Yup they are..now that we're completely o/t LOL.

Do you not have restrictions when you leave the us on what you can bring back? if we stay over 24 hours we're allowed $50 in merchandise (ha!) and no liquor or cigarattes, 48 hours we're allowed $750, which i can spend no problem, 40 ozs of liquor and 200 cigs. If they go through our luggage and we're caught lying, it goes on your customs record for 7 years, which basically guarntees your car will be searched every time you cross.

we're quite inventive in how we can hide stuff on a day trip! wearing old clothes and changing in a bathroom and throwing them away etc.

No Liquor, or only 40oz? What is the point of the duty free shop then?

When I cross back into the US, they ask pretty much the same questions. They ask us to roll down the back window and take off our hats if we have any. Once they asked me to pop the trunk. Basic stuff.

Yup, 1.14 litres or 40ozs. i was way off on the 750.00 for 48 hours..good thing i didn't claim that last time i was over for weekend, you have to stay 7 days for that! i just found this:

After 24 hours absence

Goods valued at $50. No alcohol or tobacco
If over $50 pay duty on entire purchase
Less than 24 hours absence, no duty free allowance

After 48 hours absence
Goods valued at $200 (Canadian funds)
Alcohol: (1.14L) liquor, (1.5L) wine, or 24 cans beer (12 oz.)
Tobacco: 200 cigarettes or50 cigars or 200 gms. tobacco or200 tobacco sticks

After 7 night absence
Goods valued at $750 (Canadian funds)
Including liquor and tobacco limits above

I think personally our border should be more like yours, we should be more concerened with WHO is coming over the border, not how much liquor they're carrying. I have crossed twice by just telling them i'm a canadian citizen and not asked to see my id, they just took my word for it. but spent more time asking me what i bought.

Wow. I am just amazed by that. It pretty much puts very little purpose to the duty free shop.
