I just joined but have been reading posts on the Atkins induction forum for a long time. I never scrolled down to see this one!

I've been hypo for about 10 years. I was on synthroid for years but my Dr. switched me to Armour after I quit smoking. We're having a hard time getting it just right. Before my TSH was a little high at 150mg (120, and a 30mg pill). I was retested 3 months later and this time my T-4 was low at 135mg (120, and half the 30). He bumped me back up to 150 a couple weeks ago so we'll see how that goes. Last time I was on 150 I actually got a zippy little feeling before he backed me down lol.

One thing I've noticed, is I much prefer armour. My concentration is better than when I was on synthroid. I hope we get things figured out with this. I'd hate to go back.

welcome weight loss and the goitrogen foods on the Atkins aceptable lists can effect your prodution of thyroid hormones. SInce your doc is monitoringyou closely you should be okay just make sure you are consistent in how much of them you eat and don't go cabbage wild one week and none the next andy your meds should stay level if the medical condition causing your hypo stays constant.

I also am hypo as well. I found out 5 years ago. I take levoxyl, I didnt see anyone else posting that they took this. I just had to go to the .175 dosage as it keeps going up. Very frustrating. At least now that I am on Atkins I feel so much better!

Good to know I'm not the only one on it. I have also heard from hairdressers that if you have a thyroid problem your hair wont take a perm well, I know that my hair is extremely hard to perm. Just a strange thing to be effected.

I, too, am hypo. I don't know if it is Hasimoto's, I've never heard of that before. I've been diagnosed for about 6 years now and taking synthroid at 0.125 daily. I suspected there was something wrong with me about a year before my son was born but the effects were mild. then when I was pregnant things went wild and all bad -i even lost a whole bunch of my hair which thankfuly has grown back! Ii was sleeping all the time and had no energy, then my system went toxic, forcing an early c-section of my son. he was 6 weeks early and 3.5 pounds when born and both he an i had a lot of swelling at that time. i had gained 30 pounds in a week due to the swelling (hence going into emergency to find out i had gone toxic). My weight since highschool had been stable at 240 pounds on my 5'9.5" frame, but I went up and down between that and 270 since then. My asthma went wild after my son was born , and i have since developoed severs sleep apnea as well. thankfully all these things now seem to be well in hand with being on synthroid and a CPAP machine for breathing while i am trying to sleep, and having the right inhalers in case i have an ashma episode. I hope that all 3 conditions will further improve once i've been on Atkins for a number of months!

                    me too!

im hypo and am taking levothyoxine..

i have a q..it says to take WITHOUT food..
i have a hard time taking pills and usually take a small bite out of something and swallow the pill with that.

do you think that is hampering the pills effects? please help.

                    thanks!

the food could be interferring but it really doesn't matter as long as you take your pills in the same way each time so figure out what little bit of food you want to always use and use it then swallow your water and since you can't eat for an hour now would be a good time to do your exercise. Your dotor bases your dose on your blood TSH level so as long as you use the same interring item each time your level will be the same each time they test and each day of your life. You maybe paying for more med then you should be your level inside your system is what matters.

                          hypo roll call

I've been hypothyroid and taking Synthroid since a year ago. Before that I was hyperthroid and had radioactive iodine treatement (RAI), which sent me over into hypo land. Being hyper didn't seem to cause weight loss (darn it!) but being hypo seems to slow it down.

I've been reading all the posts here with interest. I'm curious, once a person becomes hypo, does the thyroid gland ever go back to functioning normal again?
