  • Left Side Sleeping...

I had my Dr. appointment yesterday, including an ultrasound. While the technician was doing my ultrasound she asked if I was making sure to get plenty of fluids and sleeping on my left side. I thought about how I sleep and told her I sleep on my left side every night.

After I got home, I realized I lied to her. I always sleep on my RIGHT side, not my left. Is there a reason that I should be sleeping on my left side? (It's really uncomfortable).

As far as my appointment goes, they were able to confirm its a boy They said he already weighs 3 pounds 2 ounces (at 30 weeks). My blood presure looked good, and my glucose test results were excellent.

I start my 2 week appointments on the 21st and will have a monthly u/s to check baby's growth. The doc said in a month she would also like to start NMS (NNS, NSS something close to that, if anyone knows please let me know!) testing. She said it checks the fluid to make sure its not damaging the baby, and it's testing they always do if there's hypertension.

All in all it was a good visit. Sounds to me like I've got a large baby...

Although there's no real harm in sleeping on your right side, lying on your left side is actually good for you and your baby: It improves the flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta and it helps your kidneys efficiently eliminate waste products and fluids from your body. That, in turn, reduces swelling in your ankles, feet, and hands. If you train yourself to sleep on your left side early on, you'll have an easier time falling asleep when your belly is bulging later.

During the second half of pregnancy, avoid sleeping on your back, a position that puts the full weight of your uterus on your spine, back muscles, intestines, and the inferior vena cava (the vein that transports blood from your lower body to the heart). Back-sleeping can also put you at risk for backaches and hemorrhoids, inefficient digestion, and impaired breathing and circulation. Lying on your back in the second and third trimester can also cause changes in blood pressure. For some women, it can cause a drop in blood pressure that can make them feel dizzy; for others, it can cause an unwanted increase in blood pressure.

woo hoo for you! A Boy!!! have you picked a name yet? Glad your blood sugars and pressures are doing so well.

Now that you know why you should be on that side put some pillows behind you while you get as comfortable as possible on your left side and then you can roll back on the other side.

Lying on your left side is best, especially if your blood pressure is elevated. It is usually much better while lying on your left side..
And the test they are gonna do.. maybe a NST?.. non stress test.

            Re: Left Side Sleeping...

I'm currently 29 weeks pregnant and I find that when I lie on my left side, I feel more pressure and I can feel him move ALOT more than on my right side. For comfort sake, I tend to sleep on my right side, but if i'm just laying in bed relaxing, i'll go with the left side. Unfortunately, I'm normally a back/stomach sleeper, so occassionally when I find myself sleeping on my back, my lower back will KILL as soon as I get up......I need those bumper things that they use at the bowling alley for bumper bowling to keep me on my sides lol
