  • I'm a Diet Coke Addict

Dr. Atkins recommends only 3 servings of artificial sweetners per day, and aspartame is known to stall a large portion of the population...

For anyone who doesn't know, I've been a 2-litre-a-day of Diet Coke girl pretty much since August.

Kicking this habit is tough, especially when the taste, the caffeine and the bubbles are all so marvellous and it doesn't seem to stall me.

Still, caffeine causes other problems, and the caramel color in DC makes the beverage not wholly carb-free (120 ounces is a carb), it causes blood pressure issues (not low in sodium), and the caffeine wreaks havok on the blood stream, brain chemicals and cholestrol levels, as well as blood pressure.

Stopping from having it will be tough. It's something I just really love to have!

Thought I'd share that everyone has addictions and issues we're all fighting. None of us are perfect, but we're all striving towards health in the best ways that we can.

Now if only water tasted like Diet Coke... :joy

Cleo, I feel your pain :sympathy

Even though I never drank that much, I still want a DC everyday. I would drink Diet Rite but I can't find it here in Utah. ???

It's so hard to give that up for water! :bang I have to negotiate with myself though. I don't allow myself to have anything other than water until I have drank (drinken?) 4 liters in the day.

Sometimes by then, I'm tired of drinking LOL :tounge Think of DC as a treat or reward. I guarantee you'll appreciate it more.... or like me, you will get to where you don't think about it much anymore :ThumbsUp

          Cleo,
Diet coke has always been my soda of choice until recently. I have had a few since starting Atkins, but not nearly as much. I noticed how much weight you have lost, and you have lost all this weight while drinking so much diet coke? I am just curious, that's all. I guess it goes to show that everyone's different when losing weight on Atkins.

I weaned myself off Diet coke by switching to the caffeine free version first.

I went through a very long winded process of first of all mixing the two in the same glass and then gradually putting in more of the caffeine free type.

That achieved I then started alternating one glass of pop for one glass of water.

I now drink just water at home, but will drink diet coke if out out of the house, but I always ask for the decaf if theyve got it...

So ive not banned it altogether....

awww Cleo LOL :hug I loved Diet Coke too, and I lived on the caffeine free stuff for years before starting this WOE (I quit caffeine about 7 years ago). When I first started I tried Diet Rite cola which tasted like crap to me compared to Diet Coke. I did discover I didn't mind the white grape or tangerine with a little cream added to it, so I stuck with those but mostly I drank water. After a couple months the diet rite cola didn't taste so bad and recently I discovered diet coke now tastes like crap LOL. Go figure

I think that food additions like diet coke are absolutely the worst to try to give up. BUT Cleo, my friend and buddy, diet coke has to be the WORST thing for your health.....look at the label while you are drinking those things, its all garbage and it wouldn't surprize me at all if I didn't read some day that there is something additive that they put in the bubbles just to increase sales. Hey, the tabacco industry did it, why not Coke!!

By the way, congratulations on your 100 pounds, that is absolutely awesome and I think we'll throw a party for all of you who have done such a great job.

It is hard to break addictions ... that's why we're all here .. cuz we're recovering carboholics. :hug

Can I suggest you try seltzer water?? Nothing in it but carbonated water and natural flavoring (no sweetener). That got me through many a craving for something bubbly ...

Hang in there hon .. you have conquered the carb beast and you can conquer this beast too ..

                        Hi Cleo!

I used to drink about a case of this stuff (DC) a week before Atkins! :yikes

Then I finally just made a firm choice to get off of it gradually. I weaned myself down to two a day and then I began to substitute mineral water with lemon slices and cut out the DC. The carbonation in the mineral water helped me get the carbonation that I loved so much in the DC, but without actually cheating.

At first you really miss it...BADLY...but then the water becomes a habit (which is a good habit)...If fact, about two weeks ago I took a sip of my hubby's diet coke (duh! WHY did I even do that???) Well, I almost gagged because it tasted SO incredibly gross to me! Here I was hooked on the stuff before...now it tastes horrible to me!

The DC also was totally stalling my weight loss....So knowing this helped me give it up. Hang in there! It can be done...I was a total DC addict before...Now I am DC free!

                        :hug

So, Cleo, how is it going. I have decided that I am addicted to sweets. If you give up the diet coke, Ill give up the splenda. WOW, I can't believe I said that. How about one week and then we will renegotiate LOL

                            OK, desert, you're on!

I'm drinking water now and got about an hour of sleep last night due to thinking I could down a little DC after days without any appreciable amount.

An hour! Holy crap. I dead cleo walking this morning. I'm drinking oregano water.

So color me three shades of on boardness.
