I really think it's imperative to check breastmilk for ketone level on a daily basis if nursing while on a low carb diet. This is easily done with ketsostix. Drinking very large amounts of water would help make the amount of ketones small, but breastmilk still should be checked because the consequences are so negative for the baby.
Children are so small and ketone ingestion in breastmilk sets up a vicious circle of nausea and vomiting which makes ingesting liquids to get rid of ketones impossible for the child. Hospitalization becomes unavoidable to get the liquids to allow the child to urinate out the ketones.
One needs to be especially vigilant if the baby is getting an illness, particularly of the GI variety. Things can go bad very fast.
