  • Re: Hypothyroid ADBBers roll call

I am extremely Hypothyroid. I just had my third child and the docs are once again trying to get me regulated. It's a huge pain in the butt. I feel sometimes like I'm swimming upstream. I was diagnosed when I was 24 after major infertility problems. And, unfortunately, my thyroid loves to go on the fritz. I've been on Synthroid for 9 years. My energy at this point is zippo. Gotta love that when you have 3 kids, a husband, and a full time job.

I have to say, it was pretty neat to come to this site and see a section specifically for thyroid conditions. Now I don't feel so alone in this.

Synthroid didn't work for me, but armour thyroid did. I'm on a very low dose, but when I miss a dose I feel it. Ask your doc. to try the armour. It might be the answer. Also, Sparx formula by krysalis.net is good for energy. The only problem is that it tastes bad.

just remember when you do Atkins some of the veggies are goitrogens and you will need to be consistant in your eating of them while your meds are being titrated so your level will be correct for you.

        Happy low carbing.

          Hello all,

I am new to the board and found you guys. I have hypothyroid. It started about 5 years ago after my daughter was born, it went away after about 2 years. I didn't know that was possible. Found out when my last daughter was born last March that I had it again. I guess there is a pregnancy induced thyroid problem. Lucky me! I saw a specialist and he said that I will be on meds for the rest my life because the thyroid is enlarged. We will see. Sooooo, happy day to all.

            welcome to ADBB

thyroid hormone is bound up in the blood stream by changes induced in blood proteins caused by estrogen so when estrogen is high less thyroid hormone is availible to the cells and when it goes down more is avail. many folk who are hypo as young female adults become normal at menopause too.

I haven't checked in for a while, my synthoid has been adjusted twice now in the past three months. My TSH is finally at 1.25 from 3.58. I had an ultrasound of my thyroid and the Hashimotos has taken over the whole thing. There is no healthy tissue left. I go back to my endocrinologist tomorrow. I will let you know what happens. Oh, My parathyroid is fine, but my aunt and my mother both have hyperparathyroids. Take care Dawn

I found out yesterday that I have it. :'( It explains a lot, because it took me nearly three months to lose 25 lbs on strict atkins and exercise 6 times a week, and I have a significant amount to lose.I am taking generic Synthroid...50mg. I hope it helps.

                  Hi Carrianne,

Sorry to hear you have hypothyroidism. There are quite a few of us on the board. I expect the synthyroid will make a difference to weight loss, and how you feel generally.

If you want some info on the condition, let me know (here or pm) as I have some good sites and book recommendations.

I wad diagnosed with hypothyroidism around 5 years ago. I went on Synthroid and after some adjustments my levels evened out and I was taking about 88 mcg. A couple of years ago I switched to the generic. My weight has been going up and up no matter how careful I am and so my doctor retested my thyroid. He has been trying to raise the levels again unsuccessfully. I am now up to 112 mcg and will be retested in a couple of months.

I have been wondering lately if my problem is related to switching to the generic form of Synthroid. If the 112 mcg doesn't work this time I am going to bring that up to my doctor. Anyone else having a problem with the generic or a problem since switching to the generic and not sure why?

                      Hi Terri,

Sorry to hear about your problem - it sounds very frustrating. I haven't experinced that myself as we don't have the synthyroid/generic difference. We have levo-thyroxine.

I have heard people say they have had problems like yours however. It is worth at look at the threads in the thyroid forum to see if any are relevant. Here is a discussion of Armour vs Synthyroid - not sure if that will help http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ad.php?t=27067

Thanks Alexa. I looked at the thread, but I don't see anything that is relevant. I forgot to mention that I did have an ultrasound done of my thyroid, but they say everything looks normal. No growths or polyps found. That is good news, however, it is frustrating to not be able to find a solution.

For all I know it could have something to do with the interaction between all the meds I take. I take a lot of meds daily. I also have diabetes. I noticed a forum for that discussion as well. Perhaps I will try to read through it if I find some time.

Yep, worth asking a specific new thread question in the thyroid problem too.

Have you spoken to the Dr about it?

The dr checks my medications for interactions before he prescribes them, but that doesn't mean something couldn't have been missed. I guess we have to wait and see what the next test shows. Since he just increased my dosage again we have to wait a couple of months to recheck.

Perhaps I will post a question in another thread. I never really thought about it. Thanks!

I have hypothyroidism (as well as PCOS). I hope Synthroid won't interfere with Atkins!

                                Hello,
I was diagnosed with Hypo thyroidism when I was 32. Nearly 15 years ago. I'm treated with Synthroid. So far my doctor has been able to adjust my meds to my thyroid levels. The weight continues to fall off.
