  • Water in - water out imbalance

Since I began to drink 160oz of water a day routinely I have become increasingly worried about my water in - water out imbalance. In a nutshell, I just don't pee enough.

I've started taking real notice lately and for every 8 English pints (160oz) that goes in I am getting less than 2 pints out.

I've discussed it with a few friends this week and each reckons it simply isn't right. They pee more than I do and they are not on Atkins and have only 2 or 3 pints of liquid a day.

When I look down at the enormous bloated body I am now wondering how much of this is water that I am retaining and not excreting? A fortnihgt ago I bought some herbal water tablets (dandelion) but they have had no effect whatsoever.

I'm a bit anti-drugs and anti-doctors, but I would get medicine for this if it could improve my mobility by making me lose weight.

Has anyone else had this, and what did you do about it?

Are you eating a lot of salt? that could cause you to retain water!

Well it depends on what you mean by "a lot". I do sprinkle salt on all my meat, of course - don't we all?

Maybe if I totally gave up salt for a week and see if I go to the bathroom more often....?

Re: Water in - water out imbalance

remind me helena, are you diabetic? i was reading that the ratio imbalance might be due ot that. it was medical language so i'm not quite sure of that.

if it's bothering you, i could suggest just making a phone call to your G P and asking about this. i was also reading that the imbalance could mean a medical problem. try looking at the wikipedia site for some info.

I guess i do drink a lot of water, and i dont think i pee anywhere near as much as i drink, but i dont feel bloated so i dont have a problem with that, the body has to retain something for my tears and sweat from exercising, hehe

Re: Water in - water out imbalance

ummm.. I don't measure how much I pee... but keep in mind that it's also used for sweating and keeping your body going in general. If you're sweating more than your friends (like, when you're doing your water aerobics), then you're not going to be peeing as much since that's going to be using up your water. Then again, I don't eat much salt (I don't add it to anything), or bacon, sausage, pork rinds, etc.

Helena, this may sound a gross question, but when you do pee, what colour is it?

I suffer from hyperinsulinaemia, which is more or less the opposite of diabetes.

[You are very lucky if you can talk to your GP. Here the receptionists won't put calls through and it is almost impossible to get an appointment. They are not permitted to book a day in advance, and they tell you to "phone at 8.45am to make an appointment for that same day." When you phone at 8.44am you get an answerphone and when you phone at 8.45am you get the engaged signal through to about 9.30am. When you finally get through they tell you all the appointments are gone, call back tomorrow. I have submitted an official complaint, but there is a waiting list for that, too! Gosh Rich, that's such a gross question. :P

To add to it though, when you answer that question, could you also answer whether you're taking many vitamins? It skews colour.

try to work around this somehow perhaps by using the internet. there are sites , i am sure that will take questions and medical professionals will get back with you via email. i've done this in the past when my mom developed macular degeneration.

Lyssie - how can you tell if you are sweating underwater LOL? I have always been considered very weird by all my friends because I never seem to sweat. Even when I used to play badminton I used to just get redder, and hotter, and redder and hotter, and they used to worry I was going to explode like a pressure cooker. The only bit of me that sweats is my feet.

Rich - changes during the day from orange to almost clear. It's never completely clear, even after having four pints in an hour, say.

BTW I don't find the human body or its natural functions "gross". It's Mother Nature, and she is beautiful!
