I know that feeling...my husband's mother is naturally underweight and her and her husband would constantly talk about overweight people and put them down -- and make comments to me about my weight (hurt my feelings). My husband has mentioned that he has seen me in the past eat 800 - 1,200 calories a day and gain weight -- but I don't think it sinks in with them -- they act like I eat all day. However, since that time I found out that I had PCOS and the cause of the weight gain so I don't feel discouraged anymore. I know there is help through this low-carb lifestyle and exercise. My dr told me that if a person will lose a little weight their body tries to normalize its hormones. So, I'm sticking with it and hopefully will get healthy again.

If you have any questions about anything around here on the forum, let me know and I'll try to help.

          Re: Calling all PCOSisters...

kkat55, I totaly relate to what you said... truth is, its so easy for some people to blame others or to make them feel awful when it comes to weight issues.. they always act that this weight gain is a self-induced thing, not accepting the fact that there are other reasons that could cause weight gain other than over-indulging on food .. *sigh*

my parents do the same thing... they always nag about this.. and some of the girls I work with are underweight, and whenever I'm around, they start discussing weight and food or whenever they have their breakfast gatherings, one of them would call me up and say "we're gathering for breakfast... are you dieting?" and that would drive me insane.. but I put a cool face and say that I've already had my breakfast...

some people are just so insensetive and inconsiderate..

          anyways... enough about that

how long have you been on Atkins?
I'm starting tomorrow, so wish me luck

            Re: Calling all PCOSisters...

            Hey Miss World!

            Thanks for your sweet post!

I've re-started Induction July 10 (I believe) and am currently on the nuts rung. So that puts me at about two months and one week. Of course, I've started this program in the past and only stayed on Induction, which was a mistake for me; especially when my husband was doing it with me. He was getting tired of the foods and it was hard for him to take stuff for lunch. However, now that I'm moving up the rungs of ongoing weight loss (OWL) he seems interested in trying this again.

I've lost about 16 pounds so far and considering the PCOS I'm taking this as a good sign. Anything is better than gaining all the time and if I stick with it; next year should be at goal with all this behind me and over with.

I'm wishing you the best on your journey to better health!!

*Yaaaaay* you will reach goal, I know you will...
I've started today and later I'm going to the gym .. I do hope I don't get a carb-addict headache like I'm used to if I don't have my dose of pepsi.. God! I hate how addicted I am to this stuff *sigh*

got a question ... can we have chewing gum? I love BigRed but its got carbs that I probably don't need to get from gum! I found this other type of gum that is sugarfree and semi-carb free I guess... its made from Olimanum gum .. this is how it looks in its original form

ofcourse it is mixed in a certain way to create chewing gum.. I'll take pictures later of the ones I have at home ...

but if I'm not supposed to have gum at all.. so be it I'm going to re-read the book again to try and find more about this too.. not sure if chewing gum was mentioned.. I have memory issues

                Re: Calling all PCOSisters...

Hi, I was diagnosed with PCOS three years ago, my weight had balooned to 15stones, thats about 214lbs for you US ladies. I didnt put it down as unexplained weight gain because I was eatign constantly. I went to the doctors crying becuase I was convinced I was sick, I was CONSTANTLY hungry, I was gettignup at 3am to eat and then go back to bed. Partially I am a compulsive overeater anyway, but this was beyond a joke. My gair had started to thin on my head, I had heavy down on my cheeks and lips, acne, and hair on my belly and round my nipples. I felt like the yeti woman. I was convinced i was sick, you know like REALLY sick

I got the appointment at the doctors crying, saying I've eaten 8 rolls (buns/baps) and corned beef today, plus a 6" pizza, a bag of chips (fries) and this was only 5 pm, I was still going home for dinner and I was still hungry, Im abnormal, I need stomach stapling, jaw wiring or something. he took one look at me, looked at my skin which was a raging mess of raised red acne sores and said. Have you ever been tested for PCOS?

I'd never even heard of it. So tests done that day, results two weeks later. I have PCOS. My testosterone was through the roof, put on the pill and then taken off it as I was at risk of stroke because of migraines.

Now its just me and my diet against PCOS.
                210/200/140

                Lost 10lbs during induction
                3rd week - Stall
                4th week - 4lbs gain

Need to keep going. PCOS sufferer

Hope your trip to the gym turned out good! Great way to up that metabolism!

You can probably have chewing gum sweetened with Splenda (like Blitz), but you are only allowed three sweetners a day so each piece would count as one of your sweets per day. (We are not allowed aspartame and regular sugars are out.) Hope this helps when you plan your meals.

Here's wishing you a great start on the program!!

                        Hi everyone,
I was just told that I had PCOS..so i don't know what to think . My doctor told me about this website, and that it is a great place for talking about it with other women just like me. I am only in highschool still, so this PCOS + school is a big stress combo to take in - not to mention the big challenge of dieting to add to it!
Well I just wanted to say hello, and maybe get some advice.

                          Re: Calling all PCOSisters...

                          Hi Pumpkin,

I'm new here too but I've been diagnised with PCOS since 2000. You are in a good place here! There is a lot of advice and support but most importantly, information.

How were you diagnosed? By scan or by blood tests for androgens/hormones? Have you also had your blood sugar and thyroide tested? These things can go hand-in-hand and I should know, I'm PCOS/Insulin Resistant (IR)/Hyperinsulanaemic (HI) and am having thyroid treatment.

Losing weight for 'Cysters is harder than normal but crucial to rebalancing things . Also question your doctor if he has put you on the Pill to 'normalise' things. While that is true, it also puts the body in a state of false pregnancy and what body believeing it is pregnant is going to want to shed weight??

Also, this makes it impossible to profile your hormones which means you are not actually able to treat PCOS, just 'manage' it.

I am getting the advice of a naturopath with whom my doctor is willing to work so I've gone off the Pill and we are going to start trying to help my body normalise itself instead of medicating the symptoms.

                          Hope this helps!

                            Re: Calling all PCOSisters...

                            Thanks Singadiva,
I found out i had PCOS just last month through a blood test. All my life i have had symptomes of it and didn't even know it. I knew that something was wrong especialy when i saw that i was just not as "normal" as the other girls at school..
but one day I finally asked about it and they did a blood test for testostrone, thyroid, and other things that i can't quite remember.. but that is when it was a for sure thing that i did have it. It also made sense though because my mom also has it, but her symptomes are different from mine. Soon i need to have an ultrasound so they can see if any damage has been done yet, but because they caught it early hopefully there won't be.

About the pill, my doctor talked to me about that and i decided that i don't want to take it because although it may atleast hide the symptomes, she said that there is a good chance that it may make me gain alot of weight, which i would be alot happier without.

So basicly..im just waiting becuase in order for the medication that my doctor does want to put me on to work, i have to loose loose a little bit more weight. Until then, i guess there is nothing much to do. :-/

                            Thanx again <3

I assume your doctor is talking about putting you on Metformin or Diabex?

My advice to you is to get into the Atkins Induction and don't look back! Giving up sugar and learning to put nothing but fresh whole foods in your diet will give you the best possible chance of living a normal healthy life at a perfect weight for you.

The smartest thing you can do for yourself is make sure this situation doesn't rule you but that you rule it - the way to do that is to be as informed as possible and have a plan of action to work to.

                              Good luck!

                                Hello Ladies

I have PCOS with ALL its symptoms. They are somewhat better at a low weight, but I still dont get menses on time without insulin sensitisers and low carb diet.

I cant take metformin due to lots of side effects but I take herbal insulin sensitisers and they work very well without all the ill effects

                                Im starting induction today

I hope to lose around 50 lbs on atkins and get healthy!
