if I had not done this whole Atkins thing you know

Re: Atkins and the Inflammation Diet

I'm aboard the USS Shocked with you, Heidi. My asthma and allergies greatly improved. When I finally got to the grains rung, I started to introduce whole wheat in the form of crackers. It didn't mess up my loss, but I noticed I was wheezing alittle and my nose would be alittle congested. At first I thought "well, maybe I'm getting a cold" or "maybe I over-did my exercise", etc. When I was trying out oats, I stopped wheezing. Again, I didn't think anything about it. But I began to notice everytime I ate whole wheat, I'd wheeze and my nose would get alittle runny. And every time I didn't eat whole wheat, I wouldn't wheeze or have a nose problems.

The bloating I noticed when I attended an Afternoon Tea party for a friend. I managed to dodge most of the carby foods (which ain't easy at afternoon tea!), but I did have 2 finger sandwiches. Wheezing, sniffles and a bloaty feeling that didn't go away for a week!

I am ever astounded at what we do to ourselves unknowingly and knowingly

Megs I know if I eat this stuff it makes me feel like crap ..but sometimes I just do ..and then go figure ..I feel crappy ....I am glad that there are so many choices of foods to eat....I just love white sugar and flour but they are so bad for our bodies ....kind of sucks but the trade off for good health is worth it I think ...

True, but the one bright spot is we can eat stuff other people can't/won't. Like during Afternoon Tea, fat-phobes took care not to use too much Clotted Cream on their scones. I ate the Clotted Cream off a spoon--unabashedly!

Thanks for these posts! I'm not to the whole grains rung, but I will be in a couple months. Now I know what to look for--I never would have thought that sneezing and watery eyes would signal a sensitivity...I mean, I probably would have overlooked it as a cold or something.

                        Thanks for the info, ladies!

It's listed in the "Blood Sugar Symptom Test" in Chapter 12. But it's number 39 out of 49 symptoms, so it's easily overlooked.

I highly suspect, but haven't tested my theory enough yet, that wheat products make me bloat. I've just got to get myself on a steady losing streak again, not close to TOM without a change in my exercise to test it under controlled circumstances.
