  • Exclusively Pumping and needing to lose weight.

I know it says I shouldn' do the induction phase while lactating but I don't lose weight when I am not on the induction phase so what can I do?

I need to lose at least half of me but want to start of with just losing at least 50-100.

I was even trying a low cal diet but that wasn't working either and I am a compulsive journaler with writitng down what I eat and how many calories as well as how many net carb even.

Any thoughts or ideas on how I can do this safely?!

first talk with the childs doc and yours you wil be using about 500 cals a day to supple the childs nourshment and that is your fist priority right now you only get one chance to grow that little one right. you get a life time to shrink you! Once you are no longer the childs primary sourse of nutrition then it is safe to start your weight loss program and induction will be waiting for you.

    Happy low carbing

Might not wanna hear it, but its true, you have a lifetime to lose the weight you need to lose...your children are sooooooooooo important, so please for the sake of their health, dont do something that may be harmful...even if you were to breastfeed for two years, its ONLY two years, its so easy to jump back on the Atkins Wagon....Im not a doctor, so ask yours about it...I know I will be breast feeding this little one, like I did my others and although Id do just about anything to lose weight, im waiting....NO im not perfect, but just concerned...thats all.... :hug

Well I know according to the LLL you can safely lose weight while nursing as long as you keep it to 1-2 pounds week and no more.

I don't really have a doctor per se since we practice unassisted pregnancy and childbirth (UC/UP). I did have some OB shadow care with this last one because I chose to, but he was quack. The MW friend I see is all up for me losing some weight, and since we will be TTC again for bab #6 in the fall I wanted to lose some of this weight so I could try to eliminate some of the health risks I had last time.

Both b/f and weight loss are extremely personal issues. How long are you hoping to b/f? How long were you able to with your others? When do you hope to add solids? How many calories are you consuming, and what are your ratios? Have you lost or gained any weight since leaving the hospital? Have you had any supply issues? Have you gone back to work yet? Do you know what your CCCL is or how to estimate it?

All of these are questions I would be asking myself. LLL does advocate NATURAL weight loss, which means: eating enough to maintain your weight, but since you are nursing, burning an extra 500 calories a day.

Think it out, and let me know if you want some help with controlled carb maintenance menus, I have had a BLAST on maintenance so far!
What is it, a RACE? It's coming off, right????

How long are you hoping to b/f? As long as I can, and I am just pumping not nursing directly because of breast issues. I have always said I might stop when AF comes back.

How long were you able to with your others? #1 and #2 I only did it for a few weeks and quit, #3 I BF naturally for 13 month w/o problems, #4 I breastfed thorugh immense pain and came out with nipple trauma in the end and quit BF when he was about 5mo old, 2 weeks after quitting I found out I was pregnant again with #5 and I attempted to BF naturally but ti wasn't in the cards and have been exclusively pumping since he was born practically.

When do you hope to add solids? When he seems ready to.

How many calories are you consuming, and what are your ratios? I don't know what you mean by ratios but I had been trying to keep my caloric intake to about 1200 or so.

Have you lost or gained any weight since leaving the hospital? I never left the hospital since I gave birth at home unassisted. However since I gave birth I had lost 41 pounds from my final pregnany weight, but this is only a guestimat since my own scale at home only went up to 300 and it wasn't registaring my weight at the end. since that weight loss I had gained 10 over the holidays and now have lost 15 since then.

Have you had any supply issues? Even after being on the atkins diet I am still producing more milk than what my baby is consuming in a day.

Have you gone back to work yet? I never left work since I am a SAHM of 5 children, and Ihomeschool

Do you know what your CCCL is or how to estimate it? No clue what it is so I guess I don't know how to calculate it.

Think it out, and let me know if you want some help with controlled carb maintenance menus, I have had a BLAST on maintenance so far!

Yes I'd like whatever help you can offer. That's why I am here!

2big is right. I trust your baby is thriving at your current caloric level. You have lost 15lbs since the holidays? That seems very extreme to me and will definitely affect your supply and quality of your milk.

You are at 1200 cals a day right now, I don't think you can POSSIBLY go any lower than that and not affect your health, baby's health, milk supply. You can of course cut out all sugar and white flour totally safely, they have no redeeming qualities at all.

My cals go way over 1200, but here is what I've been eating these days (my CCCL is very high):

2 egg and cheddar omelet w/1 slice whole grain toast (sara lee's heart healthy brands are high in fiber and pretty moderate carb, low in sugar), 1 cup strawberries.

                sliced turkey snack, grapes

homemade chili w/beef, beans, peppers and tomatos, sour cream, handful stone ground corn chips, small salad w/good leafy greens, milk

hot tea and flax muffin (it is SO cold here right now!)

meat loaf (no fillers)or chicken breast w/mushroom sauce, green beans, spaghetti squash w/parm and butter, milk

LC ice cream or egg nog, grapes, or all natural peanut butter on celery on toast.

I think my growing baby needs the balance this variety provides, w/beans, fruits, grains, veggies, dairy. Induction does not provide that.

I hope my thoughts have helped you. You seem very dedicated to b/f your baby, I know how much extra effort pumping must be w/4 other kids too! If you want to continue, breast milk is best. BUT, if you want to focus on weight loss, you may need to consider formula so you are not robbing your baby of nutrients.

My milk supply has actually been increasing instead of decreasing. Like I said I am producing more than what he can consume and I have a growing stash of EMB now in the freezer and my sister's freezer.

My now almost 15wk old son is weighing in at 15-16 pounds, double his birth weight now. I don't think switching to formula would be better nutrients at all. BM is far more superior to formula any old day with or without dieting. There are always multi-vitamins. I am well versed in pregnancy, birth and BF.

I'm not trying to do a rapid loss but I also don't want to stay this weight for when we are ready to TTC again.

I still don'y know what CCCL is. No one's explaned this to me yet.

CCLL is critical carb level for losing and you want your carbs to be below that as you lose weight on Atkins. it is an individual number based on your body metabolism and your activitiy level. Mine when I workout is over 110 some folk have only 30 as theirs.

I do just want to say I understand that you do not have a "doctor" per say and we can only give you advise. It would be a good idea to check with a professional and follow what they say.

As you stated the LLL said it was "ok" for weight loss 1-2 lbs weekly. They are talking about a balanced diet which is pretty much the MAINTENANCE PHASE of Atkins. If you are burning more than you are putting in there is a chance of weight loss. I don't think the others were talking about the amount of milk they were talking about the "quality" of the milk. It is a very fine line. You have to be getting enough nutrients for yourself and the milk.

I have figured my CCLL was about 100. But I am trying to conceive and had time before we decided to do so. So I went thru induction, OWL and ruffly guessed on my CCLL to get me out of ketosis. Once I hit that mark that is what I have stuck with. I do eat balanced just don't eat the "junk" stuff and stay away from the white flour and sugars. Now I am not sure of the studies on Splenda there is so much about this good/bad I am not sure where I stand on this.
