Me! Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Diagnosed about 2 years ago, and had it for about 7 years or so, before it was discovered. My TSH was fairly high and I had a 3 cm goiter. Suppressive doses of thyroid hormone (synthroid and cytomel) reduced the size of the goiter significantly. My story is at http://low-carb.us/hypothyroid.html

I was diagnosed with Grave's disease in early 1983 (this is overactive thyroid condition, I could eat constantly and still lose weight, but I felt miserable, was always too warm and had tremors). So, after several years of trying to correct it with meds, my thyroid was irradiated and about 3 years later my thyroid levels dropped low and I went into deep depression before finding out that was the problem. I've been on synthroid for the past 12 1/2 years.

To find out if you have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, request a thyroid antibody test. Very simple. Also check for a goiter, by doing the drink test. Hold your neck up and tilted back a bit while drinking and get someone to observe - the butterfly-shaped organ (thyroid) below the Adam's apple will have a noticeable lump on one side, if there is a goiter present.
Including T3 thyroid hormone for most people makes sense as many people with hypothyroidism do not make enough T3, which is the component that is also responsible for a good metabolism and a normal body temperature.

I am hypo and I was diagnosed with it 4 years ago after my first was born. I was on the verge for years and finally went low so they would fix it. I am on Synthyroid and Cytomel and the combonation is really great and makes me feel well as well. I have done a lot of research and many do not do well on the Synthyroid alone(T4) and do better with a combonation. A lot who have Hyothyroidism have a problem converting T4 inactive form of thyroid to Active T3 form of thyroid and that is why many fee lousy on just the Synthyroid alone. If you feel like your symptoms have not quite improved then you should try the Cytomel or thee natural for of dessicatef thyroid. It is harder to regulate with the dessicted thyroid so I was switched to the combonation of Cytomel and Synthyroid to help me to keep comtrol better.

It is much harder to lose weight. Important to look at things that can potentially slow the metabolsim or cause stalls. I have found that intense exercise is the key. Especially if you can do hard cardio in early am(an repeat some late in the day if time allows.
I'm hypo. I just know my doctor said I was hypo. If it was Hashimotos would he have specified that to me?
Anyways, I was diagnosed almost 3 years ago. But my new doctor suspected I had been hypo for quite awhile before that. He said my last doctor wasn't running all of the tests he should have been. I've been on Synthroid ever since.
My mother is also hypo (on Atkins too), & has been for almost 10 years. My doctor said if it runs in your family, you have a higher rate of getting it as well. Which I did. Thanks mom! haha
