AngelicaA NO don't stop keep eating what you want to eat. your doc will titrate your meds over the next yr to match your life style. You should be going back for another blood test to see if your current med level is the correct one for you and then a follow up blood test for that too. it takes about a yr to get it all worked out right and then yrly level tests for the rest of your life.

Yes you would have lost faster if your thyroid hormon levels had been normal. thyriod hormones are sort of like the throttle controls on an engine the more you got the better the every cell's engine burns. better burn more fuel burned up and our fuel is our foods eaten and our body storage fats.

Thanks 2Big!! I am relieved to hear this.

I am starting to feel relieved that at least now, I know what it is. I was feeling so tired all the time...It didn't matter how much I slept!! And depressed too.

Thank you for your input and hopefully, this weight will come off a little better.

Felix, I'm glad you're losing some weight and know how frusturating it is being hypo myself. I have started taking Coconut Oil and it seems to be helping. I think you should give it a whirl. If you are going to get the Virgin Organic Coconut oil it's awesome. I have taken it for about 7 days now and have lost 3 pounds after not losing for 3 weeks. I know it's the coconut oil nothing elese is different. I have been doing a lot of reading and it is supposed to be good for Cadida as well as Thyroid Function. I was skeptical now I am hooked. PM me ok we'll chat do you have MSN

My thyroid levels are always within normal levels. I took Synthroid from age 16 till just a few years ago when I read Mary Shomon's book and asked my Doc to switch me to Armour. I take 90mg daily. If you've read her book you know the laundry list of symptoms. I had many of them, even when my levels were normal (joint pain, constipation, difficulty sleeping, dry skin, thinning hair, brittle nails, irritability... just to name the most bothersome).

I haven't really paid much attention to the dietary restrictions she recommends because I'm just not ready to give up the veggies I enjoy so much. Maybe I need to reconsider that. I've identified other reasons for my slowed weight loss.. mostly eating too many calories and the occasional binge that can set me back a week sometimes. Even after all this time that food demon still shows his nasty little head sometimes. Right now although I'd love to lose between now and the new year, realistically I'll be doing great if my weight stays the same and I don't gain. My good intentions have been just that... intentions. I've blown it a few too many times in the past 2 weeks. I'm trying to stick to Induction foods only on most days but with all the parties going on I've been drinking wine and indulging in the foods and treats that have been all too available. I tell myself I'm not going to do it and then once I start I can't stop. I guess I should be posting this in the emotional eating / binge forum.

Anyway.... perhaps after the holidays are over I'll do some writing and planning and maybe pay more attention to Mary's thyroid diet recommendations. Right now I just want to make it through the holidays without gaining.

OMG. I am getting to the Doc first thing next week. Do most people have to stay on meds once they are diagnosed? Or does it ever get better?

yes you have to take your meds for the rest of your life unless you took some drugs or chemicals that interferred with your thyroid and your levles will recover. However if that was the case they don't ususally give you thyroid meds to take as as your thyroid recovered your level would go to high.

Your thyroid has stopped producing enough of the hormone every cell in your body needs for metabolism you can die from low thyroid it isn't some diease you can have when you want to move your weight loss and ignore when you don't. You don't need to worry about the veggies and other foods. they are posted on the groitrogen topic in this thyroid forum.

As long as you eat them consistanly your medication level will be titrated with you eating them and their interferance will be countered already. That is why it is called a life style decision. your meds will be fixed for you to fit your food choices. You should be having regular rechecks to make sure you are at the level that is right for you.

If like Amy you body has trouble converting the T4 to the active T3 form then you may need some of the meds containing T3 too, otherwise you will just get levoxyl or sythriod, same med just different manufacturer. This is one of the reasons you need a full thyroid panel so your doc can determine what type of hypothyroid you have primary or secondary as the treatments are different.

Keeping in mind what 2Big has said, if your levels are regulated, and you've been on your meds for awhile, ADDING veggies and foods that mess with your thyroid could cause a problem. And I dont know about you guys, but when my levels are off, I'm a raging mess! From emotional to physical side effects. So for me, my Synthroid was upped when I first started Atkins, and I dont go messing around adding stuff I really wasn't eating in the beginning, just in case. I don't wanna be throwing my levels off cuz I wanted some cabbage everyday for a week...

                      Any Advice?

                      Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with hashimotos thyroiditis on June 1st this year, and am still working on getting my levels regulated, they are all over the place even tho I am up to 125mcg of synthroid already! I had previously tried atkins in January and had not much success (maybe my thyroid was out then too). I have to lose almost 300lbs to get to my goal and am feeling very overwhelmed and frustrated at this point in time. Is atkins right for me once I get my levels regulated? and what do I do in the interim?

Its great to find this forum and know that there are others in this boat with me!

                      Thanks, Shazzer
                      Tomorrow is another day!

welcome. you start eating your Atkins induction. As your levels come back to normal the scales will move. in the mean time you will be getting the rest of your body healthy by eating all those veggies and getting rid of the junk food.

Did your Doc warn you about the different OTC meds that can mess up your thyroid hormones too like sudaphed? If not you need to talk with him about that and other things that can effect your thyroid that you never thought of. Educate yourself on thyroid. Stay away from the sites trying to seel you stuff and just look at the science stuff like the goitrogen foods and the meds. I was lucky or I have a very skilled doc cause the first level he picked for my meds was the right one and i've been bang on every retest except when I was taking the roids for the allergic reaction.

Thanks for posting that list of foods, Felix.

With all the symptoms I've been having for the past 5 or 6 years and with what I've been reading from all of you here on this board, I'm not going to accept that my thyroid is ok without better testing.

Here's the results from one of my old tests. From the looks of it, my T3 wasn't checked and all of you guys have mentioned that's important.

I couldn't get an appointment with a doctor but I've got an appointment with a "practioner" later this week.
