Re: Nutrient of the week: Omega 3-6-9!

i am sitting here looking at the bottle label
    it lists
    Fish Oil 1000 mg
    EPA 180 mg
    DHA 120 mg
    Other Fatty Acids 40 mg
and right under that is the listing:
    Omega-3 340 mg

so, yeah, the numbers add up to the 340 listed for the Omega 3 number. so i am guessing out of this conversation that i would still need to take 3 softgels to get in the recommended 1000 mg dosage.

      Yes, I'm afraid so.

I just got off the phone with my DH, and with his fish oil softgels, they list fish oil concentrate at 2.0 g, Omega 3 at 600 mg, EPA at 360 mg, and DHA at 240 mg. As you can see, the last two add up to 600 mg. He only gets these numbers if he takes 2 softgels and the bottle recommends taking it 2-3 times a day. He just takes them in the morning & night, so 4 gels/day. He also uses flaxoil everyday in his salad & sprinkles the seeds on top. Either way, he gets a lot of Omega 3s!

i have the vpp syndrome setting in. lol

i am thinking i should be eating a can of tuna every couple of days. that would certainly help. i don't know why i don't eat it more. i like it. just don't think about it.

well, this has certainly been educational. i'm really looking forward to monday.

Tuna is good for you, but not certain how much Omega 3s the canned variety has though. I'm glad you've enjoyed my first nutrient post. Hopefully, next week will be even better.

Now I'm wondering how much omega 3 is in a couple of tablespoons of flaxseed. I take four softgels a day (will have to check how much in each, but that's the recommended dosage), plus eating flax crackers most lunchtimes. Hope that isn't too much. Often eat tuna too....

I read recently that Omega 3 can help diminish the symptoms of ADHD dramatically. Anyone know if there's any truth to this? Tks.

I hadn't heard about that, Sal. I can do a journal seach at the university to see what's been published. Very interesting if it's true! I'll report back later with news.

That would be terrific Bio! (I have an ADHD son). I was surfing, looking at other stuff and saw some mention of this. Meant to finish up and then go back and check it out, but when I tried, i couldn't find where I originally saw it. Grrrrr. I'm also going to do a search on this as soon as I have a mo'.

Re: Nutrient of the week: Omega 3-6-9!

Sal, with my first search, it seems like there's a link between how individuals with ADHD, especially boys, metabolize long-chain fatty acids (which includes omega oils). I will continue my search and see if I can find something more recent.

Do you have access to a university library? A large one will have these journals on hand or have on-line access to them.

"Essential fatty acid metabolism in boys with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder." Stevens, Laura J, Zentall, Syndey S, Deck, John L, et. al. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Bethesda: Oct 1995, Vol 62, Iss 4, pg 761.

"Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in children with ADHD." Burgess, John R, Stevens, Laura, et. al. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Bethesda: Jan 2000. Vol 71, Iss. 1S; p. S327.

Just googling, I found this article from the BBC. http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbo...ga_three.shtml

It would have been nice if they had listed the journal that the study was published in.

Thanks so much Bio; so kind of you! Those two articles were really interesting. Unfortunately I haven't access to any university library... but reading those two articles will give me the push to search around some more.
Might start giving my son Omega 3 supplements... which should be good for him, quite apart from ADHD. Can't do any harm, and worth a try.
                        Thanks again!

You may take two and then up to three a day for good health. Congrats on starting to take them! They are so good for you!!!!
