  • Ladies - Menopause question

I was just reading another forum, and someone posted that they had been in menopause, without a period, for "several years" and now, because of this WOE, had gotten her period back?!? Has this happened to anyone else?

    Thanks in advance,
    Joan J

I went back to re-check and make sure I'd read it right. Sure enough, she says she'd been menopausal for "several" years and now is having periods again. Geeze.... please say it's not so!!! LOL

The post is in: Atkins For Women -> Well.. it's happened to me too!

      Sigh sigh sigh...

Oh Joan! That would be an unpleasant surprise. My last period was about 7 years ago and I sure like it that way. Not everything about aging is bad. Has this happened more than 1 month to you? Maybe it's a fluke. :hug

          Re: Menopause

Oh my gosh I hope not! One of the best things about turning 50 was the end of the monthly mess and inconvenience. Heavens forbid that this should resume.

well let me tell you my story :sadblinky

Prior to starting Atkins it had been 8 months & then very little (to tiny flow) & sporadic, no big deal. Started Atkins Nov '03. Five days in induction good ole TOM came w/ vengeance. OK can handle this, read on board this can happen. No more TOM until...........
End of March went on honeymoon, second day guess what........ :yikes. We laughed about it & said well we'll just have to go on another honeymoon until we get it right. :hug

This past Sunday, TOM is back again! :anger Yesterday felt like a teenager in pain & agony (let alone the messy part). :guns Can't tell you how long its been since it was this bad. Doing better today.......but geez, going to be 50 in a couple weeks, & have been consoling myself that there are advantages to being "half a century".

            Well wined enough.........

oh yeah, guess I should add, when we came back from honeymoon (gained 5 lbs) went back on strict induction. Good news lost 7lbs of the 5, but still HATE TOM!!

No, no! It's not ME! It was someone else's post in another forum. Scared the poop outta me, though! LOL! I've never heard of such a thing! Just wanted to find out if it had happened to anyone else -- and do I have to start carrying around necessary preparations just in case?!?

And does this mean we can all suddenly GET PREGNANT!!?? Holy :censor , I'm having a hot flash now, just thinking about all this.

Hey as long as the equipment(uterus, ovaries) is still in there, I would take birth control. Especially if TOM is back!
Years ago lots of women had babies at menopause age. Both of my grandmothers had babies at close to age 50.

Thank goodness for hysterectomy! Not recommending it unless you need it, but I was 42 when I had a complete hysterectomy. Thank goodness for HRT. Now there is a completely different problem. Should I take HRT or not. ME!!! I do! But I sure have slow weight loss because of HRT and whatever else, like yeast overgrowth, age, over 50, not sure of everything.

Hang in there everyone. We are going to win this battle. It just takes time!!!

Hi, I'm new to this board. I've spent a few hours yesterday & today browsing through the postings. I agree with Becky. I had a hysterectomy about 6 yrs ago (at age 57). Fibroid tumors were my problem. They can cause extra long periods and more bleeding than usual. Perhaps this is what was happening.

I was on HRT for 5 years and found weight gain VERY easy and weight loss EXTREMELY slow. I've been off estrogen since last October. Last year I had a 40 lb weight gain. Now I'm ready to see if being off estrogen will help me shed some of these lbs.

sisterwind, I'm so sorry about your honeymoon. What a bummer!!!

This is an interesting discussion. My experience is that I haven't had TOM for probably 5/6 years. I have not had a hysterectomy but when I was around 48-49 years old my periods were very sporadic for several months and I had started having hot flashes and a few mild night sweats. When I complained about this my gyn put me on HRT's -- prempro to be exact and within 6 months there was no more TOM or hot flashes. It was wonderful. I stayed on HRT's for several years but came off of them a year or more ago when the cancer scare came out. I held my breath that the symptoms would return but they didn't.

Well, I started Atkins in April '03 and within a month the hot flashes and night sweats were back. I think this WOE has an impact on our estrogen levels somehow. This would be good to research and even ask the Atkins Center about. At least I have not had a TOM so that part is hopefully over. I still get cold and hot off and on during the day. I am dealing with it but sometimes it's a little irritating.

Whew ------ I hope this doesn't last long for you. I was going to tell you that I hoped it was something that would eventually "fade away". But you said it's back worse than ever. I want to console you but I don't know what to say. I do feel your "pain" and frustration. You're right, 50 is supposed to be the time we are free of all that junk and have at least something to look forward to in turning 50. LOL

You hang in there!!! Don't give up ---- that's easy for me to say. LOL Just know all "us" ladies are thinking about you and empathize with you.

                      :hug Janice

In the past few weeks I've noticed exactly the same thing. I haven't had a period in 3-4 years, and counted myself extremely lucky that I had very very few menopause symptoms. But now, holy cow - I have hot flashes to the point that my face gets BEET red and I get very uncomfortable. Also suffering from night sweats and driving DH crazy because I pile all the blankets and sheets on him during the night.

I agree - would love to see some research done on this! My doctor originally told me to eat extra foods with soy as well as sweet potatoes - but that's out now. Black cohash is also supposed to do wonders for menopausal symptoms and I may try that.

Joan, I agree. I think I need to find whatever supplements are supposed to be good for this and give them a try.

Have you tried the Black cohash or know anyone who has?? Just wondered!

This is a good topic to discuss on this forum. We need answers here. I'm going to do some research today and I'll get back here with what I find out.

Everyone hang in there!!! At least we're all in this together. LOL

                            Hi Janice,

I just checked out www.puritan.com to see what they had listed for menopause symptom relief, and sonofagun, it was Black Cohash! In fact, they have 50% off, PLUS buy 2 get 1 free - so one bottle of 100 caps is $5.47, 2 - $10.95, plus 1 free so that's...about 3.75 per 100 capsules. That's not bad. Said to relieve night sweats and hot flashes. They have another product that combines soy and black cohash, but they don't give enough details to really know what's in it. I think I'll do some more detailed research on the 'net and see what I can come up with.

My family doctor (very pro-atkins) is Phillipino and practices "complementary" medicine - east meets west medicine. She is wonderful about suggesting herbs and supplements in place of pricey prescriptions. I will try and give her a call this week and see if she can suggest something.

If you find out any info, please let us know!

                              HRT Cake for Menopause

I too was on HRT for 18 months and came off cos of the scares, boy did I feel bad for a month or so, I found a recipe for HRT cake in the femail web site, made it ...mmmmmmmmm so delicious and hey presto it works 5 months on still eating it no mood swings barely any hot flushes feel good, I also take quite a few alternative remedies i.e. cod liver oil, evening primrose oil, calcium, soy lecithin, vit. c, and a good multi vitamin, it seems to work for me I feel really good, TOM stopped 4 months ago, just thought I would share my experiences with you
