I'm not sure. I just know I go and get my levels tested once a year now. And I dont know what tests they're actually running. I guess I should. I've been pretty stupid about that I guess...

yep if your doc ran all the tests to determine what kind you had before they treated you then they would know and tell you. Those with hasimoto's have a higher rate of developing diabetes too later on.
If your thyroid medication is in the correct level for you you will not have any more trouble with weight loss then any other Atkineer. the problem is the fods and the actual weight loss can mess with your level and as we all know when out thyroid hormoneis low everything slows down from metabolism to thinking. So iff you haven't had your meds rechecked you might want to do that sometime in the early dayd of your atkins if the scales aren't moving.
The endocrine society lowered the threshold level for hypo in 2002 to THS of 3.0 so many borderline folk are now actual cases and don't get treated.
Diagnosed over 10 years ago, maybe have had it longer, who knows.
I have been taking Synthroid (or generic brand) for 10+ years.
I gained alot of weight when I stopped taking it due to lack of health insurance/no job. Gained alot of weight during this time too, most of which I have now lost on Atkins.
I also have fibromyalgia.
My body temperature is lower than most (usually around 97.0, but sometimes lower). Thus when I have a fever, it's alot worse than the thermometer typically shows for "normal" people.

I'm new to adkins and new to the thyroid test. I finally got my dr to get off her ----- and run the needed test now she is sending me to a specialist to have further test ran. I am positive I have thyroid problems, it runs in my family and what little I know I have every symptom. not to mention I have tried every weight/ diet program out there and failed. except the adkins, I have made some improvements. But it was the adkins dite that has really made me realize I have a thyroid condition. Can anyone fill me in on what to exspect next, as far as test /medications. How does this diet work with a thyroid problem and taking meds? doesnt that slow the weight loss? does it change what you can eat ? Can anyone give me advise. :help
gimullins welcome no taking the thyroid medication will help your weight loss on any program. what they are saying is your body for some unknown reason right now is sending a signal to your thyroid that you don't have enough active theyroid hormones out there and your body either isn't able to make it, convert it to the active form or has a proble with the shut off system. the additional tests will reveal which it is and the proper treatment for you.
If you are primary hypo thyroid they will prescribe some synthetic hormones T$ and see how you react thsi is called titrating your dose. they woll retest you in about 4-6 weeks and see if they need to raise lower or leave the level alone. you will not feel nor see a change right away as ittakes time for every cell to get its proper amount so it can produce the proper amount of chemicals it was supposed to produce so other cells can do their jobs and so on dowm the line.
Eat your atkins just like you would if you were normal and the doc will fix your level to your life style.
I have hypothyroid as well- im not sure what kind thouhg- the doc ran a test and it showed hypo and they gave me synthroid but thats all i know abou it- i never even knew that there was different kinds... what all kinda are there and what is the difference?
ORIGINALLY STARTED: 9/1/04 AT 272 AND BY 7/1/05 WAS AT 181
I have been recently diagnosed, Im not sure what all of this means, but i am on a fairly low dose of Synthroid, hoping something will help. This sleepiness if for the birds.
I'm a Hashi's too. Only been diagnosed for 6 years but doc believes my thyroid when to **** back when I was 18. Broke my neck in high school and had X-ray after X-ray of my neck in the thyroid area. I'm on Armour was on Synthroid for about 2 years, did nothing for me. Armour has helped tremendously. One of the best things I did was find a good endocrinolgist. Found mine off the About.com thyroid pages. They have a link for "Top Docs" that people with hypo recommend.

I would highly recommend the Top Docs page. That's where I finally found my specialist - someone who would listen and help me get my life back.
One of the great struggles with thyroid problems is finding the right doctor. Many people go for years knowing that "something isn't right" yet the conventional tests and lab ranges fail to pick anything up and you are told everything is "normal". The next step is usually anti-depressants as the doctors think you are just depressed. My GP very kindly offered to refer me to a psychiatrist at one stage! :anger
If you're not happy with your doctor, go check it out.

I am new here and lurk around a lot. When I was younger (about 12) my doctors put me on Synthroid (.25 mg I think). After I had my first child my levels were normal. That was 10 years ago. What are the symptoms of hypothyroidism? I find my body temp. is 97ish and like it has been said by someone else here when I get a fever it just looks like a low grade to someone else but to me it's high. If someone could please let me know what the symptoms are that would be great. I am so glad to find this place.
I was diagnosed by a naturopath with Wilson's Thyroid Syndrome based on symptoms and a saliva test, and I had WTS treatment under his care. I'm off all medications and slowly losing weight now. But I have to walk my behind off five days a week and carefully watch every atom that goes into my mouth.
I'd like to go on a small dose of T3 for life because some of the problems that disappeared during the treatment have returned. I am one of the very few people who can't take T4, not Synthroid, not Armour Thyroid (a mixture of T3 and T4) without my blood pressure skyrocketing (200/100 -- up from 120/60).
And finding the right doctor is definitely crucial. Trying to find one when I first moved here, I told the first one I tried about the high blood pressure, and he pitched a fit and said that Synthroid couldn't have caused it, even though it's one of the side effects listed on the Synthroid fact sheet from the pharmacy. I mean, the guy went nuts. I obviously never went back to him again.
Anyone with thyroid problems may learn a bit about the condition by visiting the Wilson's web site and getting on their mailing list. Just a suggestion.
I just wanted to say Hello :wave to all of you dealing with the same issues I have faced. I am hypothyroid and have been since I was 18 (I'm now 24). I started out hyperthyroid when I was 17 and was taking 7 or so pills a day. What a way to start college. So I had an iodine treatment and it shot me allllllllll the way over to this underactive thyroid. So here I am, have been on every dosage of Synthroid imaginable and get my thyroid checked every 6 months. I have an appointment next month so we'll see what happens to my dosage then.
Good Luck with your weight loss everyone. I've definitely had success. I started in October 2003 at 270 pounds. I am now 214 working my way down to 170 (give or take a few pounds).
